Overview
Cotoneve is an Italian personal-care brand specialising in cotton products and everyday skincare accessories, based in Mantova. It is owned by Sisma S.p.A., a consumer-goods manufacturer founded in 1965 by the Lotti family [2]. The Cotoneve brand itself was introduced in 1975, when Sisma brought cotton buds back from a trip to America and began producing them in Italy [2]. According to its parent company and current owner, Cotoneve is the leading brand in Italy for cotton pads and cotton buds [3].
The range covers cotton pads, cotton buds, wet wipes, cleansing sponges and, more recently, a prebiotic skincare line. The brand remains active, selling predominantly in the Italian market, and its parent company changed hands at the end of 2024 [3].

Origin and founders
Sisma was founded in 1965 in Mantova by the Lotti family, beginning as a distributor of sponges and toothpicks before moving into manufacturing [2]. A decade later, in 1975, the company launched Cotoneve after encountering cotton swabs on a trip to the United States and deciding to bring the product to Italy [2]. The parent company frames this as the brand's starting point: "From a trip to America, cotton buds arrive in Italy. Welcome Cotoneve."
Because the parent and the brand have different start dates, sources give two founding years. The figure of 1965 refers to Sisma, the parent company; 1975 is the year the Cotoneve brand was introduced [2]. The two are recorded together in the company's own history, with Sisma marking 60 years and Cotoneve 50 years in 2025.
History and milestones
Through the late twentieth century, Cotoneve grew alongside its parent's expansion in cotton processing. By 1990, Sisma had begun producing private-label goods and, according to the company, held the largest market share in Italy for that segment. In 1995 it acquired the Cottonord facility in Bollate, near Milan, together with the Farmacotone brand, a step the company describes as making it Europe's largest cotton processor [2]. In 2011 the brand refreshed its logos and extended its range into body wipes and body sponges.
In 2022 Cotoneve introduced pre.B, a prebiotic skincare line, marking its move beyond cotton accessories into formulated face care [12].
Ownership
Cotoneve is one of several brands operated by Sisma S.p.A., alongside Farmacotone, Samurai and Logex. Ownership of Sisma passed to the private-equity firm Clessidra in two stages. Clessidra first entered in 2020 through a restructuring that converted the majority of bank debt into equity [13]. It then acquired full ownership of Sisma on 19 December 2024, with Clessidra Capital Credit SGR taking complete control [12]. The owner describes Sisma as a leader in Italy in the production of hydrophilic cotton and its derivatives, operating two production facilities, in Bollate and Mantova [13].
Philosophy and positioning
Cotoneve positions its products as part of a simple daily self-care routine. The company describes the beauty routine as "an essential appointment with our skin" and says it aims to turn everyday rituals into "special moments of well-being." Its stated values include openness, inclusion, respect, and care for oneself and the environment. The brand uses the tagline "We take care of you. Always." and the concept "Cotoneverending Care."
Commercially, the brand is aimed at the mass market and sold mainly in Italy, where its parent reports the strongest position in cotton pads and buds [3]. Sisma also produces private-label products for major retailers and exports to around 50 countries.
Products and innovation
Cotoneve's core catalogue centres on cotton: make-up remover pads, cotton buds, wet wipes, cleansing sponges for the face and body, and related accessories. Several lines carry specific claims — its Bio Line make-up remover pads use organic cotton with compostable packaging, while other pads are described as containing functional ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5. The make-up removing wipes are soaked in micellar water, and the brand's intimate wipes are described as enriched with a "Deo-Active molecule" to counter odours.
The pre.B skincare line, launched in 2022, is the brand's main step beyond accessories. Cotoneve describes it as prebiotic skincare built around natural prebiotics that "nourish the skin's microbiota" to support the skin's natural balance. The company states that pre.B uses ingredients of 100% natural origin, is dermatologically tested on sensitive skin, and uses FSC-certified packaging. The line spans cleansing, deeper cleansing and treatment products, including micellar water, cleansing milk, face creams and masks.
Sustainability
Cotoneve and its parent describe a sustainability programme built around the cotton supply chain. According to Sisma, its cotton is certified organic by ICEA under the Global Organic Textile Standard, and the company uses FSC-certified paper and compostable PLA bioplastic for some packaging. Sisma says it reuses 97% of its cotton waste internally and runs two photovoltaic systems that supply roughly 20% of its annual energy demand. The company also states that it developed paper-stem cotton swabs before such a shift was legally required.
Current status
The brand is active. It maintains a full product catalogue and e-commerce site, expanded into skincare with pre.B in 2022, and its parent company completed a change of ownership in December 2024 [12]. Distribution is concentrated in Italy, where the brand reports its strongest market position, although Sisma as a whole exports to around 50 countries.
