Summary

Overview

Blood Concept is an independent Italian niche perfume house founded in Milan in 2010 by Antonio Zuddas and Giovanni Castelli [1]. The brand built its identity around a single conceit: interpreting the four human blood types — O, A, B and AB — as a metaphor for human identity and the stages of human evolution. Each scent was tied to a "type", and the early bottles carried blood in the form of a metallic note running through the composition.

The brand is now dormant. Its products are still distributed through licensing and third-party retailers, but its own domain, bloodconcept.com, is no longer operational, and no editorial coverage has surfaced after 2016 [9].

Thinner sourcing. The article relies largely on the brand's own statements (T2–T3). Glowpedia is seeking independent sources.

Origin and founders

Zuddas and Castelli came to perfumery from adjacent creative fields rather than from the fragrance trade. According to a launch-era interview, Castelli is a fashion designer and a co-founder of the fragrance house Acqua di Stresa, while Zuddas is an artist who worked in advertising as a copywriter and photographer [11]. Both were based in Milan, where the concept took shape.

The collection made its public debut at Esxence 2011, the Milan trade fair for artistic perfumery, with an original set of four fragrances named for the blood types. The reviewer-cited perfume authority Michael Edwards described Blood Concept as "the most interesting thing" he encountered that day [4].

Philosophy and positioning

The house framed scent as a statement of selfhood — its Instagram tagline reads "Fine scents as a declaration of Identity." Editorial reviews recorded how the original line mapped blood types onto stages of human development: Type O evoked primitive hunter-gatherers in animal skins, Type A the shift to agrarian society, Type B the mixing of cultures opened up by travel, and Type AB a forward-looking metropolitan modernity [4]. Across the range, the brand positioned itself as conceptual, genderless and avant-garde, aimed at collectors looking beyond mainstream designer fragrance. One retailer describes the perfumes as "cruelty-free and ethically made," a claim attributed to the seller rather than independently certified.

History and milestones

Following the 2011 launch, the founders extended the original quartet with plasma-themed releases — +MA in summer and RED+MA some months later — both reviewed in 2012 [3]. A darker Black Series, reworking O, A, B and AB, followed in 2014. The niche-perfume blog CaFleureBon covered the line across these years, noting that the Black Series, like its predecessors, mixed "congenial and confrontational" fragrances.

In 2015 the brand was licensed to Intertrade Group, an Italian niche-fragrance distribution house, marking its shift from a founder-run independent to a licensed brand under outside direction [1]. The relaunch brought new packaging — a cube-shaped casket box holding a semi-transparent black glass cylinder with an oversized matt black stopper — and reorganised the line into three colour-coded series: the Red Series, the Black Series and the Upside Down Series. Master perfumers worked under the creative direction of Celso Fadelli, with aesthetic development guided by Agenzia del Contemporaneo and a brand-identity film directed by photographer Paolo Santambrogio [1]. In 2016 the line appeared at Pitti Fragranze through an Intertrade and Avery Perfume Gallery display, which introduced David Bowie-inspired XX and XY fragrances [8].

Products

The size of the catalogue depends on which era and source is counted. The post-2015 distributor describes "ten fragrances organized into three color-coded collections" [1], while the fragrance database Parfumo lists 22 perfumes across the brand's full history, including all variants released since 2011 [9]. Both figures are accurate for what they measure. The original Esxence quartet — A, O, B and AB — anchored the early line, joined by the +MA and RED+MA plasma scents and, after the relaunch, type-designated entries such as the XX and XY pair.

Current status

Blood Concept is classified as dormant rather than defunct. Its perfumes remained available in 2026 through Intertrade's distribution and retailers including Avery Perfume Gallery, but the signals of an active brand have faded: the original bloodconcept.com domain has been lost and is listed for sale, and no editorial coverage appears after the 2016 Pitti Fragranze showing, which is also the date of the newest fragrance recorded by Parfumo [9]. Social accounts under the @bloodconcept handle still exist, though their current upkeep is unclear.
