Overview
Chamo Bürger is a German single-product skin-care brand: a pure chamomile powder sold under the name Chamo® Bürger Kamillenpuder. It belongs to Johannes Bürger Ysatfabrik GmbH, a family-owned maker of herbal medicines that trades as Ysat Bürger® and is based in Bad Harzburg, a town in Germany's Harz mountains [7]. The powder is the only product the company lists under its "Hautschutz" (skin protection) heading, and it is described as a cosmetic for medical body care and the treatment of the skin [4].
The brand is active. It remains on its owner's product pages and is sold through pharmacies, mainly online pharmacies in German-speaking Europe. Its own launch date and creators have not been made public, so most of its history is the history of the company behind it, a pharmaceutical firm whose roots go back to a pharmacist's work on foxglove in the 1890s.
Origin & founders
Neither the year Chamo Bürger was introduced nor the people who developed it are publicly documented. The only hint at its age comes from an online pharmacy, which describes the powder as having been in use "for decades" [9]. The brand therefore has no founding story of its own, and the founding facts of its parent company should not be read as the launch of the powder.
What can be traced is the plant tradition the product grew out of. Ysat Bürger says it has worked with the plant life of the Harz, a low mountain range in Germany, for more than a century. Alongside red foxglove, the company names autumn crocus, bearberry, sage, shepherd's purse and chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) among the plants it has studied and processed [3]. For a long time these plants were gathered locally and turned into extracts. According to the company, the volumes it now needs are too large for that, and its plant material today comes from wild collection elsewhere in Europe or from contract farming. The company does not say where the chamomile for Chamo Bürger is grown, nor where the powder itself is made.
Ownership
Chamo Bürger is owned by Johannes Bürger Ysatfabrik GmbH, which sells its products under the Ysat Bürger® name. Online pharmacies list the same company as the product's supplier and manufacturer, at an address in Bad Harzburg [10]. No acquisitions or changes of ownership involving the brand are documented, and no separate company exists for it. Its social media presence is that of the parent, whose accounts on Instagram and Facebook cover the whole range.
The parent company's story begins in 1896, when the pharmacist Johannes Bürger started researching red foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), a plant still common in the Harz. The strong effect of its active substance, digitoxin, on the heart muscle was already known, but the gap between a useful dose and a poisonous one was narrow, and even pharmacists often could not tell how much of a given preparation to take. According to the company, Bürger succeeded in isolating digitoxin and standardising it to a precise content. The result was its first product, Digitalysatum, a medicine for heart rhythm disorders and heart failure.
In 1903 Bürger and a fellow pharmacist named Weinhagen set up the "Chemisches Laboratorium Wernigerode am Harz, Bürger und Weinhagen" in the town of Wernigerode. The company treats this laboratory as its own forerunner and counts its history from that year [3]. The trademark "Ysat" was protected in 1914 and worked into both product names and the company name. In 1920 the founder's four sons joined the business, which took the name Johannes Bürger Ysatfabrik GmbH, the name it still uses.
The end of the Second World War split the company. Wernigerode lay in the Soviet occupation zone, and in 1945 an independent branch was founded in Oker, near Goslar [3]. That branch moved in 1951 to its present site in Bad Harzburg. The original Wernigerode plant was nationalised in 1953. The Bad Harzburg company marked its centenary in 2003, the same year it committed to what it calls "integrated medicine" and acquired the gout medicine Colchicum Dispert.
Today Ysat Bürger describes itself as an independent, research-based pharmaceutical manufacturer run in the fourth generation by the founder's great-grandchildren [2]. Its range consists mostly of plant-based medicines, among them Uvalysat for urinary tract inflammation, Salvysat (sage) for heavy sweating, Styptysat for heavy menstrual bleeding, Cimicifuga Ysat for menopause symptoms and Dormoysat sleep drops, as well as food supplements. In 2025 it added Uvalysat Cranberry NEM, a food supplement, and in November of that year the prescription gout medicine Colchicin Bürger. The company also manufactures liquid medicines, homeopathic remedies and food supplements for other firms on contract, says it has done so for more than 50 years, and states that it holds pharmaceutical GMP certification, the quality standard for medicine production [6]. These credentials belong to the company as a whole; none of the company's pages links them specifically to the chamomile powder.
Philosophy & positioning
Chamo Bürger has no published philosophy, mission statement or tagline of its own. It sits inside a company that frames its whole range around "die Heilkraft der Natur", the healing power of nature, and says its aim is to develop well-tolerated preparations that improve people's quality of life in a natural way.
The powder occupies an unusual position between cosmetics and medicine. Its owner classes it as a cosmetic, not a medicinal product, yet presents it for "medical body care" and for the treatment of mild skin inflammation. Ysat Bürger's main page on skin inflammation is built around diaper dermatitis, an irritation of the skin in the nappy area. The company explains that it is common in babies and can also affect older people living with incontinence, and it recommends Chamo Bürger as a gentle treatment for mild cases [5]. An online pharmacy lists the areas of use more broadly: mild inflammation of the skin, sunburn, and inflammation in the anal area [9].
The brand's tone is clinical rather than cosmetic. Its product page describes the powder as a proven remedy for gentle and effective body care, and the supporting material reads like patient information, with sections on causes, symptoms, diagnosis and everyday care. There is no styling, fragrance story or beauty imagery attached to it.
Products & innovation
The brand consists of one product: Chamo® Bürger Kamillenpuder, a pure chamomile powder in a 75 g pack. One online pharmacy also lists a twin pack of two 75 g containers. The official ingredient list names only chamomile flower extract and chamomile oil. The company highlights two substances found in chamomile oil as the active ingredients, chamazulene and bisabolol.
According to Ysat Bürger, these two substances cool the skin and calm inflammation, and they also act against bacteria and fungi [4]. Those are the company's own descriptions of how the product works. No independent tests, reviews or published studies of the powder are documented.
The most detailed claim about the product comes from a pharmacy listing rather than from the brand itself. It states that the powder contains only chamomile of the grade used to make medicines. The listing explains why that matters: several hundred tonnes of chamomile are processed in Germany each year for ointments, extracts, bath additives, oils and teas, but the share of essential oils, the part responsible for the effect, varies between 2 and 4 percent. Medicinal-grade chamomile, the listing says, guarantees a consistently high share of those oils [9].
No third-party certifications, patents, research partnerships or sustainability commitments are documented for the brand. No awards, press coverage or controversies connected with it have been reported either.
Current status
Chamo Bürger is an active brand. As of November 2026 it was still listed on its owner's website, which links to several online pharmacies, and it was in stock at pharmacy retailers in Germany and Austria [10]. There is no dated news or new product specific to the brand. Its continued presence rests on steady availability, while the most recent activity from its owner is the launch of Colchicin Bürger in November 2025.
