Overview
DR. EMI ARPA is a German skincare brand created by the Berlin dermatologist Dr. med. Emi Arpa and run from Berlin by Dr. Emi Arpa Skin GmbH [4]. On its own website the line appears as DR. EMI ARPA SKIN or DR. EMI ARPA Skincare. Its formulas are built around ferments, a group of pre- and postbiotic ingredients that the founder began researching while treating wounds at a university hospital in Hamburg.
The brand grew out of a larger "Dr. Emi" business that also includes Arpa's dermatology practice in Berlin and a large following on social media, where she is known as an "Instagram dermatologist". The range covers cleansers, toners, serums, moisturisers, eye and lip care, sun protection and a small make-up line. In September 2026 it was still adding products and new points of sale.
Origin & founders
Emi Arpa trained as a dermatologist in hospital medicine. In a 2024 interview with the Austrian women's magazine MADONNA she described rotating through every ward during her specialist training, from the skin-cancer unit to the emergency department. She also said that the rigid hierarchies of clinic life did not satisfy her. She and her husband, Sebastian Dahlem, a former management consultant who had specialised in hospitals, shared a plan to open a practice together, with her as the physician and him on the business side [11].
According to MADONNA, the couple then built the "Dr. Emi" brand together. It combines the Berlin practice with the skincare line, while Dahlem handles the strategic direction of the company. Arpa described the division of labour in the same interview: Dahlem looks after the entire business side while she treats patients. The magazine gave her age as 34 at the time.
The idea behind the products goes back to Arpa's hospital years. The company says that while she worked in the outpatient wound clinic at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, she looked for treatments that could complement conventional wound care. In 2017 she first came across ferments as a possible active ingredient and began reading the research on their effect on skin health [5]. Ferments later became the common thread running through the whole line.
Austrian press coverage in 2026 refers to Arpa as the brand's founder ("Gründerin") [12]. The company's own pages do not use the word "founder" for either partner; they name Arpa and Dahlem as its two managing directors.
History & milestones
The German beauty blog BEAUTYPUNK covered the market launch of the skincare line in October 2023, writing that it followed more than two years of research and product development [10]. The first products it described were The Ten out of Ten gel cleanser, the Essential Essence toner and the Barrier Boost cream.
By the time of the MADONNA interview a year later, Arpa had half a million followers on Instagram. She told the magazine that one of her short videos had recently reached 18 million views. The same article reported that the brand's online shop sold out repeatedly because of demand [11].
The company later opened the DR. EMI Skin Suite inside the Breuninger department store in Munich, where it offers skin treatments that it describes as both dermatologically based and deeply relaxing [6]. The opening year is not stated. In September 2026 the range became available through Douglas in Austria, both online and at the chain's House of Beauty on Kärntner Straße in Vienna, where Arpa appeared in person for the launch.
Ownership
The brand belongs to Dr. Emi Arpa Skin GmbH, a private limited company registered at the Berlin Local Court and based at Fasanenstraße in Berlin. Its managing directors are Dr. med. Emi Arpa and Sebastian Dahlem [4]. The company is independent: no outside parent company, investor or corporate group is documented, and no acquisitions are documented.
Philosophy & positioning
The company sums up its approach as "honest skincare that works and feels good". It says it develops scientifically based formulas intended to support long-term skin health, and it calls transparency its mission in what it describes as an often opaque beauty industry [2]. Its about page is organised under three headings: science, skin health and transparency. The site also links to an ingredient library that, according to the brand, collects the studies behind each active ingredient.
Arpa's own framing puts the skin barrier at the centre. In launch material quoted by BEAUTYPUNK, she called an intact barrier the basis of healthy skin and said she had made it her life's work to make awareness of skin health accessible to everyone. The homepage uses the short descriptor "Innovative & vegan skincare".
The website organises the range into a six-step routine: cleanse, exfoliate, prepare, treat, moisturise and defence, the last meaning sun protection. Products are also grouped by skin concern, such as redness, blemishes, pigmentation, dullness and dry or oily skin.
Products & innovation
### Fermented formulations
Ferments are the brand's defining ingredient. The company states that it uses ferments from four bacterial species: Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus pentosus, Lactococcus lactis and Bacillus subtilis. On ingredient lists these appear as Bifida Ferment Lysate, Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, Lactococcus Ferment Lysate and Bacillus Ferment.
In the brand's terms, these are postbiotics: substances produced by microbes that have been deliberately inactivated. The formulas pair them with prebiotics, ingredients meant to feed the skin's own population of microbes. The brand names these as alpha-glucan oligosaccharides and inulin. DR. EMI ARPA says that fermentation breaks ingredients into smaller molecules that the skin can take up more easily, and it credits its postbiotics with strengthening the skin barrier and reducing visible redness and irritation. No clinical study of the finished products is cited alongside these claims.
Beyond ferments, the products use ceramides, panthenol, antioxidants and retinal.
### The range
The Ten out of Ten Gentle Gel Cleanser was one of the first products. At launch it was described as a mild gel cleanser with pre- and postbiotics, 13 amino acids, ceramides, fatty acids similar to those found in skin, and allantoin, combined with gentle sugar-based cleansing agents. The Essential Essence toner was presented at the same time with 11 per cent pre- and postbiotics [10].
Barrier Boost, sold as the CPA Barrier Cream, is a moisturiser for dry and stressed skin, and a richer version also exists. Other products named in press coverage include the vitamin C serum Serious C Complex, the retinal serums Absolute A and Absolute A+, the exfoliating mask Active Acids, the moisturising mask Overnight Oats, the eye-care product Daily Depuff and the ceramide lip balm Better Balm. The line also includes SPF 30 and SPF 50 fluids, an SPF 30 powder, a depuffing device for the eye area, travel sizes and refills.
Alongside skincare, a small make-up line called Skin First Makeup includes Glazed Skin Glow Drops, lip tints, the liquid bronzer Tan Touch and the lip gloss Bare Bliss [9].
### Ethical claims and manufacturing
The company says its products are vegan, PETA-certified and "Made in Germany", and that its packaging materials come only from Germany and Italy [2]. The PETA certification is the brand's own claim. According to Austrian press reports, the products are made in the company's own laboratory in Germany [12]. In its launch material the brand also presented fermentation itself as a low-impact process, saying that it runs under mild production conditions and that fermented ingredients are biodegradable. No quantified environmental targets have been published.
Recognition
No industry awards are documented. The brand has received coverage mainly in German-language media. BEAUTYPUNK reported on its launch in 2023. MADONNA interviewed Arpa in 2024 after its MADONNA Beauty Day event, and the interviewer noted that Instagram Germany had cited her as a best-practice example of fast, organic growth. The Austrian daily oe24 reported on the Douglas launch in Vienna in 2026, which was marked with a press lunch.
Current status
DR. EMI ARPA is active. In mid-September 2026 it launched with Douglas in Austria [12]. At the end of that month its website was presenting new products, including the Glazed Skin Glow Drops. The brand runs its own webshop with a store finder, a loyalty programme and a skin-analysis service, and the Munich Skin Suite offers treatments in person. It keeps an official presence on Instagram and TikTok under the handle dr.emiskin.
