Overview
Dr. Hauschka is a German natural cosmetics brand founded in 1967 and based in Bad Boll/Eckwälden, in Baden-Württemberg. It is the cosmetics arm of WALA Heilmittel GmbH, a holistic pharmaceutical company, and grew out of WALA's anthroposophical, alcohol-free method of extracting plants. The brand is built on the idea that medicinal plants can both heal and beautify, and it has positioned itself as a natural-cosmetics pioneer since the 1960s.
The brand remains fully active. It sells skincare, makeup and body care internationally, including across the Nordics, the UK and the United States, and continues to launch products and win industry awards into the 2020s.
Origin and founders
The brand began with a dissatisfied customer. Elisabeth Sigmund (1914–2013), an esthetician trained between Vienna and Stockholm, disliked the synthetic creams sold at the time. "The creams available for purchase displeased me; I wanted to formulate my own," she later recalled [3]. In the early 1960s she partnered with the Viennese chemist Rudolf Hauschka (1891–1969), who had founded WALA and whose work was shaped by the anthroposophy of Rudolf Steiner [3][10].
The two collaborated for roughly two years before launching "Dr. Hauschka Heilende Kosmetik nach Elisabeth Sigmund" in 1967; the first product was a facial oil made with essential oils. Sources differ slightly on when the partnership began: the company's own history dates their meeting to 1962 [3], while a third-party profile says Hauschka invited Sigmund to WALA in 1965 [12]. Both agree the line launched in 1967. Sigmund described the venture in rebellious terms, saying the pair "felt like rebels" developing such unconventional cosmetics.
History and milestones
The parent company predates the cosmetics line by decades, though its exact founding date is reported two ways. Wikipedia and WALA's own company page give 1935, when WALA Heilmittel was established and opened branches in Vienna and London [10]. The brand's heritage page instead dates 1929 to Rudolf Hauschka's development of the alcohol-free, water-based extraction method, treating the later date as the launch of WALA's first medicinal products [3]. The cosmetics line itself is dated to 1967 consistently across all sources.
During the Nazi era the company was banned, and Hauschka was imprisoned. In 1950 the firm relocated permanently to Bad Boll/Eckwälden, where it remains. The brand opened its first training program for natural estheticians in 1971 and later established a Dr. Hauschka Academy for product and facial-treatment training. Accounts of the makeup expansion vary: the company's timeline records a complete makeup line introduced in 1999, while Wikipedia places the move into cosmetics in 2017 [10]. A line of medical-care products, Dr. Hauschka Med, was added in 2009.
Ownership
Dr. Hauschka is owned by WALA Heilmittel GmbH, which operates as two divisions: WALA Arzneimittel for pharmaceuticals and Dr. Hauschka Kosmetik for cosmetics [10]. The company employs roughly 1,000 people and, according to its heritage page, is structured as a responsibility-owned enterprise ("Verantwortungseigentum"), directing profits to the WALA Foundation rather than to private shareholders [3]. Martina Joseph is listed as chief executive as of 2019. There is no acquisition history; the brand has remained within WALA since its founding.
Philosophy and positioning
The brand's outlook is explicitly anthroposophical, drawing on Steiner's ideas, and rests on the principle that health and beauty are inseparable — summed up in the slogan "Was gesund macht, macht auch schön" ("what makes you healthy also makes you beautiful"). It describes its approach as working "in the rhythm of nature," using medicinal-plant extracts and biodynamic ingredients in place of synthetic chemistry. Its tagline, "Natur. Anders. Wirksam." ("Nature. Different. Effective."), accompanies the claim of "100% certified, effective natural cosmetics. Different since 1967."
That positioning extends to what the company leaves out. According to the brand, its formulas contain "0% mineral oils, silicones, PEG and synthetic preservatives," and glycerin and fats are exclusively plant-derived. The company also notes that it relies on loyal customers rather than heavy advertising, which it says frees resources for cultivation partnerships.
Products and innovation
The brand spans face care, body care and makeup, with hero ingredients including rose, quince, melissa, witch hazel, calendula and neem. Its best-known product is the Rose Day Cream (Rosen Tagescreme); other long-standing items include the facial toner, the Lippengold lip balm, a night serum and a cleansing balm. Across roughly 500 natural raw materials, the company says it formulates each product individually rather than from standard templates.
The signature technical innovation is the "rhythmic process" (Rhythmisches Verfahren), Rudolf Hauschka's alcohol-free extraction method, which the company describes as working through alternating cycles of light and dark, warmth and cold, and movement and rest to stabilise plant extracts without synthetic preservatives. Manufacturing in Eckwälden retains many manual steps: the facial toner undergoes a 21-day maturation with daily hand-stirring, and the company reports hand-picking around seven tons of calendula a year.
On ingredients and ethics, the brand states it has conducted no animal testing since its 1967 founding, and its products are listed on PETA's register of cosmetics without animal testing [4]. The full product line carries NATRUE certification for natural and organic cosmetics, which the company says is verified by independent testing institutes before it is granted [5].
Sustainability
Sourcing is central to the brand's identity. The company says more than 90% of its plant-based raw materials come from organic cultivation and around 70% of its fresh plants are sourced regionally, with a stated goal of shifting more supply to Demeter-certified biodynamic farming. It maintains its own biodynamic medicinal-herb garden and Demeter farm.
Dr. Hauschka also describes long-term cultivation partnerships built on fair wages and interest-free credit. Examples it cites include a shea-butter partnership in Burkina Faso spanning two decades and supporting more than 4,000 women, damask-rose projects in Afghanistan and Iran — the Afghan project framed as an alternative to the opium trade, supported by German World Hunger Aid — and avocado and macadamia sourcing in Kenya.
Recognition
The brand has been recognised across natural-cosmetics and beauty awards in Germany, the UK, Switzerland and elsewhere. Recent honours include the cleansing balm named best natural-cosmetics product at Switzerland's Annabelle Prix de Beauté in 2023, a best natural cosmetics brand award at the UK's Hip and Healthy Beauty Awards in 2022, and earlier wins for products such as the night serum at the 2016 CEW Beauty Awards [9]. German consumer-testing body Öko-Test has repeatedly rated individual products "sehr gut" (very good).
In the press, the Rose Day Cream has been profiled as a cult favourite. Woman & Home reported that Jennifer Lopez bought the cream from Whole Foods for around a decade to help prevent fine lines, and noted it had drawn more than 1,000 Amazon reviews [11]. Wikipedia additionally lists Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Nikki Reed among personalities associated with the brand.
Controversies
Third-party reviewers have questioned aspects of the brand's claims. The Dermatology Review notes that its efficacy positioning rests on anthroposophic philosophy rather than peer-reviewed clinical science, and points out that some products marketed for sensitive skin contain denatured alcohol and essential-oil fragrance, which the review says can dry or irritate skin — singling out denatured alcohol as a high-concentration ingredient in the facial toner [12].
Current status
Dr. Hauschka is a mature, fully operational brand. Its e-commerce site is active with current product lines, it maintains a network of estheticians, spas and stockists, and it has continued to receive awards into the 2020s. It is sold internationally and remains a wholly owned cosmetics division of WALA Heilmittel GmbH.
