Summary

Overview

Deumavan is a German range of medical skin-protection and care products for the external intimate and anal area, made for both women and men. It is produced and owned by Kaymogyn GmbH, a Berlin company founded in 2002 by the gynaecologist and microbiologist Prof. Dr. Eiko E. Petersen to manufacture and sell the ointment he had developed for his own patients [9]. The range is sold without prescription through pharmacies [11].

The brand is built around a single core product, the Deumavan Schutzsalbe (protective ointment), a water-free fatty ointment based on purified paraffins. Around it sit a wash lotion, a care cream and vaginal suppositories. Deumavan remains active: in 2026 both the manufacturer's own brand website and the site of its Swiss distributor were live with current product ranges.

Origin & founders

Eiko E. Petersen was a gynaecologist, microbiologist and infection epidemiologist who ran a special clinic for vulvar diseases at the University Women's Hospital in Freiburg. According to the company, he was at the time the first and only gynaecologist in Germany who was also a habilitated microbiologist, meaning he held the senior academic qualification to teach the subject at university level [9]. The brand's biography of him says this double training let him see connections that others missed, and credits him with research on sepsis, HIV, chlamydia and changes to genital skin.

The same account describes him as a hands-on doctor. It says he paid out of his own pocket for the development of a special colposcope, an instrument for magnified examination, so that he could take images of mucous membranes in patients who came to his clinic.

The ointment came out of that clinical work. As the company tells the story, Petersen could not find a satisfactory remedy for the skin problems he saw in the intimate area. He began testing formulas himself and, after several months, arrived at the recipe for a fatty ointment intended to give medical skin protection to that area. In 2002 he founded Kaymogyn GmbH to manufacture and sell it under the name Deumavan Schutzsalbe. Kaymogyn says that simple application and very good skin tolerance mattered most to him in developing it.

Petersen has since died. The company now refers to him as having been, during his lifetime, one of Germany's leading gynaecologists, infectiologists and microbiologists, and says it continues to work towards his aim of easing intimate complaints over the long term and giving those affected a better quality of life [8].

History & milestones

Kaymogyn says it has worked since its founding alongside medical professionals, naming gynaecologists, dermatologists, urologists, midwives, physiotherapists and nursing specialists as the groups it supports.

A clinical study of the ointment was published in 2016 by J. M. Bohbot and R. Druckmann in the journal J Genit Syst Disor, under the title "Efficacy and Tolerance of a New Ointment in Non-Infectious Vulvitis, Anitis and Balanitis". The brand cites this paper as the main clinical evidence for the product [2].

In autumn 2017 the Swiss company Biomed AG began distributing the Deumavan range in Switzerland [2]. Biomed, founded in Zurich in 1951, describes itself as an independent trading company for prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical products in the Swiss market. It runs a separate Deumavan website in German, French and Italian.

Today the manufacturer's range also includes a wash lotion, offered like the ointment in a neutral and a lavender-scented version, as well as a care cream and vaginal suppositories. The manufacturer's site now publishes content in German, English, French and Italian.

Ownership

Deumavan belongs to Kaymogyn GmbH, which is based on Dietzgenstraße in Berlin. The company describes itself as an independent, family-owned business [8]. Its corporate website lists Mirko Wagner and Alain Cappelle as managing directors, with a small team covering supply chain, finance, marketing, medical affairs, quality assurance, regulatory affairs and a field sales force [11].

Biomed AG, which operates the Swiss Deumavan website, is a distributor rather than an owner. Its own description of the arrangement presents Deumavan as the product range of the German manufacturer Kaymogyn. No acquisitions involving the brand are documented.

Philosophy & positioning

Deumavan positions itself in the space between cosmetics and medicine. The company describes its products as medical skin protection and care for the sensitive skin of the whole intimate area, and lists three promises: products developed by practising gynaecologists, pharmaceutical quality from Germany, and dermatological testing.

The two websites speak in different registers. The Swiss distributor uses the tagline "Schonende Intimpflege für jeden Tag" (gentle intimate care for every day), while the manufacturer's German site opens with the wordplay "Deumavan – Genial fürs Genital!", roughly "brilliant for the genitals".

Both sites frame intimate skin as skin under daily strain. The Swiss site points to ordinary mechanical stress from walking, sitting, cycling, sport and sex, and argues that the area therefore deserves particular care. Kaymogyn states a long-term ambition of becoming a leading point of contact for medical skin protection across Europe.

The company's ties to the medical profession run beyond its origin story. With the online education provider MedCram, Kaymogyn offers free, certified continuing-education modules for doctors on dermatological, gynaecological and urological topics, among them vulvodynia, conditions of the vulvar skin and lichen sclerosus in children [11]. The brand's website also has a section for professionals, with downloads, sample orders and a list of trade fairs and congresses, as well as a separate area for pharmacies.

Products & innovation

The Deumavan Schutzsalbe is the centre of the range. It is meant for the external genitals of both sexes, the perineum and the anal area. In Switzerland it is classed as a medical device, sold in 50, 100 and 125 ml sizes, and comes either unscented or with a light lavender scent. The distributor describes its texture as very soft and says it can help relieve skin irritation with burning, itching and dryness, protect against drying out and help prevent damage to the skin. It may be applied several times a day.

The ointment is based on a blend of highly purified paraffins. The brand says it contains no preservatives such as parabens [1], and it markets the product as hormone-free and suitable for daily use. On its ingredients pages, the manufacturer singles out four components across the range: paraffin, which it calls a versatile protective substance, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and almond oil [10].

The rest of the range covers related needs:

- Deumavan Waschlotion, a soap-free wash lotion for the external intimate and anal area, designed to put lipids back into the skin. The brand says it is free of microplastics, silicones and parabens and protects the skin's natural acid mantle, its slightly acidic protective surface layer. It is also promoted for use when shaving the intimate area. - Deumavan Pflegecreme, a moisturising cream for sensitive intimate skin or skin prone to dryness. - Deumavan Vaginalovula, vaginal suppositories that provide moisturising protection for vaginal dryness.

The line-up is not identical in every market. The Swiss distributor carries only the ointment and the wash lotion, while the German manufacturer lists all four products.

The ointment's main evidence comes from the 2016 study. According to the Swiss distributor, it followed 80 adult patients, 60 women and 20 men, with symptoms such as itching, burning or skin lesions linked to various underlying conditions. After six months of applying the ointment twice a day, 73.8 per cent reported a clear improvement and more than 30 per cent were free of symptoms [2].

The brand also presents the ointment as a supporting treatment for lichen sclerosus, a chronic skin disease of the intimate area. It summarises the evidence as showing that daily use alongside topical cortisone improved both symptoms and quality of life [6]. Its websites carry information pages on related complaints, including anal fissures, balanitis, phimosis, vaginal dryness, menopausal symptoms and intimate care after cancer treatment.

No third-party certifications for the products are documented.

Current status

Deumavan is an active brand. As of 2026, the manufacturer's site deumavan.com carried a 2026 Kaymogyn copyright notice and listed four products, while the Swiss site deumavan.ch linked to pharmacy and drugstore partners [7]. The products are sold mainly through pharmacies, both local and online, and the German site offers a service for ordering from a nearby pharmacy, which it says usually delivers the same day.
