Summary

Overview

Cystiphane is a hair-care brand belonging to Laboratoires Bailleul, a family-owned pharmaceutical group that develops medicines, food supplements and dermo-cosmetic products. The company calls Cystiphane its "historic" hair brand [10]. The brand is built around two everyday scalp and hair concerns, hair loss and dandruff, with one range for each: shampoo, lotion and a food supplement for thinning hair, and a pair of anti-dandruff shampoos known simply as S and DS.

The brand grew out of the parent company's decades of work with cystine, a sulphur-containing amino acid that forms part of keratin, the protein hair is made of. Laboratoires Bailleul was founded in 1949 [11], and the international company that publishes its websites today is registered in Geneva, Switzerland [8]. No launch year for Cystiphane itself has been published. The brand is active, with current ranges presented on the group's German and French websites.

Origin & founders

Cystiphane has no founding story of its own; its origins are those of Laboratoires Bailleul. According to the company, that story begins in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, when a pharmacist, Jean Bailleul, met a physician, Alphonse Bigou [11]. The French pharmacy trade paper Le Quotidien du Pharmacien places the meeting on the Vosges front, in a light surgical ambulance unit where the two men served alongside Jeanne Baufumé, a Red Cross nurse [14].

After the armistice, the company says, Bailleul returned to pharmacy work and Bigou practised as a general practitioner. Bigou became a pupil of Lucie Randoin, and the two went on to study cystine and its uses in dermatology. Laboratoires Bailleul describes the discovery of the role certain amino acids play in hair growth as decisive for its creation. The enthusiasm those findings generated led the two friends to set up the laboratory in 1949. A French online pharmacy's presentation of the range adds that the company was built around a flagship product, Cystine Bailleul [13].

History & milestones

Cystine remained the thread running through the company's work. In 2012, Le Quotidien du Pharmacien marked four decades of Cystine B6 Bailleul under the headline "40 ans d'antichute" ("40 years against hair loss"). The paper described the medicine, which pairs cystine with vitamin B6, as having been used against hair loss for several generations, even though its approved uses had changed over time [14]. The same retailer summary cited above notes that the laboratory launched its first vitamin supplement tablet in 1975 and later broadened into dermatology, including acne, psoriasis and hair loss.

Cystiphane's own dated history begins in the trade press. On 10 July 2014, Le Quotidien du Pharmacien reported that Bailleul, after 40 years of working on the cystine and vitamin B6 combination, was extending its offer with the Cystiphane range [16]. The report presented a new food supplement against hair loss, with cystine, vitamin B6 and zinc named in its subtitle, and described Cystiphane as a new care formula to preserve the hair. It does not say outright whether 2014 marked the brand's first appearance or the expansion of an existing line.

In September 2021, the same paper carried a short news item from Bailleul headlined "Cystiphane avec RoseUp"; the content of the item is reserved for subscribers [15]. By the mid-2020s the parent company was describing itself, on its French homepage, as having worked in dermatology "for more than 75 years".

Ownership

Cystiphane is owned by Laboratoires Bailleul, whose German site describes it as the company's long-established hair-care brand [2]. The legal notices on the group's websites name the publisher as Laboratoires Bailleul International, a Swiss public limited company with its registered office in Geneva and share capital of CHF 110,000 [12]. The German site also gives a business address in Frankfurt am Main for the group's operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The company describes itself as 100 percent family-owned. It reports 250 marketing authorisations for medicines worldwide, a presence in 56 countries and 16 subsidiaries [3]. No acquisition involving Cystiphane has been documented.

Within the group, Cystiphane sits alongside other dermatology brands. On the French website it appears in the brand menu next to Mycogel and Psoriatec, and a French pharmacy retailer groups it with Apaisac and Femilyane. The group also markets the medicine Cystine B6 Bailleul, which shares Cystiphane's focus on cystine and hair loss.

Philosophy & positioning

On its French brand page, Cystiphane is described as having been "designed to respond to hair and scalp problems". Its tagline there is "Agir à la racine de vos problèmes de cheveux", roughly "acting at the root of your hair problems". The German page speaks of "simple and effective routines" for dandruff and for chronic or reactive hair loss.

The positioning leans clinical rather than cosmetic. Laboratoires Bailleul presents itself as a dermatology company focused on external skin and scalp conditions it describes as painful and troublesome. Rather than lifestyle imagery, the brand's websites are built around explanatory articles on the causes of hair loss, on dandruff and on cystine, and around a free online hair test. The company says the test takes about three minutes and ends with a recommended care routine.

The parent group lists three values: expertise, availability and commitment. It says its commitment is to treat patients' lives as a priority and to help make those lives better. It also speaks of taking a further step towards social and environmental engagement through concrete action, though it sets out no specific targets.

Products & innovation

Cystiphane is split into two ranges.

The strength and vitality range (sold in German as "Stärke und Vitalität" and in French as "Force et vitalité") targets hair loss in both men and women. It has three products: a food supplement, an anti-hair-loss shampoo and an anti-hair-loss lotion. The brand distinguishes between two kinds of shedding. Reactive hair loss, it explains, starts suddenly, usually around three months after a triggering event, and is reversible. Chronic hair loss is described as hormonal or hereditary, with a shortened growth phase and gradually thinner hair. The company treats losing more than about 100 hairs a day as a sign worth noticing.

The range rests on cystine and vitamin B6. Laboratoires Bailleul calls itself a pioneer in the dermatological use of cystine and says it has developed formulas that optimise the combined action of the two ingredients [6]. Its explainer adds that zinc and selenium are among the minerals that may appear in cystine-based preparations. As supporting evidence, the range page cites a 1999 laboratory study by Matheson and colleagues, published in Experimental Dermatology. That study was carried out on isolated human hair follicles, and the page says higher doses of cystine increased the follicles' growth rate and the diameter of the hair fibre [5]. The page does not present results from clinical trials of the products themselves on people.

The anti-dandruff range consists of two shampoos: Cystiphane S, a normalising shampoo, and Cystiphane DS, a more intensive one. A French pharmacy also lists a leave-in DS lotion. The company promises a "triple action" for these shampoos: antifungal, keratolytic (loosening and removing flakes) and soothing [7]. It also says they work from the first application and help with the itching and redness that often accompany dandruff. No study is cited for these claims, and the brand's range page does not name the specific active compounds. To frame the problem, the brand cites a 2015 scientific review by Borda and Wikramanayake for the estimate that about one person in two will have dandruff during their lifetime. It separates dry dandruff, with fine white flakes, from oily dandruff, which is thicker, yellowish and linked to an oily scalp.

Beyond these core lines, the same French pharmacy lists seven Cystiphane products in total. They include Cystiphane Anagen tablets for chronic hair loss and Cystiphane Fort tablets for hair and nails. No third-party certifications are documented for the brand.

Current status

Cystiphane is active. Its brand and range pages, including the online hair test, are live on the German and French websites of Laboratoires Bailleul. The group also runs country sites for markets including Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. No product launch within the past year has been dated publicly. The most recent dated third-party mention of the brand is the September 2021 trade-press item.
