Summary

Overview

Credo is a German manufacturer of pedicure, manicure and facial-care tools, founded in 1924 by Gustav Kracht and still run by his family [2]. The company, registered as CREDO Handelsgesellschaft mbH, builds steel grooming instruments — callus planes, nail nippers, files and clippers — rather than formulated cosmetics, and markets them under the long-standing tagline "Quality first since 1924."

The business remains active. It is family-owned into the fourth generation, employs around 45 people, and exports to more than 60 countries [8]. In 2024 it passed its 100-year anniversary, an occasion the brand marks across its website [1].

Origin and founders

Gustav Kracht came to manufacturing through invention. In 1912 he patented a can opener built around a gearwheel abutment and lever mechanism, and on 1 January 1924 he established Credo as a company for high-quality steel goods [2]. According to the company, his guiding motivation was "to simplify human everyday life through innovative and practical household instruments" [2]. That "Quality First" principle, which the firm attributes to its founder, remains the line it uses to describe itself today.

Over time Credo moved from general household goods into foot and nail care as personal grooming gained cultural importance, a shift the company links to an orientation toward what it calls the "health-conscious people of tomorrow." A German tools retailer that documents the brand's history credits Credo with inventing both the can opener and the Hornhauthobel, the callus plane that became its signature instrument [7]. The firm draws on the blade-making tradition of Solingen, the western German city long associated with knife and steel production.

History and milestones

Credo's heritage is tied to Solingen. The brand still carries a "Made in Solingen, Germany" quality seal, although its actual location has changed. The company's own site gives its headquarters as Rheinische Str. 36 in Haan [1], while some retail listings continue to describe it as Solingen-based [7]. German business press reports that the firm relocated production from Solingen to Haan in 2015; it retains the Solingen designation because the protected geographic label was legally extended to cover Haan in 1936 [8]. The company describes its German production facility as "the heart of our company."

A 2019 profile in the business publication aktiv-online described Credo as among the world market leaders in its category and the global leader in corn cutters, with roughly 45 employees, distribution to more than 60 countries, and 2018 revenue of 7.2 million euros [8]. The same report identified Gabriele Kracht as leading the firm in its fourth generation, with her daughter Nadine preparing to take over [8].

Philosophy and positioning

The company presents itself as combining Solingen tradition with innovation, summarised in its slogans "Tradition meets innovation" and "Innovative products from head to toe." Its stated core values are precision, functionality and design alongside sustainability, durable materials and fair production. Credo also frames its products around self-care and body positivity, describing its instruments as serving "a well-groomed appearance and an all-round good sense of one's body" rather than a purely functional task. Emphasis falls on ergonomic design, easy handling and high-quality materials.

Products and innovation

Credo's range covers pedicure, manicure and facial-care tools, plus specialised lines for comfort (foot-problem solutions such as heel pads and toe spreaders) and for people with diabetes, the latter using rounded safety tips to reduce injury risk. Its best-known product is the Hornhauthobel, or callus plane.

The professional Profi-Line is aimed at podiatrists, pedicurists and salon owners. It centres on callus shavers in two configurations — a lengthwise Längshobel and a crosswise Querhobel — which the brand describes as removing heavy calluses precisely and efficiently. Alongside them sit a range of nippers and forceps: corner nippers for ingrown nails, cuticle forceps, a head cutter for frontal nail access and general-purpose pedicure nippers, as well as nail files, tweezers, cuticle pushers and a comedone extractor. These tools are built from stainless steel with replaceable blades and an autoclavable construction. The brand also holds a patent for a Safety-Hobel, a safety callus plane [7]. Editorial coverage has noted that Credo's blades are sharp enough to slice a falling sheet of paper [8]. The firm has been described as serving thousands of podiatrists and foot-care professionals [7].

Sustainability

Under an initiative it calls Go Green, Credo has reworked materials and production with environmental aims. Product handles are made from bio-based "I'm green" plastic derived from sugarcane, produced in partnership with Braskem, and the company says its products and packaging can be returned to the recycling stream. The sugarcane is sourced from Brazil under what the brand describes as verified processes for fair conditions. Back cards are made entirely from recycled paper and blister packaging largely from recycled material. The company also cites carbon figures, stating that around 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide are stored per tonne of green polyethylene used.

On the production side, the brand reports that solar panels save about 200,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, and it has run a JobRad employee cycling programme since 2018, with a planned conversion of its fleet to hybrid vehicles. Manufacturing is kept in Germany, which the company links to quality control and shorter supply chains.
