Summary

Overview

Dr. Organic is a British personal-care brand based in Swansea, Wales, that makes certified organic skincare, body care, haircare and dental products built around plant-based ingredients. It was founded in 2008 by entrepreneurs Steve Quinn and Fred Whitcomb, and reached UK shoppers first through an exclusive listing in the Holland & Barrett health-food chain. The brand remains active: it announced B Corp certification in March 2026 [3] and opened its first consumer pop-up in London in late 2025 [14].

The company sits within a portfolio owned since 2021 by the Belgian investment group Damier Group [15]. Its catalogue is organised largely by hero botanical — Aloe Vera, Tea Tree, Manuka Honey, Moroccan Argan Oil, Rose Otto and others — and sits at an accessible, drugstore price point rather than a premium one.

Origin and founders

Dr. Organic was started by Steve Quinn and Fred Whitcomb, two Welsh health-food and pharma entrepreneurs. The pair had previously built the Cardiff-based supplements and cosmetics company Optima, which they sold to the William Ransom Group in 2005 for £23 million before launching Dr. Organic [13]. The new venture was headquartered in Swansea, where the company still develops products and manages its intellectual property in-house while outsourcing manufacturing.

Most corporate records place the founding in 2008 [11], though a 2010 Welsh Government account noted the company had "started trading about a year before," implying 2009 [13] — a date that more likely reflects the consumer launch than the incorporation. From the start the brand was tied to Holland & Barrett, then owned by the American group NBTY, which gave it exclusive UK distribution.

One source of confusion is geographic: a Portuguese-language Wikipedia stub describes Dr. Organic as a North American company [10], but every primary record — Companies House filings, the brand's own registered address, the 2015 acquisition release and Welsh Government coverage — confirms the company is British and based in Swansea.

History and milestones

The brand expanded quickly beyond the UK. In 2010 it signed a five-year, £9 million distribution agreement for the Middle East [13], and a television-fronted campaign featuring presenter Gethin Jones supported the Holland & Barrett rollout. In 2013 the range reached the United States, sold there under the name Organic Doctor through NBTY's Vitamin World stores.

In 2015 NBTY — Holland & Barrett's parent — acquired Dr. Organic outright for a reported £55 million [12]. NBTY was later renamed The Bountiful Company and passed into the ownership of the private-equity firms KKR and The Carlyle Group. In August 2021 the brand changed hands again when Damier Group bought it from The Bountiful Company [15][16].

A 2024 filing placed the holding company Dr. Organic Group Ltd into a Member's Voluntary Liquidation [17]; this is a solvent reorganisation of the corporate structure under Damier's ownership rather than an insolvency, and the operating brand has continued to trade.

Ownership

Dr. Organic is owned by Damier Group, a Belgian investment vehicle led by pharmaceutical entrepreneur Yvan Vindevogel, which acquired the company in August 2021. Within that portfolio Dr. Organic sits alongside related brands developed under the original Dr. Organic Group, including the wellness range Optima, the natural oral-care line AloeDent and the Manuka honey brand Pure Gold.

Philosophy and positioning

The company's stated approach is summed up in the line "we trust nature": it says it ethically sources pure organic plant extracts and blends them "with science to help you look and feel your best — without costing the earth." Dr. Organic positions its products as clean formulations and, according to the brand, makes them without parabens, SLS, synthetic colours, petrochemicals and several other ingredients it chooses to exclude. Its products are certified cruelty-free by PETA, described as vegetarian with most being vegan, and the company holds Soil Association COSMOS Organic certification, which it claims makes it the UK's largest certified-organic cosmetics brand.

Products and innovation

The range is built around named botanical ingredients, with collections including Aloe Vera, Tea Tree, Manuka Honey, Moroccan Argan Oil, Rose Otto, Pro Collagen, Vitamin E and Snail Gel. Recurring products include an Aloe Vera Gel, an Activated Charcoal Toothpaste, a Tea Tree Nail Solution, a Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and a Manuka Honey Body Butter. The catalogue spans face, body, hair and dental care alongside a Mum & Baby line and pure oils.

In March 2026 the brand introduced a Skin Calm Probiotic range aimed at skin prone to redness, irritation and dryness, which became the centrepiece of its first physical retail event [14].

Sustainability

Dr. Organic frames sustainability as central to its identity, and used its 2026 B Corp certification to set out specific figures: solar panels generating enough energy to power the equivalent of 160 homes and offsetting 127 tonnes of carbon a year, 41 tonnes of ocean-bound plastic prevented through recycled packaging, more than 36,800 trees planted with the partners Ecologi and Lignaverda, and over 21,000 products donated to charity in 2024 [3]. The company also keeps beehives at its Swansea site. Announcing the certification, it described the move as proof that "our values are authentic and backed by action," framing B Corp status as a guard against greenwashing.

Recognition

The brand drew the most editorial attention in the early 2010s. It collected three Healthy Magazine Readers' Choice awards in 2010 [13], and over 2011 and 2012 was recognised across a run of natural-beauty awards including the Pure Beauty Awards, the Cosmopolitan Beauty Awards, the Natural Health Beauty Awards, the Green Parent awards and The Green Beauty Bible. Its Organic Manuka Hand and Nail Cream was singled out as a top-rated product by The Green Beauty Bible.

Current status

Dr. Organic is an active brand. It operates a direct-to-consumer site and continues to be distributed through Holland & Barrett, with a presence extending to the Nordics, the Middle East and the United States. Its most recent public milestones are the launch of the Skin Calm Probiotic range and a debut London pop-up, "The Calm Club," in October 2025, followed by the B Corp certification announced on 26 March 2026.
