Summary

Overview

Dovo is a German manufacturer of straight razors and grooming tools based in Solingen. The company was founded in 1906 and trades today as DOVO Stahlwaren GmbH [1]. It makes open (straight) razors, safety razors, shaving accessories, scissors and manicure instruments, and markets them around the craft of traditional wet shaving. The brand remains an active, going concern, operating a multi-language online shop for Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The name "Dovo" comes from its two founders: it joins the first two letters of their surnames, Dorp and Voos [5]. More than a century later the company still presents itself as a maker of hand-finished steel goods, using the tagline "Pioneer since 1906" [2].

Origin & founders

Dovo was established in 1906 in Wald, a municipality near Solingen, in western Germany [1]. The brand site names the founders by their surnames, Dorp and Voos, while editorial histories give their full names as Carl Dorp and Carl Arthur Voos [5][7]. In its earliest form, according to the company, Dovo was "a pure razor factory with forge and hollow grinding" — a workshop devoted to forging and finishing straight razors rather than a broad cutlery business.

The choice of Solingen was significant. The city has been associated with blade-making since the Middle Ages and is sometimes called the "City of Blades." In 1938, German law formalised the reputation by protecting the "Solingen" designation: to carry the name, a product's materials had to originate from the area and the item had to be manufactured there [6].

History & milestones

After founding, leadership passed to Fritz Bracht shortly before the Second World War. According to the company, he broadened the catalogue beyond razors into hair scissors — a move that editorial accounts link to competition from the emerging electric shaver [7]. Later figures shaped the firm's technical side, including Ernst Kirschbaum, who joined in 1953, and a technician named Mertens, who joined in 1951 and advanced scissor production.

From the 1950s onward, Dovo grew partly by absorbing other Solingen blade and razor names. The company records acquisitions of Tennis (1952), Bismarck and Ankerflagge (1957), Teufelskerle pocket knives (1968), Kronpunkt razors (1969), Fontana straight razors (1970), and Weltkrone together with Heups & Hermes (1973) [1]. In 1996 it acquired the safety-razor brand Merkur [5], which remains one of the better-known names in double-edge wet shaving.

More recently, the managing partners Markus Kirschbaum and Ulrich Wiethoff are credited by the company with modernising razor production from 2013 onward.

Philosophy & positioning

Dovo frames its razors as more than tools. On its homepage the company describes a genuine Dovo razor as "a living piece of unique shaving culture" and "a sign of personality," positioning ownership as part of a deliberate ritual rather than a disposable purchase [2]. It summarises its values as "perfection, quality and craftsmanship," tied explicitly to the claims "Made in Germany and Made in Solingen."

That positioning sits at the premium end of the grooming market and is aimed, in the words of the barber-supply retailer Oz Barber, at "one of the most recognized names in wet shaving, specializing in grooming products for both men and women" [7].

Products & innovation

The core of the range is the open, or straight, razor — the folding blade traditionally used for a close shave with a leather strop. The straight-razor specialist guide Mister Shaver describes Dovo as "the world market leader" in this category and notes that its blades ship ready to shave, each one hand-ground, polished and individually inspected before leaving the workshop [6]. Blade widths run from roughly 4/8 to 8/8 of an inch, in grinds ranging from hollow to wedge.

Beyond straight razors, the line includes safety razors, the Shavette interchangeable-blade razors (among them the Shavette Titan), and a broad set of shaving supplies — strops, replacement blades, brushes, soap bowls and stands. The grooming range adds scissors, combs and beard-care items, along with manicure and pedicure instruments such as nail clippers, nail files and the Dovo Klipette [3]. Editorial sources note that the steel tools are sometimes finished with precious materials including gold and silver.

Recognition

Dovo has been the subject of dedicated brand-history and buyer's-guide coverage in wet-shaving media. Mister Shaver presents it as the world market leader in straight razors and praises the consistency of its hand-finished blades, while Oz Barber documents the company's history and its standing among recognised wet-shaving names. The packet records no formal awards.

Current status

Dovo is an active, independent manufacturer. The legal entity DOVO Stahlwaren GmbH is registered at Norbertstr. 3 in Solingen [4], and the company runs a current e-commerce shop with live product listings for Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside active Instagram and YouTube channels. With production reported as modernised under its present managing partners from 2013, the brand continues to operate as a going concern from its original Solingen base.
