Summary

Overview

D:SOL, stylised in full as D:SOL MMXVI, is an independent niche perfume house based in Berlin, Germany. It was founded by Dennis K. Werner, a beauty-industry specialist who describes more than twenty years in the sector, and its fragrances are developed around a creative axis that runs between Berlin and the Spanish island of Mallorca [8].

Sources differ on the founding date. Editorial coverage and the brand's own name — MMXVI is the Roman numeral for 2016 — place the brand's establishment in 2016, the year Werner conceived it [8]. The company's about page dates the house to September 2020, when its first fragrances reached the market after roughly three and a half years of development [2]. The two figures describe the same history from different points: 2016 as the year of conception, 2020 as the commercial launch.

Origin and founders

The house was created by Dennis K. Werner, listed in company filings as owner and managing director of D:SOL MMXVI Perfumes. According to an editorial profile, Werner built the brand after years spent travelling between Mallorca and Berlin, drawing on the islands' botanicals, light and atmospheric contrast [8]. The name folds several meanings together: the "D" stands for Dennis and "SOL" means sun, while the letters also honour the first names of his daughters, Sophie and Lynn [8].

Werner has described an intuitive approach to composition. "When I evaluate a fragrance, I close my eyes and become completely quiet," he is quoted as saying. "I don't see colours — I simply notice when a smile appears. That's when I know the melody of the fragrance is right."

Philosophy and positioning

D:SOL frames its work around what it calls a deeper reading of the Mediterranean rather than a coastal cliché. "With D:SOL I was never interested in the obvious Mediterranean — the postcard of citrus and coastline," the founder says on the brand site. "What fascinates me lies beneath" [1]. The house pairs this idea with a design language it terms "a New Mediterranean Minimalism," built on clear lines, reduced forms and what it describes as a deliberate contrast between freshness and warmth.

The brand carries the tagline "Sunshine state of mind," represented by a golden hexagon symbol. Planar Parfums, a fragrance editorial site, describes the house as offering "a truly personal approach to contemporary luxury" [8].

Products and innovation

The first collection comprised three Eau de Parfums — Tesoro, Herbes and Terram — launched in September 2020 [2]. The range has since grown to include Sombra, Cistus, Isleta and, in 2025, Ládano [9]. Compositions draw on a Mediterranean palette of citrus oils, aromatic herbs, woods and resins, with recurring materials such as patchouli, benzoin, labdanum and oud. Herbes, inspired by an 18th-century Mallorcan herbal liqueur, is described in editorial coverage as a green composition built from 45 ingredients [8].

The first fragrances were created by Berlin-based French perfumer Marie Urban Le Febvre [8]. The company lists production partners in several countries: fragrance manufacturing through Accords & Parfums in Grasse and the Robertet Group, with Carbonnel in Spain; bottles and caps produced in Spain; and packaging in Germany [2].

On formulation, the house states that its perfumes are vegan and cruelty-free, and free from phthalates, parabens, sulfates, palm oil, pesticides and GMOs, with no artificial colorants. It frames environmental responsibility as a starting point rather than a marketing line, stating that "sustainability is not a promise but a principle."

Recognition

D:SOL has drawn coverage in niche-fragrance media. Fragrantica introduced the house in 2020 as a new brand, describing its debut trio as "simple, sunny, and sensual" and writing that the scents "dodge the sun-tan lotion, tropical flowers, and salty seawater vibes" in favour of something more introspective [10]. CaFleureBon editor Ermano Picco compared meeting Werner at the Pitti fair to "the first editions of the fair, when niche perfumery was more expression than marketing."

The brand's own reviews page lists several recognitions, including a "Best of Scent" listing for Terram in 2020 and for Sombra in 2023, and a "Top Ten Perfumes 2025" placement for Ládano [6]. These awards are aggregated and presented by the company and have not been independently verified against the original publications.

Current status

D:SOL remains an active, independently run house. Its most recent recorded activity is the 2025 release of the Ládano Eau de Parfum [9]. The company is registered in Berlin as D:SOL MMXVI Perfumes and appears to sell primarily direct to consumers through its own online store; its "Find Us" page lists no physical stockists, so its retail footprint cannot be confirmed beyond online sales.
