Summary

Overview

Biofrid is a small German health and personal-care company based in Hoya, Lower Saxony. Its range spans plant-based skin creams, essential oils, dietary supplements and mouth rinses, all presented under the company line "Pflegen. Wohlfühlen. Entspannen." (Care. Wellness. Relaxation.). The business has been owned by the Kehlbeck family since 1976, when Heinrich Kehlbeck bought it from a pharmacist in the town of Gifhorn [2].

The brand is notable less for any single product than for the way it frames cosmetics: skin care is treated as one strand of general health, sitting next to supplements and aromatherapy oils rather than in a separate beauty category. It remains active and family-run, selling mainly through its own online shop and through online pharmacies.

Origin & founders

Biofrid is older than its current ownership, but when the company was first established, and by whom, is not publicly documented. What is known is that it existed as a company belonging to the pharmacist Fritz Didier jun. in Gifhorn before it changed hands in the mid-1970s [2].

Its present-day story begins with a different firm. In 1973 the Kehlbeck family founded a small company called SANUM-Kehlbeck in Hoya to produce Enderlein preparations and its own SANUM remedies [2]. The company's own history describes this as the family's first focus, with Biofrid following a few years later. According to that account, Heinrich Kehlbeck had come to see skin care as "a key aspect, where general health is concerned", and went looking for a cosmetics business to match that idea [3].

He found it in 1976, buying Biofrid from Didier [2]. Rather than starting from scratch, the new owner continued to develop the cosmetic formulations the company already had, according to Biofrid. That inherited base became the starting point for the range that carries the name today.

Ownership

Biofrid has stayed in the hands of the Kehlbeck circle since the 1976 purchase. The operating company is Biofrid-Cosmetic GmbH & Co. KG, registered at the district court of Walsrode, with Biofrid-Cosmetic GmbH as its general partner [6]. Its registered purpose covers the manufacture and distribution of dietary, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. The company is managed by Nadine Grummt, Natascha Hoffmann and Martin Stannat.

No separate parent company is named publicly. Instead, Biofrid describes itself as part of a group of affiliated firms, a "Firmenverbund", and links to the sister businesses at sanum.com, mastavit.de and hakakehl.de [1]. The family still treats the name of its first company as a guiding principle: SANUM comes from the Latin for "to be healthy", and the company calls it its "oberstes Credo", its highest creed.

Philosophy & positioning

Biofrid frames its whole business around health rather than appearance. The company says its aim is to support human health naturally, and it describes its catalogue as "our contribution to the natural support of your health". Skin care, supplements and essential oils are presented as three routes to the same goal.

This positioning shows in how the cosmetics are named and described. The brand invites customers to "discover the effect of traditional medicinal plants", and several creams are named after a single plant ingredient. The essential oils, which the company says come predominantly from controlled organic cultivation [2], are presented as products with long-attributed healing and calming effects. Biofrid also advises that essential oils should not be applied undiluted to the skin.

The company addresses health practitioners as well as private customers. It offers a test box containing a selection of its products for use in day-to-day practice [5].

No third-party certifications, such as natural-cosmetics seals, are documented for the range.

Products & innovation

The cosmetics fall into two groups. The first is a small line of creams built around germanium: a face cream, a skin cream and a body lotion, the face cream and body lotion both sold in airless dispensers. The second is a natural-cosmetics line of five plant creams, each named after its main botanical: arnica, calendula, witch hazel (Hamamelis), evening primrose and propolis. Independent retail listings show the plant creams in 75 ml sizes alongside the germanium products [12].

Outside skin care, the essential-oil range is extensive. It includes single oils from organic and conventional cultivation, ready-made blends and roll-on applicators. Among the roll-ons are mint, niaouli and tea tree; Biofrid describes the tea tree roll-on as effective help for skin blemishes and insect bites [1], though no supporting study is cited. Seasonal blends address topics such as irritated summer skin, colds and insect bites.

Much of the remaining catalogue is nutritional. It includes evening primrose and black cumin oil capsules, a lactic-acid preparation called RMS Biofrid, an arginine product and a tomato-extract supplement, Thrombosol aktiv. Two mouth rinses, Pleo Chelate and Sanumgerman, complete the line-up [9].

Distribution runs along several channels. Alongside its own shop, Biofrid's creams are listed by online pharmacies under pharmaceutical product numbers, with the company named as manufacturer [11].

Current status

Biofrid is active. As of October 2026 its online shop was live, with cosmetics such as the germanium face cream and body lotion marked as available. Orders from the company's own shop are shipped within Germany only [7], and the brand operates on a single-country basis, although an English-language version of its website exists. No recent product launches or press coverage have been reported.
