Overview
Derma Sun is the sun-care line of the Danish skincare brand Derma, produced by DermaPharm A/S in Fårup, in East Jutland. The wider Derma brand was launched in 2006 as what the company describes as a Danish counterpart to the established beauty industry, focused on body care free from unnecessary chemicals [1]. Within that range, Derma Sun has become the most prominent line: DermaPharm calls it the market leader in sunscreen in Denmark and "the favourite choice amongst Danes when it comes to sun protection" [2].
The line is positioned around allergy-safe, eco-certified formulation rather than cosmetic claims. Its products carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, AllergyCertified and The Vegan Society label, and the company markets them as free of perfume, parabens and dyes [3]. The brand remains active; its parent company was acquired by the private-equity firm ARCHIMED in October 2025 [4].
Origin and background
The Derma brand traces its roots to DermaPharm A/S, which was established in 1980 as, in the company's words, "a small one-man business with big dreams of creating mild, environmentally-friendly skin care products" [5]. The founder is not named in the company's own accounts, which describe the origin only as a one-person business. DermaPharm has remained Danish-owned through most of its history and is based at Europavej 10 in Fårup, in northern Jutland.
Derma itself launched in 2006. According to the company, it was the first in Denmark to release a complete skincare series in which every product carried both the official Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the Asthma-Allergy Denmark label [1]. That positioning — pure body care without unnecessary additives — became the foundation for all later lines, including Sun.
Products and ingredients
The Derma Sun range covers roughly twenty products across several formats: sun lotions and sprays at SPF 30 and 50, specialised formats such as roll-on, stick and oil, dedicated children's sunscreens, lip care, after-sun products, and self-tanning and body-scrub items [3]. The company describes the sunscreens as water-resistant, light-textured and fast-absorbing, and as protecting against both UVA and UVB rays.
Recurring ingredients across the formulations include glycerine, aloe vera, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, coconut oil, shea butter and almond oil. The line sits at a drugstore price tier and is sold through multiple channels; DermaPharm supplies both branded products and private-label solutions to consumers, hospitals and institutions.
Philosophy and positioning
Derma's stated promise is "0% unnecessary chemicals - 100% respect for your body and our planet" [6]. The company frames the brand around two ideas it sums up as respecting the body and respecting nature, aimed at people who read labels carefully and prefer to avoid unnecessary chemicals. The Sun line extends this to UV protection: effective coverage that avoids what the brand considers superfluous additives while staying easy to apply and breathable.
Certification is central to that positioning. Beyond the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and AllergyCertified status, the company says its products are recommended by Asthma Allergy Nordic, and that additional Derma lines have earned organic certification through Ecocert [7]. For sun care specifically, DermaPharm also describes the formulation as coral-friendly and the brand's website as carbon-neutral and supporting climate projects.
Recognition
Derma's sun products were voted Best in Test by the Danish Consumer Council THINK (Forbrugerrådet TÆNK) in five consecutive years, from 2016 through 2020 [2]. The parent company received the Danish Industry Award of the Year in 2021.
The line has also been recognised outside Denmark. In the Norwegian Consumer Council's (Forbrukerrådet) 2023 sunscreen test, four Derma products received green smiley faces — the top rating — described as swan-marked and entirely free of harmful chemicals, with no suspected hormone-disrupting or allergy-causing substances and no perfume or nanoparticles [8]. Norwegian editorial coverage has likewise listed Derma Sun among recommended vegan-certified sunscreens for sensitive skin.
Ownership
Derma Sun is owned through DermaPharm A/S, whose portfolio also includes the Derma, DermaKnowlogy and Avivir brands [5]. In 2020 the company expanded its Fårup facilities by 7,000 square metres, more than doubling the size of its original premises.
In October 2025, DermaPharm A/S was acquired by ARCHIMED, a healthcare-focused private-equity firm, in what the announcement described as the eighth investment of its MED III fund [4]. CEO Mikkel Egelund Jensen reinvested proceeds from the sale alongside the new owner. The press release identified Derma as the market leader in sunscreen in Denmark.
Company sources differ on the size of DermaPharm's workforce: the brand-facing dermaofficial.com lists a staff of 100 [9], while the parent site dermapharm-dk.com cites more than 120 employees [5] — a discrepancy likely reflecting growth between site updates.
Current status
Derma Sun is an active brand line, with a current product range listed on dermaofficial.com and continued distribution across Nordic markets. The October 2025 acquisition by ARCHIMED, in which management reinvested, points to continued operation rather than a wind-down.
