Overview
CLEAN, also known as Clean Beauty Collective, is a United States fragrance brand built around a single idea: the fresh, soap-clean scent of skin just out of the shower. The brand traces its US establishment to 2003 in New York, under Fusion Brands, and credits its creation to entrepreneur Randi Shinder [1][6]. One fragrance database notes that Shinder launched an earlier product called Clean around 2002 while based in Ottawa, Canada, before the brand's US founding [6]; the company itself dates the line to 2003 [1].
Where most perfumes of the era leaned heavy and complex, CLEAN offered the opposite. According to the company, it set out to bottle a "universally appreciated fragrance of freshly showered skin," and that simplicity became its signature. The brand is still active, selling directly online and through retailers, with current collections and distribution that reaches Nordic markets.
Origin & founders
The brand grew out of a gap its founder could not fill. Randi Shinder wanted a fragrance that smelled like pure soap — the universal just-washed scent — and, unable to find one, made her own; the result was CLEAN Original [6]. Shinder built the brand inside New York-based Fusion Brands, the company that also held her wider beauty portfolio, which included Lip Fusion and, with Jessica Simpson, Dessert Beauty [6].
History & milestones
CLEAN launched in 2003 and is widely credited with helping define the "clean" fragrance category — scents marketed around freshness rather than heavy composition; one fragrance database describes it as having become "the mascot for the 'clean' fragrance movement" [6]. The same year, Shinder received Women's Wear Daily's "Company Newcomer of the Year" award [6].
In 2016 the brand extended into its CLEAN Reserve line with Warm Cotton, a unisex fragrance the company describes as inspired by freshly laundered cotton sheets, opening with an airy freshness that settles into a soft cotton musk. The brand has since added further Reserve and H2EAU fragrances.
Ownership
CLEAN began under Fusion Brands, with Shinder as its creator. She later sold her majority stake in Fusion Brands, stayed on as chief executive for three years, and in 2009 sold her remaining equity [6]. The brand has continued independently of its founder since then, operating today as Clean Beauty Collective.
Philosophy & positioning
CLEAN's positioning rests on the contrast it drew at launch. In a market it characterises as dominated by overpowering, complex scents, the brand framed shower-fresh simplicity as something deliberately different, summed up in its description of "the scent of just-stepped-out-of-the-shower skin." The company also positions the brand as clean, vegan and eco-conscious, and cites the line as a "global mainstay" with a "$175+ million / yr legacy" [1].
Products & innovation
The flagship is CLEAN Original, the original soap-fresh scent. The brand's later focus is CLEAN Reserve, which the company calls a "sustainable farm-to-fragrance collection" built with the perfumer's reserve of sustainable ingredients and intended to be layered together. Within Reserve, Warm Cotton is the best-known fragrance, alongside Reserve Blend scents such as Skin and the newer H2EAU collection.
On formulation, the company says CLEAN products have "always been 100% vegan and cruelty-free," that it never tests on animals, and that it avoids parabens, phthalates, synthetic colours and other ingredients it lists as potentially harmful. CLEAN Reserve is described by the brand as eco-conscious, recyclable and phthalate-free.
Sustainability
CLEAN Reserve carries most of the brand's sustainability messaging. The company describes a farm-to-fragrance model that sources ingredients responsibly and supports farming communities, and says it has funded safe drinking-water initiatives for a farming community in Haiti. On packaging, the brand states that its large bottles use recyclable glass, its caps use sustainable wood from Spain, and its boxes are FSC-certified with compostable plant-based cellophane.
Recognition
Beyond the 2003 Women's Wear Daily newcomer award, CLEAN Reserve has drawn editorial attention for its packaging. An industry roundup quotes Vogue describing the Reserve scents as "luxurious and unique," with bottles that are "100 percent recyclable, which is very rare for a perfume brand" [8].
Current status
CLEAN remains an active brand. It operates a transactional website under Clean Beauty Collective, maintains current fragrance collections including CLEAN Reserve and H2EAU, and is sold across multiple regions; in Finland, for example, it is distributed by Transmeri. Its founder, Randi Shinder, exited the business in 2009, and the brand has continued independently since.
