Summary

Overview

Cocoon Botanicals is a German natural skincare brand based in Hamburg, founded in 2020 [2]. It makes a small range of facial products built on cold-pressed plant oils, botanical extracts and active ingredients such as niacinamide and bakuchiol, and it formulates without alcohol or added water. The brand is operated by Kreher & Kreher GbR, a partnership based in Hamburg [4].

The company tells its origin as a personal one: co-founder Elisa, a trained cosmetician, says she began developing her own formulas after years of skin trouble. Accounts of who founded the brand differ. The current company website names two founders, while articles published in 2021 described a founding trio. The brand sells mainly through its own German-language online shop and remains active.

Origin & founders

According to the company's own account, the idea goes back to 2014. Elisa writes that after she stopped taking the contraceptive pill that year, she suddenly struggled with skin problems and irritation [2]. Although she was a trained cosmetician and knew what her skin needed, she says she could not find products that met her standards. That gap, in her telling, led her to develop her own skincare combining natural ingredients with active ingredients. She states that she developed every formula herself and that the range took more than three years of development and testing before it was finished.

The brand's website dates the founding of Cocoon Botanicals to 2020 and names Elisa and Julian as its founders [2]. It describes them as a couple who share a passion for skincare made with natural and effective ingredients, and who set out to make products that bring out "the natural beauty of every skin" by combining naturalness with effectiveness.

Earlier coverage tells a slightly different story about the founding team. In a 2021 interview, the Hamburg city magazine Mrs.CITY presented the brand as a new Hamburg natural-cosmetics label run by a founding trio: Katja "Kaddy" Seedorf, Julian Kreher and Elisa Steffan [7]. A German green-beauty blog the same year also described the brand as founded in 2020 by three friends, Elisa, Kaddy and Julian [8]. Both sources agree on the founding year; they differ from today's company website on who the founders were. The website no longer mentions a third founder, and no public explanation of a change in the team has been given.

The 2021 interview gives more detail on the three founders' backgrounds. Elisa and Kaddy had met in Berlin years earlier, when Kaddy was studying chemistry and Elisa was studying German language and literature. Elisa later met Julian, who became her partner. In the interview, Kaddy was described as completing a master's degree in cosmetic chemistry and then gaining her first experience of cosmetic product development at a larger cosmetics company [7]. She said the work taught her a great deal about how formulas are developed, but also showed her many things she would do differently.

Elisa, according to the same interview, had completed training as a cosmetician because skincare had always been her passion. She went on to study German and to work in the media industry, while continuing to train in cosmetics on the side and making her own products. Julian had worked as an industrial designer and gained experience in user-interface design. The founders said he was so taken with the effect of Elisa's first prototypes that he decided to join the project. The idea for a shared company, they recalled, came out of several dinners at which Elisa and Kaddy discussed their futures and found they had the same goal: to start their own natural-cosmetics business.

Ownership

Cocoon Botanicals is an independent brand. The business is run by Kreher & Kreher GbR, a German civil-law partnership with its address in Hamburg [4]. No parent company, outside owner or acquisition is documented, and the brand has no known sister brands.

Philosophy & positioning

Cocoon Botanicals describes itself as natural skincare, or "Naturkosmetik", that unites naturalness with effective active ingredients. On its website the company says it avoids fillers and what it calls "critical" ingredients, with the aim of caring for the skin over the long term and supporting its natural balance. Its tagline, given in both German and English, is "Weniger Produkte. Mehr Balance." ("Fewer products. More balance.") alongside "Less but better", and the homepage promotes minimalist routines for balanced skin.

The brand's formulation rules are set out on its ingredients page. The company lists gently cold-pressed oils, natural ingredients, nutrient-rich plant extracts and what it calls demonstrably effective actives, and it says its products contain no synthetic fragrances or colourants, no alcohol, no silicones, no mineral oil, no synthetic preservatives and no fillers [3]. No clinical studies are cited in support of the effectiveness claim. The homepage adds that all ingredients are of 100 per cent natural origin and that the products contain no added water.

The avoidance of water and alcohol is a recurring theme. In the 2021 interview, the founders explained that natural cosmetics often use ethanol as a preservative, which can dry out the skin, and that they rejected alcohol as a preservative entirely [7]. Instead of plain water, they said, they use plant hydrosols such as rose water, so that every raw material has a specific purpose. They also said their raw materials are not heated to high temperatures, as making a cream would require, which in their view helps preserve the active ingredients and vitamins.

The company also says it personally tests its ingredients for quality and that it develops all of its products itself. Where possible, it uses raw materials from certified organic farming, though it does not claim that the full range is organic. Transparency is one of its stated values: it publishes a list of its main ingredients, each with its INCI name (the standard ingredient name used on cosmetic labels) and the products in which it appears.

Alongside the shop, the brand publishes educational content. A "Deine Haut" ("Your skin") page explains the structure of the skin and how its outer layer renews itself, and the brand's online magazine carries an article on niacinamide.

A 2021 review on a German green-beauty blog described the brand's approach of combining plant extracts, organic oils and active ingredients as a rarity in natural cosmetics [8]. The same review highlighted niacinamide for a strong skin barrier, bakuchiol for stimulating collagen production and panthenol for its anti-inflammatory effect, and noted that the products were packaged in glass.

Products & innovation

The core range consists of five full-size facial products: the Hydration Booster Serum, the Recovery Treatment Oil, the Active Botanical Toner, the Balancing Night Oil and the Pure Softening Oil Cleanser. They are also sold in 3 ml sample sizes, in duos and in bundled routines such as the Essential Pflegeroutine and the All-in-All Pflegeroutine. A small accessories line includes an Obsidian Gua Sha facial massage stone and a Teddy Bag, and the gua sha is also offered as part of a routine set.

The company names three active ingredients on its homepage: niacinamide, bakuchiol and moth bean extract, which it presents as an alternative to retinol [1]. Bakuchiol, a plant compound from the Indian babchi plant, is likewise described by the brand as a natural alternative to retinol; according to the company, it stimulates collagen production, reduces lines and wrinkles and helps against blemishes. It appears in the Recovery Treatment Oil.

The Recovery Treatment Oil is built on several cold-pressed oils, according to the ingredients page. These include organic argan oil, which the brand notes is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, organic apricot kernel oil, organic cranberry seed oil and cacay oil, which the company says is high in vitamins A and E and linoleic acid. The oil is scented with Damask rose oil, an essential oil distilled from fresh rose flowers.

The Balancing Night Oil contains blue tansy, an oil obtained from the flowers of the blue tansy plant, which the company says comes from Morocco. Its deep blue colour comes from a compound called chamazulene, which the brand credits with calming redness and irritation. Because the formulas contain essential oils such as rose and blue tansy, the products are not fragrance-free, although synthetic fragrance is excluded.

The water-based products rely on plant juices and hydrosols rather than added water. Organic aloe vera juice, taken from the inner gel of the plant, appears in both the Active Botanical Toner and the Hydration Booster Serum. The serum also contains betaine, a moisture-binding ingredient that the company says is obtained from sugar beet. Green tea extract is among the other listed ingredients.

The company states that its products are 100 per cent vegan and free from animal testing [1]. These are the brand's own statements; no third-party certifications, such as a vegan or cruelty-free label or a natural-cosmetics seal, are documented.

Sustainability

Cocoon Botanicals presents sustainability as part of a holistic approach. The company says it uses environmentally friendly packaging and glass bottles instead of plastic. Production takes place in a small manufactory in Germany, and the company says its products comply with the EU Cosmetics Regulation [2]. It produces in small batches, which it says keeps the products fresh, and states that the gentle manufacturing process preserves the active ingredients. In the 2021 interview, the founders described this production as regional and said the products were made fresh in a small regional manufactory.

Current status

Cocoon Botanicals is active. As of October 2026, its online shop was live and selling, with full-size products, samples, sets, tools and gift vouchers on offer, and the site carried a 2026 copyright notice. Several items, including the Balancing Night Oil, the Active Botanical Toner and the Essential Pflegeroutine set, were listed as sold out at that time. The newest customer reviews shown on the homepage date from June 2025, and homepage imagery was updated in March 2026.

The brand operates mainly direct to consumers through its own German-language website, which offers delivery within one to three days and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It also maintains accounts on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Its online magazine carries a single article, and no dated company news from the past year has been published.
