Overview
Dr. Pandalis is a German maker of plant-based health and care products based in Glandorf, Lower Saxony. Run by the Greek-born scientist Dr. Georgios Pandalis, the company dates its research into what it calls "urheimisch" (native) plants to 1988 [3]. Its range covers medicines, medical devices, food supplements, teas and a smaller line of natural cosmetics, including Ladania face care and Mycea nail oil, and it is sold mainly through pharmacies.
The company is best known for Cystus, its family of products made from Cistus incanus, a Mediterranean rockrose. Dr. Pandalis holds a series of European patents on plant extracts, runs a charitable foundation devoted to traditional European plants, and has been involved in a court dispute over how its Cistus products should be classified under German law. The business remains independent and family-run.
Origin & founders
The company grew out of the ideas of Georgios Pandalis, a scientist born in Greece who settled in Germany. Writing on the company's website, he describes himself as "a critical scientist" convinced that his philosophy offers a basis for lasting health. At the centre of that philosophy is a word he coined himself: urheimisch, which roughly translates as "native" or "indigenous since time immemorial".
Two dates mark the beginning of the story. Naturprodukte Dr. Pandalis states that it has been researching native plants since 1988 [3]. The German medical newspaper Ärzte Zeitung, in a June 2004 article marking ten years of the philosophy, dated its development by Pandalis to about a decade earlier, around 1994 [11]. The two accounts describe different milestones rather than competing founding dates: one refers to the start of the plant research, the other to the formulation of the guiding philosophy.
By 2004, according to the same Ärzte Zeitung report, Pandalis was selling medicines, food supplements, natural cosmetics and dietetic foods from his company in Glandorf, all built on this philosophy.
History & milestones
Much of the company's documented history follows its research interests. In September 2003 Georgios Pandalis set up the Dr. Pandalis Stiftung, a non-profit foundation based in Münster [9]. The local tax office recognised it as a charitable body for the promotion of science in October 2003. The foundation calls itself an academy for traditional European plants used in food and medicine, and its stated tasks include preserving the plant knowledge of earlier generations, educating the public, recultivating traditional useful and medicinal plants and naming a "Plant of Europe" each year. Prof. Dr. Richard Pott of the Institute of Geobotany at the University of Hannover is named as the first member of its board of trustees.
From 2006 onward the company began registering patents. The first European patent it lists, from 2006, covers a Cistus extract composition for preventing and treating common colds; others followed for influenza, viral and bacterial infections and dental erosion.
In 2009 the company's medicinal arm lost a court case in Cologne over the legal status of two of its Cistus products (see Controversies).
The most recent structural change came in 2025, when Dr. Pandalis Tiergesundheit, an animal-health business, was spun out of Naturprodukte Dr. Pandalis [3].
The company also publishes Urheimische Notizen, a quarterly bulletin that it uses to share research findings and comment on health and environmental topics.
Ownership
Dr. Pandalis is not part of a larger beauty or pharmaceutical group. The company describes itself as the Dr. Pandalis group of companies, made up of two firms linked by the native-plant philosophy [3]:
- Naturprodukte Dr. Pandalis GmbH & Co. KG, the original company, which develops food supplements, cosmetics and foods such as wild garlic fresh-leaf granules and activated fenugreek. - Dr. Pandalis Urheimische Medizin GmbH & Co. KG, described by the company as an offshoot of the first, which focuses mainly on medicines and medical devices, including Lefteria and the Cystus Pandalis lozenges.
According to the company's legal notice, Naturprodukte Dr. Pandalis is registered in Glandorf and managed by Dr. Georgios Pandalis and Nikos Pandalis [6]. Its commercial register entry moved from the district court of Bad Iburg to that of Osnabrück on 1 August 2005. No acquisitions by or of the company are documented.
Philosophy & positioning
Everything Dr. Pandalis sells is framed by what the company calls the "urheimisch principle". The company explains that Pandalis created the term to describe the way of life that people in a given culture have known for generations [5]. For Central Europeans, that means plants that either originate in Europe, such as wild garlic and nettle, or have been used successfully there for at least ten generations, such as potatoes, coffee, maize, pepper, bananas and sugar. Many of the plants it favours are, in the company's words, forgotten spices, vegetables and medicinal herbs.
The idea is not limited to Europe. In the 2004 Ärzte Zeitung article, Pandalis explained that what counts as native depends on the observer's own origins: rice and algae in Asia, maize in the Americas, grain in Europe. He argued that over thousands of years the body has adapted to digest the foods of its home region, which is why, in his view, traditional European food and medicine suit Europeans best.
The company's page on the principle carries the subtitle "...denn hier sind meine Wurzeln" ("...for here are my roots"). It ties personal health to the environment: Pandalis writes that individual wellbeing can never be separated from an intact, healthy environment, and that caring for the native landscape is a duty owed to future generations. Humility and respect for creation are the two values the company names as essential to lasting health. Its short mission statement reads: "We research and process indigenous plants."
Organic sourcing is a large part of this positioning. The company says it has been allowed to label its products "Bio" (organic) for many years, with organic control carried out by Prüfgesellschaft ökologischer Landbau in Karlsruhe (code DE-Öko-007) and by Physiologike in Greece (EL-BIO-02) [7]. It states that all raw materials for its medicines and medical devices come from controlled wild collection or organic farming and are free of genetic modification, and claims its standards are in some respects stricter than those of some well-known organic certifiers. No separate cosmetics certifications are documented.
Products & innovation
The product range is organised by plant rather than by beauty category, and cosmetics make up only a small part of it. Most of the catalogue consists of lozenges, capsules, granules, tablets and teas built around a few core plants.
Cystus (Cistus incanus). The rockrose is the company's main plant. The range includes lozenges, throat pastilles, a liquid extract, a children's syrup, teas and topical products such as an organic ointment and a cream. The company presents Cystus Pandalis as "the original" and describes it as the first and only medicine worldwide based on Cistus incanus [1]. It markets the newer Cystus 052 liquid extract for the care and protection of skin and mucous membranes.
Wild garlic, fenugreek and other plants. Wild garlic (Bärlauch) appears in capsules and fresh-leaf granules, sometimes combined with iron, magnesium or vitamin K1. Activated fenugreek is sold as capsules and tablets, recently also in an organic vegan capsule. Other lines include Sambufit organic elderberry tea, meadowsweet tea, Urbitter bitters for digestion, Salicornia tablets as a plant source of iodine, and Sidea B12, which the company describes as plant-bound vitamin B12.
Cosmetics and topical care. The beauty-relevant products are few. Ladania Bio Gesichtspflege is an organic face-care product that the company advertises with the line "smooths wrinkles"; no supporting study is cited for this claim. Mycea is a nail-care oil. Lefteria Bio Balsam, which combines cistus and rosemary, is a balm the company presents as providing warmth for the inner organs. The Cystus cream and ointment round out the topical offering.
Patents. The company lists a sequence of European patents on plant extracts [4]. They include a 2006 patent on a Cistus composition against common colds, with matching patents in Japan and Canada in 2007; a Cistus-based medicine against influenza; compositions from currant (Ribes) or oregano (Origanum) against viral and bacterial infections; a 2014 patent on preventing dental erosion; and a 2015 patent on couch grass (Elymus) as a source of vitamin B12. It also holds German utility models for compositions containing oregano and containing currant with meadowsweet.
Controversies
The best-documented dispute concerns how the law should treat two Cistus products. In February 2008 Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) ruled that Cystus052 Infektblocker tablets and Cystus052 gargle solution, both made from Cistus incanus extract, required approval as medicines. Dr. Pandalis Urheimische Medizin challenged the decision in court. In November 2009 the Cologne Administrative Court dismissed the suit as unfounded [12].
The court applied a rule for borderline cases: if a product meets both the definition of a medicine and that of a medical device, it is to be classed as a medicine under German drug law. Both products were therefore treated as medicines requiring approval rather than as medical devices. The company said it would examine whether an appeal was possible [12]. The dispute concerned medicinal products, not the cosmetics line.
Current status
Dr. Pandalis is active. Its German website carries recent news posts dated May, June and August 2026, including one in May 2026 on Cystus and Lyme disease that warns readers about charlatans [1]. Several products are marked as new, among them the Cystus 052 liquid extract, organic Cystus tea in tea bags and vegan fenugreek capsules. The company also runs an English-language version of its website.
The business remains under the management of Dr. Georgios Pandalis and Nikos Pandalis, with its base in Glandorf and its foundation in Münster.
