Summary

Overview

Dr. Grandel is a German professional skincare brand based in Augsburg, founded in 1947 by the chemist and nutritionist Dr. Felix Grandel [1]. It makes highly concentrated active-ingredient cosmetics — what the company calls Wirkstoffkosmetik — developed and produced in-house and sold chiefly through beauty institutes, pharmacies and health-food stores rather than mass-market retail. The brand is best known for its single-active concentrate ampoules, a format it has built much of its reputation around in the professional beauty market.

The company remains active and family-run, now in its third generation. It is the flagship skincare line of GRANDEL – The Beautyness Company, the parent group that took that name in 2022 to mark its 75th anniversary [2].

Origin & founders

The brand's roots lie in the Pfladermühle, a thousand-year-old gristmill in Augsburg that Felix Grandel inherited in 1936 [1]. A chemist and nutritional scientist, Grandel was drawn less to the milling itself than to its by-products — wheat germ and bran — and began studying how they might be preserved and used in human nutrition.

That research extended to the skin. Grandel investigated the effects of wheat germ oil and developed Epigran, a wheat germ oil serum with firming properties, which the brand says it launched in 1947 and kept in use for decades afterward. In the same year he formally established the business as Keimdiät GmbH at the mill site — a name that, as the company notes, translates roughly as "diet of wheat germ" [3]. Wheat germ oil (Weizenkeimöl) remains the house hero ingredient.

Editorial and distributor sources sometimes date the brand "back to 1936," referring to the mill inheritance rather than the company's formal founding [4]. One US distributor describes it as an "ampoule pioneer since 1957," a figure that points to its later specialization in ampoules rather than its origin; the brand's own German and international sites consistently give 1947 as the founding year [5].

History & milestones

Leadership has passed down the Grandel family across three generations. In 1985, Michael Grandel, Felix's son and an economics graduate, took over management of the company [1]. In 2019, the third generation assumed control: Dr. Gabriel Duttler, Michael's nephew, and Ariane Grandel, his daughter, became co-leaders [2].

In 2022, marking 75 years since the 1947 founding, the parent company rebranded as GRANDEL – The Beautyness Company and adopted a stylized flower logo, while restating its long-standing motto that it thinks "not in decades, but in generations" [2].

Ownership

Dr. Grandel is the principal skincare brand within GRANDEL – The Beautyness Company, a privately held, family-owned group headquartered in Augsburg. Alongside Dr. Grandel, the group's portfolio includes the skincare line PHYRIS, the makeup brand ARABESQUE, and a nutritional-supplement line marketed as DR. GRANDEL Health. According to the company, its brands are exported to more than 50 countries.

Philosophy & positioning

Dr. Grandel positions itself as a maker of "high-quality active-ingredient cosmetics from Germany," combining professional standards and scientific methods with what it describes as "optimized nature, made in Germany." The brand's products are intended for professional beauty services — institutes, pharmacies and health-food stores — rather than general retail, and the company states it supplies thousands of professional beauty institutes internationally. Its tagline is "we know your skin."

The product range is organized into more than a dozen lines, including Hydro Active, Timeless, High Excellence, Pro Collagen, Vitamin Infusion, Beautygen and Smart Nature, segmented by age group and skin concern. Hero ingredients across the range include wheat germ oil, hyaluronic acid, retinol, niacinamide, collagen and snow algae.

Products & innovation

The ampoule is Dr. Grandel's signature format. Each concentrate typically carries a single pure active ingredient, and the editorial outlet Care to Beauty describes the brand as having earned its reputation by developing and manufacturing active-concentrate ampoules for the professional market [4]. Specific examples cited by that outlet include the Beauty Flash Ampoule, which mattifies the complexion and creates a soft-focus effect using a proprietary ingredient the brand calls Matysoft, and an SOS Ampoule built around sugar molecules.

Development and production take place in-house in Augsburg, where the company maintains its own research laboratories. Among the technologies the brand highlights are Matysoft, a Micro-Hyaluron complex, and a digital skin-analysis tool offered to help match products to skin type and condition. The company says its products undergo independent third-party testing for compatibility and efficacy.

Sustainability

Sustainability at Dr. Grandel is handled at the parent-company level, where production is shared across brands. Since January 2021, the Augsburg site has run on 100% hydropower drawn from regional plants on the Lech, Wertach and Iller rivers, which the company says cuts its carbon emissions by 47% [6]. An on-site hydroelectric installation at the historic mill has operated since 1994 and supplies a substantial share of the headquarters' daily energy needs. The company states a target of recycling 100% of its waste, and reports a rainforest-protection partnership with the conservation organization OroVerde spanning more than a decade.

Recognition

Dr. Grandel and its parent group have received a number of German and international industry awards in recent years. Packaging for the Pop Art Ampullen line won a German Packaging Award in 2022 and a Packaging Worldstar from the World Packaging Organisation in 2023. The Hyaluron Advanced+ Ampulle was recognized in the 2024 Tina Ageless Beauty Award, and the company collected six awards at the 2020 BEAUTY FORUM Stars Award. More recent recognition has gone to the Smart Nature line, including a 2025 GRAZIA Beauty Award and a 2026 SPA Award in the "Organic & Clean" category.

Current status

The brand is active. Its most recent recorded milestone is a SPA Award for the Smart Nature Day Serum in March 2026 [6]. It continues to launch products, maintains its website and distribution network, and remains a third-generation, family-run business operating across multiple regions.
