Summary

Overview

Dr. PawPaw is a British beauty brand founded in 2013 by the husband-and-wife team Johnny and Pauline Paterson, headquartered in Bromley, in Greater London [1]. It is built around pawpaw, the fruit of the papaya, which anchors a range of multipurpose balms, lip oils and, more recently, skincare. The company describes its products as natural, vegan and multitasking, and frames the brand around fun, kindness and transparency.

The brand remains active and family-run, with new product launches as recent as 2023 and a retail footprint that has grown from British pharmacies to listings in more than 20 countries.

Origin & founders

The brand began as a domestic remedy. Pauline Paterson, who was born in Australia and had previously worked in the hair industry, turned to pawpaw fruit to soothe the eczema of the couple's young daughter, Jasmine [6]. According to the company, the product started life "as a natural solution to soothe their young daughter's eczema" [1]. Pauline has linked the idea to her upbringing, recalling that "in Australia, mums used pawpaw fruit for everything" [6]. That household habit became the basis for the Original Balm, which the founders introduced in 2013 as a multipurpose clear balm.

Products & innovation

The signature product is the Dr.PAWPAW Original Balm, a clear multipurpose balm intended for lips, skin and hair. The brand's account of its formula lists pawpaw (papaya fruit), aloe vera, castor oil and olive oil [1]; some third-party retail descriptions instead present the balm as a "trio" of pawpaw, aloe vera oil and olive oil, omitting castor oil [8]. The range has since widened well beyond the original yellow-packaged balm to include tinted lip balms, a Tinted Lip Oil Trio, the Glimmer Glaze lip oil line and an Overnight Lip Mask. Different products have found their strongest markets in different regions: the Original Balm sells best in the United Kingdom, while a red balm leads in the Middle East and the overnight lip mask in the United States [6].

In 2023 the company expanded into dedicated skincare with a vegan range it has referred to as "YOUR gorgeous SKIN", alongside several new balms [6]. Multitasking is presented as central to the brand; as the company puts it, "multitasking is at the core of Dr.PAWPAW" [6]. The products are described as free of beeswax, fragrances, flavours and artificial colours [6].

Philosophy & positioning

Dr. PawPaw positions itself as multipurpose, natural and vegan, and sits at an accessible, drugstore price point. Its stated aim is to bring "fun, kindness, transparency and a touch of disruption to everyday beauty," summarised in the tagline "Powered by Nature. Driven by Kindness. Made to Make You Smile." The brand groups its values around kindness, inclusivity, philanthropy, transparency and an "eco-warrior" stance, and it is commonly associated with the clean-beauty movement.

Philanthropy is a recurring theme. The company says it donates a percentage of sales to charity each year and names Teenage Cancer Trust as its official charity partner, citing a six-year relationship that has raised £191,000 [3]. It also lists monthly support for Stand Up to Racism and Stonewall, and one-off support for organisations including Save the Children, Crisis, The Eve Appeal, Young Minds and Great Ormond Street Hospital. On packaging, the brand reports that proceeds from certain products fund care for young people with cancer.

The company also emphasises packaging and sourcing, stating that it uses post-consumer recycled plastics, cardboard that is 70% recycled, water-soluble inks and eco-friendly tape [1]. Products are described as cruelty-free.
