Summary

Overview

Borotalco is an Italian personal-care brand built around talc-based powders and, since the 1990s, deodorants and body products. It traces back to the Florence pharmacy of English chemist Henry Roberts, who created a borated-talc powder there in 1878 [4]; the branded Borotalco talcum powder, sold in its green tin, followed in 1904 [2]. The name combines boro (boric acid) with talco (talc).

The brand has been owned by the Italian multinational Bolton Group since 1992, when Bolton acquired its parent company, Manetti & Roberts. It remains in active production, with current deodorant, body and talc lines and a 120th-anniversary milestone marked in 2024.

Origin and founders

Henry Roberts (1819–1879), an English chemist, ran a pharmacy on Florence's Via Tornabuoni and worked through his firm, H. Roberts & Co. According to the company, it was here in 1878 that "Boro-talcum was born," a fine powder the brand describes as having gone on to "pamper the skin of millions of people of all ages." The product reached Italian homes in its now-familiar green tin in 1904, the date the brand treats as the birth of Borotalco itself.

Two founding dates therefore sit side by side, and they describe different things rather than contradicting each other. The brand site and Italian Wikipedia both record 1878 as the year Roberts invented the borated-talc compound, and 1904 as the launch of the branded green-tin product [2][4]. Borotalco anchors its own anniversaries on 1904 — the 2024 celebration was billed as 120 years — while its heritage storytelling also reaches back to the 1878 invention.

History and milestones

In 1921 the firm merged with the Florentine pharmacy of Lorenzo Manetti, forming Manetti & Roberts, the company that would carry the brand through the twentieth century [4].

The name proved valuable enough to defend. In 1929 the Italian Court of Cassation granted Manetti & Roberts exclusive trademark rights to the term "borotalco" [4]; in the same period the company ran the anti-imitation line "If it's not Roberts, it's not Borotalco" [2]. Borotalco later appeared in RAI's Carosello television advertisements from 1957, a fixture of postwar Italian broadcasting.

Product expansion came later in the century. Editorial coverage dates the arrival of Borotalco-branded deodorants and other personal-care items, including shower gels and body creams, to the 1990s [5], and the brand's own timeline places an Original deodorant line with "Microtalc" around the turn of the millennium. In 2022 Borotalco was entered into Italy's Register of Historical Trademarks of national interest, a designation administered by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy [2].

Ownership

Borotalco's parent, Manetti & Roberts, came under the control of Bolton Group in 1992; after the acquisition the operation expanded beyond powder into soaps and deodorants [4]. Bolton Group, a multinational consumer-goods company, also owns the Italian personal-care brands Neutro Roberts and Collistar. The brand's regional sites are operated locally — its Arabic-English portal, for instance, is run by Bolton Middle East DMCC in Dubai — while the brand remains Italian in origin and ownership.

Philosophy and positioning

Borotalco's current positioning is organised around an "Embrace Life" theme. The company frames the confidence its deodorants provide as what lets people open up to others "the Italian way," with the campaign line "Forget sweating, embrace life." In its own words, "life is richer when we are in touch with others, because the best moments are shared moments" [3]. The messaging leans on authenticity, human connection and shared moments rather than on technical performance claims.

As a category, the brand sits at the drugstore price tier and has historically been associated with family and maternal care — used after bathing, in warmer months and as part of childcare routines [5].

Products and innovation

The signature product remains the talcum powder in its historic green tin, the item that established the name. The contemporary range centres on deodorants — sold in variants such as Original, Invisible and Intensive — alongside body-care products. The brand identifies talc and a proprietary "Microtalc" as core to its deodorant formulation. The talc used in Borotalco products is sourced from the Val Chisone mine near Turin.

Recognition

Borotalco's most distinctive mark of recognition is linguistic: in Italy the brand name became the generic word for talcum powder. As one Italian-American outlet put it, asking for "borotalco" in Italy "means asking for talcum powder" [5]. The brand's 2022 inclusion in Italy's Register of Historical Trademarks of national interest is a further formal recognition of its standing in Italian commercial culture.

Current status

Borotalco is active and remains owned by Bolton Group, which has held it since the 1992 acquisition of Manetti & Roberts [4]. Its most recent visible activity includes the 2022 "Embrace Life" campaign and Historical Trademark registration and a 120th-anniversary milestone in 2024, with deodorant, body and talc lines currently sold across multiple regions.
