Overview
Codexial, operating as Laboratoire Codexial, is an independent French dermatological laboratory founded in 2007 by Pierre Treffel, a Doctor of Pharmacy specialising in cutaneous biology and galenic pharmacy [1]. Based at Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, a suburb of Nancy in eastern France, the company began as a maker of excipients for magistral preparations — the custom medicines that pharmacists compound by hand — and later moved into pharmaceuticals and, through its ENO line, consumer dermo-cosmetic skincare.
The laboratory remains founder-led and independent, with Treffel still serving as chief executive. A French pharmacy trade publication describes it plainly as an independent pharmaceutical laboratory [8], and the company reported revenue of €12.4 million in 2023 across a workforce of 43 [4].
Origin and founders
Codexial traces its beginnings to a gap Treffel observed in dermatological care: the shortage of suitable treatments for patients with rare or orphan skin conditions, of which the company counts roughly 400. His earlier career included work in the dermatology department of the hospital in Besançon from 1985 and research on how molecules are absorbed through the skin.
The answer the laboratory built was a catalogue of made-to-measure excipients — base preparations such as cold cream, pommade and emollient creams — that pharmacists use to compound individualised treatments. According to the company, a custom care product is prepared in a pharmacy using a Codexial excipient every minute, and more than five million such preparations have been made since the laboratory was created. Codexial says it became the leading seller of magistral-preparation excipients in France within fifteen years [1].
History and milestones
The laboratory launched in 2007 alongside its first excipients and its earliest glycolic-acid dermo-cosmetics [1]. In 2015 it became a pharmaceutical laboratory and brought out its first medication, a treatment for scabies. An export department followed in 2017. In 2021 the company introduced ENO, the consumer dermo-cosmetic brand that now carries its skincare to a general audience [1].
Ownership
Codexial presents itself as an independent laboratory with no parent company, a position supported both by its own framing and by third-party coverage [8]. Its governance pages list an internal leadership team — Treffel as chief executive, alongside a deputy chief executive and finance director, a quality-assurance and regulatory-affairs director, and a human-resources manager — but record no holding group, outside shareholders or acquisition history.
Philosophy and positioning
The company frames its work as a scientific effort to treat, repair and enhance each skin type in what it calls its uniqueness, building formulas around selected, effective ingredients. Treffel states the founding aim as formulating pleasant products with selected, effective ingredients that contribute to the wellbeing of patients and consumers. Codexial organises its identity around four stated values: exigence (rigour), éthique (ethics), engagement (commitment) and humanité (humanity).
The ENO consumer brand adopts a lighter register for the same idea. Its messaging — "your skin therapists", "science is the new cool" and a stated preference for "less talk, more results" — positions it as making dermatological skincare science accessible to a broad audience. ENO sits in the prestige range of pharmacy and parapharmacy skincare.
Products and innovation
Codexial's catalogue spans three areas: magistral-preparation excipients, dermo-cosmetic skincare and biocides, with products developed and manufactured at the Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy laboratory [3]. Beyond skincare it has patented a tick and mosquito repellent and markets a scabies-environment treatment, alongside a professional glycolic-acid peeling line.
The consumer-facing skincare runs under ENO, which gathers Codexial's dermo-cosmetic work into formulas the company describes as using novel patented complexes. The line is divided into five ranges: ENOTIME for anti-ageing, ENOLISS for blemishes and adult acne, ENOBRIGHT for pigmentation, ENOCARE for everyday hydration, and the professionally prescribed ENOCARE PRO for atopic skin. Signature products include the ENOLISS 15 peel with 15% glycolic acid, the ENOTIME Complexe Global tri-peptide cream, the ENOTIME Booster C10 vitamin C serum and the ENOTIME Star serum concentrated at 0.3% retinol. The ENOLISS range was previously sold as Neoliss [8].
Across the ENO ranges the recurring active ingredients are glycolic acid, retinol, vitamin C, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, fruit-acid (AHA) derivatives and peptides [8]. The laboratory says it analyses and integrates 91 active principles into its products and conducts more than 200 tests a year, with efficacy verified through real-condition testing under dermatological supervision [4].
Sustainability
Codexial states that production of its pharmaceutical raw materials and active dermo-cosmetic ranges is entirely carried out in France, and that it planned to convert its vehicle fleet fully to hybrids by the end of 2023 [4]. No third-party environmental or cosmetic certifications, such as Ecocert, Cosmos or vegan labels, appear in the source material.
Recognition and press
French pharmacy media have covered the brand: Pharma GDD, a pharmacy editorial and retail blog, ran a feature on the ENO ranges Enoliss, Enotime and Enobright, describing the independent laboratory and its highly concentrated active complexes [8]. No competitive awards are recorded.
Current status
Codexial is active. As of its most recent published figures it reported €12.4 million in revenue in 2023, up 12.4% on the previous year, with €6 million invested in research and development and a staff of 43 [4]. The company exports to more than ten countries, among them Romania, Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Mauritius, Vietnam, South Korea and India [5]; the Nordic region does not appear in its official distribution list. Its consumer e-commerce and social channels for ENO remain in use.
