Summary

Overview

Defender is a United States razor brand specialising in cartridge razor systems, owned by Rolling Razor, Inc., a Los Angeles company. It sells interchangeable three-blade cartridges and refillable handles directly to consumers, positioning itself as a lower-cost alternative to mainstream cartridge razors. The same product line is sold in Europe under the Boldking name, through a separate company that holds European distribution rights [4].

The brand is small but currently active, with recent site updates and product reviews dated into 2026. It markets itself chiefly through its own online store and an optional refill subscription, and has begun appearing with Nordic and German retailers alongside its US operation.

Origin

Defender grew out of Rolling Razor, Inc., the parent company that developed and previously sold the brand's predecessor product line. According to Rolling Razor's account, its two founders met "in early 2000" and, within months, had both the concept for a new shaving instrument and a first working prototype. The company says the following eight years were spent on hundreds of focus groups and repeated prototype refinements.

The exact launch year of the Defender brand itself is not documented. Rolling Razor dates its own origin to 2000 [3], but that is the founding of the parent company rather than of Defender, which appears to have reached market later, after the long research-and-development period described in the same source. No source states a specific founding year for the Defender brand, and the names of the founders are not disclosed on the company's public materials. The earlier Rolling Razor line has since been discontinued, and the company now directs customers to Defender instead [4].

Products

Defender sells a modular razor system built around interchangeable parts. Its cartridges come in three variants intended for different skin sensitivities — Regular, Sensitive and Extra Sensitive — alongside a styling blade. Two handle styles anchor the range: a lightweight SoftGrip handle with a non-slip rubber grip, and a heavier metal Chrome Series handle offered in several finishes. A matching Chrome Base lets the razor stand on a countertop to dry between uses. The company also sells shave creme and shave oil.

The brand frames its design around a set of named engineering features, including independent blade suspension, embedded safety guards, anti-friction gliding strips and an easy-rinse head said to resist clogging. Defender states that its system is backed by more than 40 patents worldwide and is produced on a robotic assembly line [6]. Handles and blades are manufactured in Israel, with other shaving products made in the United States [4].

Philosophy & positioning

Defender presents itself as an affordable, engineering-led option in the cartridge razor category. The company's stated mission is, in its own words, "to revolutionize the shaving industry, by offering a real alternative to high cost razors without sacrificing quality" [6]. In practice it emphasises patent-backed design and a customer-direct model: refills can be bought through an optional subscription that the brand says can be cancelled or changed at any time, rather than a mandatory commitment.

Independent reviews place its pricing as budget-competitive within the cartridge segment. The wet-shaving publication Sharpologist reported cartridge costs comparable to mainstream rivals, and described the brand's audience as cost-conscious cartridge users, travellers seeking a TSA-friendly option, and people prone to irritation from multi-blade cartridges [4].

Ownership

Defender is owned by Rolling Razor, Inc., based in Los Angeles. The brand was previously known through Rolling Razor's own product line, now discontinued.

A separate corporate relationship concerns the European market. Coverage by Sharpologist, wet-shaving forums and the brand's own social-media replies indicates that Defender and the Dutch brand Boldking sell the same blades and handles [4]. The nature of the link is, however, distribution rather than common ownership: Boldking is a separately incorporated company founded in Amsterdam in 2012 [9], and it holds European distribution rights to the product line. Boldking operates as a grooming subscription service across multiple European countries and has raised growth capital from European investors [11]. The two therefore share a product but are distinct companies.

Recognition

Defender has been reviewed in niche wet-shaving media rather than receiving formal awards. Sharpologist published a long-form review describing it as a relatively new entrant in the cartridge razor space and praising its easy-rinse cartridge design, with the reviewer selecting it as a preferred travel razor [4]. Shave Magazine tested the razor and highlighted what it called a "close, smooth shaving experience due to its anatomical design that glides over your face surface with three independent blade suspensions" [5].

Current status

Defender is an active brand. Its homepage carried a site-version timestamp from May 2026, and editorial coverage and customer testimonials date into early 2026 [1]. RocketReach and LinkedIn list it as a very small operation, on the order of a handful of employees. Distribution spans more than one region: beyond its US store, the homepage promotes availability at the Nordic retailer Lyko and the German drugstore chain Müller, and points to a separate Israeli website, while the matching European line trades under the Boldking name.
