Overview
Cultivator's is the consumer beauty line of Cultivator Natural Products, an Indian organic botanicals company based in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The business traces its origins to 1988 [1], when Narayan Dass Prajapati founded a small agricultural venture; the Cultivator's range of organic herbal hair colours, hair masks and powder shampoos is the brand's move from bulk ingredient supply into products sold directly to consumers. In the Nordic countries the line reaches the market through the independent distributor Miraz Nordic, which supplies professional hairdressers and retail chains in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
The brand sits at the meeting point of Ayurvedic herbal tradition and certified organic manufacturing. Its hair colours are built on plant powders such as henna, indigo and beetroot rather than ammonia, and the company markets the flagship colour as the first hair dye in the world to carry Fair for Life certification [7].
Origin and founders
The company grew out of a Rajasthan farming operation originally called Sonamukhi Udhyog. A turning point came in 2005, when Tarun Prajapati joined his father's business after completing an MSc in Medicinal Plants and rebranded the venture as Cultivator Natural Products [11]. From there it expanded from small-scale organic farming into a wider enterprise spanning cultivation, processing and finished formulations.
The founding roster is recorded differently across sources. The company's own retail site credits three members of the Prajapati family: Narayan Dass Prajapati as the original founder, with Tarun Prajapati (Managing Director) and Sanjeev Prajapati (Executive Director) named as co-founders [8]. A 2023 ANI press release carried by ThePrint names only Narayan Prajapati as founder and Tarun Prajapati as managing director and co-founder, without mentioning Sanjeev [10].
History and milestones
After the 2005 rebrand, the company scaled its processing operations, reaching roughly 100,000 square feet of capacity by 2017. In 2018 it was recognised in the India 5000 Best MSME Awards, and Tarun Prajapati received an India 500 CEO Award the same year.
In 2022 Cultivator Natural Products reported becoming the first company in the organic industry segment to receive a ZED Gold certificate from India's Ministry of MSME [13]. The following January it marked 35 years of operation at an event chaired by Union Cabinet Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat [10].
Philosophy and positioning
The company frames its identity around organic, sustainable and ethical practice, which it describes not as a method but as a foundation. Its stated mission is to promote sustainable, organic and regenerative farming under fair-for-life and fair-wild standards while making nutraceutical and cosmetic products. On its Indian retail site, the brand positions itself as a blend of Ayurveda and natural cosmetics that remains affordable, using a farmer-to-consumer model and a "seed to shipment" traceability claim.
Products and ingredients
The Cultivator's consumer range centres on hair care. Its signature product is a one-step organic herbal hair colour, sold in shades such as black, dark brown, deep chestnut and walnut, with the company claiming full grey coverage and an ammonia-free formula. A two-step kit is offered for softer black results. The colours draw on a blend of certified organic herbs including henna, indigo, beetroot, chamomile, eucalyptus, aloe vera, ziziphus and manjistha.
Beyond colour, the line includes hair masks and powder shampoos, each sold in volumizing, caring and purifying variants aimed at concerns such as hair fall, dryness and dandruff. The caring shampoo is built around the traditional Indian ingredients amla, reetha and shikakai.
The parent company holds a range of organic and cosmetic certifications, among them USDA NOP, ECOCERT, COSMOS Organic and COSMOS Natural, alongside Fair for Life. The brand describes its one-step colour as the first beauty product in India to carry that Fair for Life certification.
Sustainability
Sustainability is central to how Cultivator Natural Products presents itself. The company says it cultivates around 10,000 hectares of certified organic farmland across some 25 projects in India, worked by roughly 5,000 farmers; under its fair-trade approach it reports paying farmers about 10 percent above market rates and reinvesting 5 percent into community development [5]. It also states a goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2030.
European distribution and logistics run through a subsidiary in Sofia, Bulgaria, described by the company as a hub connecting its botanicals and finished products to international markets.
Recognition
Editorial coverage of the brand is largely confined to Indian business media and award listings. Business Standard reported the company's 2022 ZED Gold certification, and ThePrint covered the 2023 anniversary event with the water-resources minister. India 5000 listed the company among its Best MSME award winners for 2018 and recognised Tarun Prajapati in its India 500 CEO Awards [14]. No coverage in international beauty press was found, and the brand does not have a Wikipedia entry.
Current status
Cultivator's and its parent company are active. Cultivator Natural Products reports more than 400 employees, has published annual CSR and ESG impact reports through the 2024-25 fiscal year, and maintains active social media accounts [10]. Its consumer line continues to be distributed in the Nordic markets through Miraz Nordic, while the wider manufacturing business operates internationally, including the European base in Bulgaria.
