Crabtree & Evelyn is a bath, body and fragrance brand of American origin, known for its botanical, garden-inspired formulas and an aesthetic modelled on the English apothecary tradition. It traces back to a small Massachusetts soap shop opened in 1955 and took its present name in 1971 [6]. After a near-total retail collapse in 2019, the brand was relaunched as an online business and now reaches stores again through a manufacturing partner; it remains active under the Hong Kong holding company Nan Hai Corporation Ltd. The company is named after John Evelyn, a 17th-century English author, gardener and diarist, paired with the wild apple — or crab-apple — tree that appeared in its original logo. That English air, despite the brand's US roots, became part of its identity.

The business began as "The Soap Box", a shop opened by Cyrus Harvey Jr. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1955 [8]. Harvey, a co-founder of the art-house film distributor Janus Films, stocked it with unusual soaps he had gathered while travelling. In 1971, on a trip to London, he met the English designer Peter Windett, and the two began a 25-year partnership that renamed the company Crabtree & Evelyn [6].

Sources differ slightly on the founding location: the brand's own account places its early days in Boston [2], while Wikipedia and the editorial site Never Say Die Beauty specify the neighbouring city of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The two are adjacent, and Cambridge is the more precisely sourced.

The first standalone Crabtree & Evelyn store opened in Philadelphia in 1977, and the brand reached the United Kingdom in 1980 with a location on Kensington Church Street in London — partly because American tourists, taken by the English styling, had been looking for its shops there. Manufacturing sites were later established in the United States, France and the United Kingdom.

Several products and traditions defined the brand through these decades. Annual collectible mugs, introduced in 1985 as transferware initially produced by the British stoneware maker Mason's, became a recurring feature [8]. In 1993 the company partnered with the English rosarian David Austin, who named an apricot-pink rose after its Evelyn Rose collection. In 1994 it designed toiletries for British Airways' Concorde, the same year it began changing hands following Harvey's retirement.

The brand's later history was marked by financial difficulty. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009, closing 30 of its 126 American stores. A far deeper contraction followed: a Canadian bankruptcy closed 19 stores in December 2018, Singapore's 12 locations shut in January 2019, and across 2019 the company closed all of its roughly 150 retail stores in eight countries, ceased US manufacturing and relaunched as an online-only business [9]. In 2020 it introduced The Gardeners and Bali collections, and in 2021 it marked its 50th anniversary with a limited-edition kit.

Cyrus Harvey sold Crabtree & Evelyn in 1996, after roughly four decades of ownership, to the Malaysian holding company Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad, which placed it under a subsidiary called CE Holdings [6]. In 2012 that owner sold CE Holdings to the Hong Kong-based Khuan Choo International Ltd. for US$155 million. The brand passed to its current owner, the Hong Kong holding company Nan Hai Corporation Ltd., a few years later — Wikipedia records the acquisition as completing in October 2016, while the trade outlet Inside Retail Asia reports it from late 2015, likely reflecting the announcement rather than the close [6][9]. Nan Hai's interest was tied to ambitions for the Chinese market, and the company later attributed a sharp profit decline in part to losses from the brand [9].

Crabtree & Evelyn positions itself as a heritage bath and body brand built on natural, botanical ingredients, drawing on the imagery of 17th-century English "still rooms" where herbs, flowers and fruit were distilled. The company sums up its founding outlook in Harvey's principle, "Explore everything. Keep the best," and states its mission as connecting people and cultures by sharing beauty products and stories from around the world [2]. It markets itself in the prestige tier of bath, body and hair care.

The brand's primary focus is bath and body care, with fragrance as a secondary line. Its hand creams are its best-known products — the company itself refers to them as "cult" and groups longstanding scents in a dedicated Cult Collection — spanning fragrances such as Goatmilk & Oat, Pomegranate & Argan Oil, Nantucket Briar and La Source [5]. Formulas draw on botanical ingredients including rose, oat, goat milk, argan oil, lavender and verbena. Among its named ranges, the company has stated that its Naturals and Aromatherapy Distillations lines are free of SLS and parabens [7].

Since 2022 it has worked with the Canadian manufacturer Hunter Amenities International, which took over production and distribution after the 2019 collapse and reintroduced the brand into retailers such as TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Winners; Hunter reports tenfold sales growth in physical retail since the relaunch [10].
