Overview
Cerruti is an Italian fashion house, headquartered in Paris, whose name comes from a family of weavers active in Piedmont since the mid-1700s. The company foregrounds 1881 as its origin year, the date Antonio Cerruti opened the Lanificio Cerruti wool mill in Biella [1]. The fashion house itself is younger: his grandson Nino Cerruti launched the Paris label in 1967, and Wikipedia records that year as the brand's founding [5]. Both dates are accurate to different things — the textile mill of 1881 that the name "1881" still refers to, and the ready-to-wear house of 1967.
Within the beauty market, Cerruti is known for fragrance. The label has issued men's and women's scents since the late 1970s, and that perfume line remains its presence on beauty shelves today, sold under licence and supported by a dedicated fragrance website. The wider company also trades in watches, leather goods, bags, writing instruments and other accessories.

Origin and founders
The Cerruti story begins as a textile business. According to the company, the family had been weavers since around 1750, and in 1881 Antonio Cerruti established a wool-production mill in Biella, in the Piedmont region [1]. The operation, known as Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti, supplied fabric rather than finished clothing for its first decades.
The turn toward fashion came with Antonio's grandson, Nino Cerruti, born in Biella in 1930. He inherited the family firm in 1950, at the age of twenty, after his father's death, and began modernising the mills to add garment production. In 1957 he created a menswear line called Hitman, whose first ready-to-wear collection drew attention for its approach to tailoring. Giorgio Armani worked at Hitman as a design assistant between 1964 and 1970, early in his own career [5].
In November 1967, Nino Cerruti opened the maison Cerruti 1881 in Paris, with a first boutique on the Place de la Madeleine [1]. The brand describes his debut collection as a break with the prevailing style, and fashion press of the time framed 1967 as the year "Italian style dethroned English fashion." A womenswear collection followed, and the dedicated "Cerruti Woman" line was introduced in 1976.
History and milestones
Cerruti's first fragrance, Nino Cerruti pour Homme, launched in 1978 and opened a category that the house has maintained ever since [5]. The fashion side, meanwhile, reached beyond the runway: in 1994 Cerruti became the official designer for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team.
The brand also became closely tied to cinema through its founder. Nino Cerruti dressed actors including Michael Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford for films such as Wall Street (1987), Pretty Woman (1990) and Basic Instinct (1992).
In October 2000, Nino Cerruti sold the brand to Italian investors, and he was pushed out of the business the following year, after which he returned his attention to the family textile mill [5]. He died in Vercelli, Italy, on 15 January 2022, aged 91 [6].
Ownership
After Nino Cerruti's exit, the brand changed hands more than once. By 2011 it sat within the Hong Kong-based Trinity Limited group, as stated in a later company announcement [7]. In 2017, the Chinese textile group Shandong Ruyi acquired Trinity, making it the ultimate parent of Cerruti 1881 [5]. The two accounts are consistent: Trinity held the brand directly, and Shandong Ruyi acquired Trinity. Public records describe Shandong Ruyi as one of the largest textile manufacturers in China.
The fragrance business is run separately under licence. In May 2018, the UK-based company Designer Parfums acquired the Cerruti 1881 fragrance licence, adding it to a portfolio that also includes names such as Jean Patou, Aigner and Ghost [7]. Trade press characterised the addition as part of Designer Parfums' prestige fragrance line-up [8].
Philosophy and positioning
Cerruti positions itself around a relaxed Italian elegance. The company emphasises "nonchalance and masculinity," framing its clothing for a clientele engaged in business travel and looking for an easier, less formal sense of style. That outlook traces back to the family's roots in Biella textile craft, and to Nino Cerruti's preference for lighter, less structured tailoring.
The current fragrance line carries a more contemporary message. Marketed under the tagline "Break the Code. Be Alive," it is themed around embracing both the real and the virtual world, which the brand presents as two sides of the same reality rather than opposites.
Products and innovation
For beauty buyers, Cerruti is a fragrance label. Its longstanding pillar is Cerruti 1881 Pour Homme, which the fragrance line describes as an Italian scent built on brightness, freshness and refinement. The range also includes Cerruti 1881 Pour Femme, built around a linen-flower note with soft woody tones, and Cerruti 1881 Silver Night, positioned as a more intense eau de parfum. In 2024, under licensee Designer Parfums, the house introduced the Cerruti 1881 Vivo line, described as its first major fragrance launch in more than three decades, alongside a dedicated fragrance website.
The brand site lists no ingredient details or formulation claims for these scents, which are produced under a designer-fragrance licence rather than by an in-house beauty operation.
Current status
Cerruti is active. The fashion house operates as a subsidiary of Shandong Ruyi, with headquarters in Paris, and its fragrance line continues under Designer Parfums, most recently with the 2024 Vivo launch and a live fragrance site. The death of founder Nino Cerruti in 2022 did not end the business; the brand and its scents remain in distribution.
