Summary

Overview

Dexeryl is a French range of emollient skincare for dry skin, owned by the Pierre Fabre Group [6]. Built around a cream that combines glycerin, petrolatum and paraffin, the range is aimed at people of all ages with dry, itchy or easily irritated skin, including those living with atopic dermatitis (eczema). It is sold mainly through pharmacies and is positioned as medical skincare for the whole family.

What sets Dexeryl apart from most skincare brands is its regulatory past. Its core cream was long sold in France as a medicine. According to the French drug reference Vidal, Pierre Fabre stopped marketing the medicines Dexeryl and Dexerylcare in March 2019, and a new line with medical-device status took their place [10]. The brand remains active today, and its current site lists the emollient cream as a medical device [8].

History & milestones

The brand does not name a launch year. Instead, it says it has been caring for dry skin for more than 30 years, working over that period with dermatologists, paediatricians and other health professionals. The Pierre Fabre page dedicated to the range likewise speaks of three decades of expertise.

For much of that time the cream was a pharmacy medicine. Vidal describes the original products as emollient creams containing glycerol, petrolatum and liquid paraffin, used to treat dry-skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis (a condition that leaves the skin dry and scaly) and psoriasis [10]. In 2019 the medicine versions were withdrawn from the French market, with remaining stock sold until it ran out. A replacement line, Dexeryl DM, was announced with medical-device status rather than medicine status, in 50 g, 250 g and 500 g sizes.

In the years since, the range has grown beyond a single cream. It now includes a nourishing lotion, a shower cream, a cleansing oil and a moisturising shower gel, and more recently a separate line for acne-prone skin called Dexeclear.

Ownership

Dexeryl belongs to the Pierre Fabre Group, a French pharmaceutical and dermo-cosmetics company with roots in the Tarn area of southern France. The group traces its story to 1951, when the pharmacist and botanist Pierre Fabre opened a pharmacy in Castres; the Pierre Fabre laboratories followed in 1962. According to the group, it is the second-largest dermo-cosmetics laboratory in the world and the second-largest private French pharmaceutical company. It reported total revenue of 2.3 billion euros in 2018.

The group's ownership structure is unusual. Pierre Fabre states that 86 percent of the company is held by the Pierre Fabre Foundation, a recognised public-interest foundation, while employees hold 8.6 percent [6]. The brand's websites are published by Pierre Fabre Médicament, a group company registered in Lavaur, France [3].

Within the group, Dexeryl sits alongside other pharmacy skincare and haircare brands, including Eau Thermale Avène, A-Derma, Klorane, Ducray and René Furterer.

Philosophy & positioning

Dexeryl presents itself as a deliberately simple range. The company describes "a simple product range that meets your essential needs", and frames its approach around three values: dermatological expertise, pragmatism and universalism. In practice, this means short ingredient lists, a small number of products, and a stated aim of making the range suitable for all ages, skin types and budgets. On its international site, the brand says it is committed to developing solutions that are "affordable to everyone".

The brand's German tagline, "Medizinische Hautpflege für die ganze Familie", translates as medical skincare for the whole family. Its websites organise products around skin conditions rather than beauty concerns. Listed topics include atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis, xerosis (abnormally dry skin, including in older people and in people with kidney disease), dry feet in people with diabetes, skin changes during menopause, and redness caused by radiotherapy.

Dexeryl also makes a point of where its products are made. The brand says it has chosen to manufacture all of its products in France, and that every Dexeryl product is made and packed in Pierre Fabre factories, which it links to traceability and keeping local jobs. It names two production sites, in Gien and in Soual [4]. The wider group says that more than 90 percent of its industrial production and all of its research take place in France.

Products & innovation

The centre of the range is the Dexeryl emollient cream, known in German as Pflegecreme. Its formula rests on three main components: 15 percent glycerin, which binds moisture in the skin; 8 percent petrolatum, which forms a partly sealing protective film; and 2 percent pharmaceutical-grade paraffin [5]. The company says this combination both hydrates the skin and helps restore its protective barrier, limiting water loss. The formulas are described as fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin.

Around the cream, the range includes:

- a nourishing lotion for larger areas of the body - a shower cream and a cleansing oil for washing dry skin - a moisturising shower gel, described as a two-in-one product that cleanses and hydrates

The Dexeclear line extends the brand to acne-prone skin. It includes a foaming gel against blemishes, a hydrating and soothing cleanser, a mattifying fluid with SPF 50+ sun protection, and a repairing moisturiser. On its German homepage, the brand introduces Dexeclear with the claim that it cleanses and helps reduce spots.

No third-party certifications are documented for the range.

Science & innovation

Clinical testing is central to how Dexeryl presents itself. The most detailed study the brand describes involved 335 children aged two to six with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis, followed over 12 weeks. Children were divided into a group using Dexeryl twice a day, a group using a reference cream and a group with no emollient. According to the brand, parents reported 77.5 percent less dry skin after 12 weeks, and half as many children in the Dexeryl group used corticosteroid creams [7]. The brand cites this work as Tiplica and colleagues, published in JEADV in 2018 and in Pediatric Dermatology in 2017.

The brand reports smaller studies for its other products. It says a test of the cleansing oil in 43 people with atopic dermatitis showed an 88.1 percent reduction in dryness after three weeks, and that users of the shower cream reported 83 percent less itching, citing a 2020 paper by Favrel and colleagues in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

The overall size of this evidence base is stated differently by the brand and its owner. Dexeryl's own site says the emollient cream's efficacy has been shown in nine clinical studies involving 1,356 patients [2]. The Pierre Fabre page for the range gives the same patient count but refers to ten clinical studies [9].

A similar difference in scope appears in the brand's market-position claims. The Dexeryl site describes the range simply as "#1 in Europe" [2]. The Pierre Fabre page is more specific, describing the emollient cream as number one in beauty products for family use in European pharmacy channels [9]. Neither claim is accompanied by independent verification.

Current status

Dexeryl is an active brand. Its websites in German, English and other languages carried a 2026 copyright notice, and the international site promoted a new moisturising shower gel while the German site featured the newly launched Dexeclear line [8]. The brand states that the range is sold on five continents.
