Summary

Overview

Donna Karan/DKNY Fragrance is the perfume and beauty arm of the New York fashion house founded by designer Donna Karan and her husband Stephan Weiss. The fragrance business spans two related lines: Donna Karan Beauty, tied to the main Donna Karan label, and DKNY, tied to the younger DKNY diffusion line. The trademarks behind both have been owned by G-III Apparel Group since 2016 [5], and since 1 July 2022 the fragrances have been produced under a worldwide license held by Inter Parfums [8].

Sources differ on when the house began. The English-language Wikipedia entry records a founding year of 1984 for the Donna Karan/DKNY house [5]; the brand's own site dates the start to 1989, the year the DKNY diffusion line was introduced [2]. The 1984 date refers to the parent fashion company, while 1989 marks the launch of the DKNY label specifically. Either way, the perfumes came later: the Donna Karan Beauty collection, which specialises in fragrance, launched in 1992.

Origin & founders

The house grew out of Donna Karan's own wardrobe needs. According to the company, the DKNY line was "founded on a pair of jeans and the speed of sport," conceived as something "practical and contemporary." Karan has described the original impulse as less about herself than about the city: "It may have started with me wanting a pair of jeans, but the truth is I never wanted it to be about me. I wanted it to be about New York." The designer, born Donna Ivy Faske in 1948 in New York City, showed her first women's collection in 1985.

DKNY arrived in 1989 as a younger, more affordable diffusion line running alongside the existing Donna Karan New York label. Fragrance followed in 1992, when the first perfume, Donna Karan New York, was introduced. These earliest scents were produced in-house and, by one perfume-industry account, "lost considerable money for the brand" [7].

History & milestones

The fragrance catalogue took shape across the 1990s and 2000s. Cashmere Mist appeared in 1994, beginning life as a scent for body products before becoming a standalone perfume [7]. The Be Delicious line launched in 2004 with its distinctive green-apple bottle and grew into a wide franchise of variants over the following years. Cashmere Mist likewise expanded into multiple editions, among them Liquid Nude (2010), Pearl Essence (2012) and Gold Essence (2013).

Fragrance production has passed through several hands. From 1997 until 2021 the perfumes were made under a licensing arrangement with Estée Lauder [7]. In 2021 that arrangement changed: G-III Apparel Group and Inter Parfums announced a long-term global licensing agreement, and Inter Parfums became the exclusive worldwide licensee for the Donna Karan and DKNY fragrance brands as of 1 July 2022 [8]. The earlier Estée Lauder license is now historical.

Ownership

The corporate history runs separately from the fragrance licensing. The Donna Karan company became publicly traded in 1996 and was acquired by LVMH in 2001. In 2016, G-III Apparel Group purchased the Donna Karan and DKNY trademarks from LVMH for 650 million US dollars [5], and G-III remains the brand owner. After Donna Karan stepped back from her namesake company in 2015 to focus on her Urban Zen lifestyle brand, established in 2007 [6], LVMH shelved the flagship Donna Karan International line in 2016 and concentrated on expanding DKNY. Inter Parfums holds only the fragrance license, not the brand itself.

Philosophy & positioning

The brand's identity is built around New York City. Since its 1989 start, DKNY has presented itself as "synonymous with New York—inspired by the energy and attitude of the city," drawing on what the company calls Donna Karan's principle of "designing for the woman who never knew where the day would take her." The stated aim is to "reimagine and reinvent" with New York "serving as both muse and mentor," and the brand sums up its outlook in the line "we embrace life and empower all." The fragrances sit at the prestige end of the market, with the DKNY 24/7 and Be Delicious lines anchoring the current range.

Products & innovation

Two perfumes dominate the brand's fragrance story. DKNY Be Delicious, the green-apple scent launched in 2004, was described in the 2021 licensing announcement as a "global blockbuster" franchise, while Donna Karan Cashmere Mist was cited as having "consistently ranked as a Top 25 fragrance in the United States" [8]. Cashmere Mist is known for a soft, powdery profile built on Moroccan jasmine, lily of the valley, sandalwood and musk. The current line continues with DKNY 24/7, alongside ongoing Be Delicious releases.

Recognition

Public recognition for the fragrances comes mainly through trade channels rather than independent awards. In the 2021 licensing announcement, Inter Parfums chairman and chief executive Jean Madar said the brands carried "a strong legacy following" and included scents recently named "Best Fragrance of All Time" and "Greatest Fragrance of All Time" [8]. On the fashion side, the brand named Hailey Bieber as the face of its Summer 2026 campaign.

Controversies

In 2013, DKNY was involved in a photography copyright dispute. The company acknowledged that it had used photographs by New York street photographer Brandon Stanton in a store window without permission; following public criticism, it apologised and donated 25,000 US dollars to the YMCA [5].

Current status

The brand is active. Its website operates as a working storefront carrying the current fragrance range, and a 2026 fashion campaign confirms continued activity [1]. The Donna Karan and DKNY trademarks remain owned by G-III Apparel Group, with fragrances produced under Inter Parfums' worldwide license since July 2022. Philanthropy is directed at New York City causes rather than environmental programmes, with the company supporting organisations including City Harvest, Women in Need and the Hetrick-Martin Institute [4].
