Overview
DDD is a German skin balm, sold as DDD Hautbalsam ("DDD skin balm"), and the oldest product in the portfolio of the Dr. Beckmann Group, the family-owned household and personal-care company formerly known as delta pronatura. According to the group, the balm was invented by an American dermatologist, Dr. Davies Dennis, and its production and distribution passed to the Berlin pharmacist Gerhard Krauss in 1934 [2]. The company that grew from that pharmacy business later took its name, Delta, from the letter D in the original brand.
DDD has no website of its own and does not appear among the brands the group presents on its corporate site. It is nonetheless still made and sold, which makes it an unusual case: a single-product heritage brand that outlived its own corporate identity and became the root of a much larger business.
Origin & founders
The group's own account of its history opens with DDD. In its words, Gerhard Krauss took over Schäfer's pharmacy in Berlin in 1934 "and with it the production and distribution of DDD skin balm" [2]. The same passage credits the formula to Dr. Davies Dennis, described as an American dermatologist. The company does not say when or where the balm was first made, so the year of the brand's creation is unknown. The 1934 date marks when the Berlin business took charge of it, not the invention itself.
A trade article tells the origin slightly differently. Writing in 2016, the pharmacy trade publication APOTHEKE ADHOC dated the group's roots to the founding of Schäfer's Apotheke in Berlin in 1934 and named DDD skin balm as its first product [10]. Both accounts agree on the year, the city and the balm's place at the start of the story. They differ on one point: the company describes Krauss taking over an existing pharmacy, while the trade article describes the pharmacy being founded that year.
The inventor is not presented as a founder of the business, and no other individuals are credited with creating the brand. Krauss is the first named figure in the company's line of ownership, which later passed to the Beckmann family; the group's history pictures the pharmacist Dr. Klaus Beckmann in 1948 as its second generation.
History & milestones
The early decades of DDD are told through the group's timeline, in which the balm is the only product mentioned. During the Second World War, the company says, the raw materials for DDD were rationed. In 1942 it secured supplies so that production could continue [2].
After the war the business moved west. The group places its move to the state of Hesse in 1948, first to a bunker in Offenbach and then to Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen, while the 2016 APOTHEKE ADHOC profile gives 1951 as the year of the move to Frankfurt [10]. These dates concern the company rather than the balm itself.
The most lasting mark DDD left on the company came in 1958. That year, according to the group, the firm then trading as "DDD Laboratorium und Verkauf" (DDD Laboratory and Sales) became a new company, Delta-Vertrieb [2]. The Greek letter Delta was chosen, the company explains, both as a nod to the owners' classical education and as a reference to the original brand DDD. The name carried through into delta pronatura, under which the company traded for decades. The "DDD Laboratorium" name itself survives on the balm's packaging to this day.
From there the timeline turns to other products and markets. The company relocated to Egelsbach in 2001 after its three production sites in Neu-Isenburg reached capacity, and it marked 75 years of delta pronatura in 2009. Over the following years it opened subsidiaries in China, Switzerland, Mexico, France and the United Kingdom. DDD does not feature in these later entries.
In 2025 delta pronatura GmbH and its domestic and foreign subsidiaries adopted a common outward identity as the Dr. Beckmann Group [3]. Current retail listings of the balm name Dr. Beckmann Group GmbH as its manufacturer.
Ownership
DDD belongs to the Dr. Beckmann Group, whose operating company is delta pronatura GmbH. The group describes itself as an owner-managed family business now in its fourth generation. In 2024 Nils Beckmann, son of Heiner Beckmann, became chief executive in a newly formed four-member management board, and a four-member advisory board was set up alongside it.
The group's best-known brand is Dr. Beckmann, a line of stain removers and household cleaning products. Its brand overview lists its own brands Dr. Beckmann, Carbona, Bullrich and Fess'nett, along with brands it distributes for others, including Bi-Oil, Blistex, Jordan and fenjal [8]. DDD is not among them. The group says it is present at twelve locations worldwide and that its products are sold in more than 70 countries [1]. In 2013 it received the Hessian Export Award in the category for innovative export strategies.
Sources on the company's own site disagree on where it is based. The legal notice gives the registered seat and postal address as Kurt-Schumacher-Ring in Egelsbach [7], and the history page says the company has remained in Egelsbach since its 2001 move. The group's "About us" page, however, describes its headquarters as being in Frankfurt, in Hesse [1], and the legal notice also lists an office address in Frankfurt.
Products & innovation
The brand consists of a single product, DDD Hautbalsam, a skin balm sold in a 50 ml tube [11]. The packaging is green and white and carries the name "DDD Laboratorium, Hautbalsam". The balm is classed as skincare, and the company presents it simply as the product it began with, without a separate description of its own. No certifications, patents or clinical studies are documented for it.
Current status
DDD is active. The balm remains on sale under its long-standing name, with the Dr. Beckmann Group as its manufacturer [11]. It has no dedicated brand website or social media presence, and the group's public material refers to it mainly as part of its company history rather than as a current brand.
