Overview
Bogue Profumo is an Italian niche fragrance house founded in 2012 by the architect and designer Antonio Gardoni, who composes and produces its perfumes himself in Brescia, in northern Italy [14]. The label works on a deliberately small scale, releasing handmade perfumes in limited runs, and is associated with dense, animalic compositions in the chypre tradition. Its best-known scent, MAAI, drew critical attention shortly after its 2014 release and remains the house's calling card.
The brand is unambiguously active. Its most recent fragrance, COME, was released in August 2025 alongside a project titled Gardelia 2025, and it continues to distribute through specialty perfumery retailers across more than twenty countries [5].
One point of record is contested. The brand's own Italian VAT registration, its Brescia base, and several retailer and editorial profiles place the house in Italy [15]; the US retailer LuckyScent, by contrast, lists Gardoni's country as France in its perfumer profile [12]. The packet treats the French listing as a tagging error, since LuckyScent's own text describes Gardoni as Italian, and resolves the country as Italy.
Origin and founder
Antonio Gardoni came to perfumery from architecture and design. Before fragrance, he co-founded the London practice Jump Studios with Ron Arad and worked as a teacher of industrial and interior design [13]. According to retailer profiles drawing on the brand's account, the house began after Gardoni came across a cache of vintage perfumery bases and formulations — through an antiques dealer, in the telling reported by CaFleureBon [13], or in an Italian property basement, as Sainte Cellier describes it [15]. He began reworking these abandoned essences, adding modern materials to build new compositions, and launched Bogue Profumo as a way to share what the brand calls his passion for nature and odours through very small productions of handmade perfume.
Gardoni is the founder, owner and sole perfumer; the packet records no parent company and no outside ownership.
Philosophy and method
The house frames its work in architectural terms. "I create contemporary fragrances with ancient techniques and modern intuitions," Gardoni says, and describes his perfumes as "rooms to discover with their mood, texture, light and color." That spatial idea carries into the making: drawing on his design background, he builds scents in layers and by subtraction, treating each one as a space with its own character.
The production methods are unusual and largely hand-worked. Gardoni prepares his own solvents through alcohol infusions of resins, woods, roots and even metals, extracts essential oils by steam distillation, and, by the brand's account, works at night so that daylight does not interfere with the chemistry. CaFleureBon describes a further technique it calls "tree deconstruction" — rebuilding an aroma by blending measured percentages of distilled roots, branches, leaves, berries and bark [13]. Alongside the main line, the house offers a bespoke service, Bogue TAILOR, in which a custom perfume is developed for an individual client using natural raw materials and in-house infusions.
Products
Bogue Profumo's core line — what the house calls its "odors" — centres on a small set of perfumes: MAAI, an extrait de parfum born in June 2014 [6]; O/E, launched in 2015 and conceived around paradoxes of natural and synthetic; MEM, from May 2017; and COME, from August 2025 [5]. A separate work, AG, is described by the house as a self-referential composition built on the notes and inspirations that underlie Gardoni's perfumery, issued as a limited edition with a hand-sculpted ceramic cap and a gold-embroidered silk handkerchief. The fragrances lean on materials such as civet, castoreum, oakmoss, amber, indoles, tuberose and jasmine — the animalic and chypre register the house is known for.
Recognition
MAAI is the house's critical anchor. It featured among CaFleureBon's best discoveries of 2014, where the reviewer described its chypre as "devastating" and its floral intensity as "bestial" [13]. In Perfumes, The Guide 2018, Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez gave MAAI a four-star rating, with Turin calling it "a big-boned, animalic woody chypre" and writing that "I cannot overstate the joy that smelling something like this provides" [17]. The same perfume was later chosen as the scent diffused during a "Scent of Mystery" screening held as a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor, a placement the brand says Turin himself suggested [19]. Bogue Profumo marked its tenth anniversary in 2022 with a fragrance titled 10edt, and released 20edp for the twentieth anniversary of its US retailer, LuckyScent [14].
Current status
The house remains active and operates as a small, independent producer. Its latest releases include COME and Gardelia, both dated 2025, and its perfumes are sold direct and through niche perfumery retailers in Europe, the United States, Asia and the Middle East; the brand site carries a 2026 copyright.
