Summary

Overview

DUDU Osun (also written Dudu-Osun) is a Nigerian black soap made by the manufacturer Tropical Naturals Limited. It is a bar soap in the West African black-soap tradition, coloured dark by plant ash and built on palm kernel oil, shea butter and honey. The company presents it as its flagship product and the origin of its wider range, which also includes a liquid soap and shea butter.

Outside Africa, the soap is best known through its European distribution partner, the German company Spa Vivent, which has handled the brand in Europe since around 2010. The bar is made and packaged entirely in Nigeria, and for the European market it carries a natural-cosmetics certification. The brand is active.

Origin & founders

DUDU Osun comes out of Tropical Naturals Limited, a Nigerian maker of personal-care products. According to its own account, the company was established in 1995 by Abiola Ogunrinde, with the aim of taking African natural products to a global market [11]. Tropical Naturals says it began as a small-scale, manually operated plant and has grown over the years into a full-scale manufacturing facility.

An archived revision of a former English Wikipedia article on the soap fills in the corporate background slightly differently. It gives the same 1995 starting point, but says the business was first set up as Cosmos Chemicals Limited and only became fully operational under the Tropical Naturals name in 2007, when it turned its focus to natural beauty products [8].

In the company's telling, DUDU Osun Black Soap was introduced to share traditional African black soap with a wider audience, and it soon became popular for its natural ingredients, such as shea butter, honey and camwood, combined using traditional methods. No separate launch year for the soap itself is given by the manufacturer, its distributor or the archived Wikipedia text.

The link between Ogunrinde and the soap is also made by an outside source. In November 2018, the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle published a short video report on Ogunrinde's soap, made from local natural products such as shea butter and aloe vera, and described the "eco-soap" as popular in Nigeria and internationally [9]. The report's published summary does not name the product, but the former Wikipedia article cited it in its coverage of Dudu-Osun.

### Two sets of founding dates

Readers may come across two different starting points for the brand. Tropical Naturals dates its own founding to 1995 [11]. Spa Vivent's history page, by contrast, centres on 2009 and 2010, the years it first stocked the soap and set up its distribution company [2]. These later dates belong to the European distributor rather than to the soap or its maker. This article follows 1995 as the founding year of the manufacturer, while noting that the soap's own launch date is not on record.

History & milestones

The soap's European history begins in 2009. That year, Erica Ramsay of Spa Vivent, at the time a cosmetics studio in Buxtehude in northern Germany, came across DUDU Osun and bought a larger stock of it [2]. As demand for the soap grew, Spa Vivent Vertriebs GmbH was founded in 2010, and the business shifted from running a cosmetics studio to distribution.

From 2010, Spa Vivent worked directly with Tropical Naturals as its European distribution partner. In 2011, a Spa Vivent team travelled to Nigeria to meet the manufacturer.

In 2022, according to Spa Vivent, DUDU Osun was rated "sehr gut" ("very good") in the March 2022 issue of the consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST [2].

Ownership

DUDU Osun belongs to Tropical Naturals Limited, which both owns the brand and makes the soap. No change of ownership, acquisition or parent group is known.

Spa Vivent does not own the brand. It describes itself as the exclusive European distribution partner of Tropical Naturals Ltd., bringing the original DUDU Osun black soap and the related natural cream Dudu-Shea to Europe [5]. The two companies' roles are sometimes blurred in older material. The archived Wikipedia revision described "Spa Vivent" as a variant of the soap developed for the German and Scandinavian market [8], whereas Spa Vivent's own pages present it as a distribution company rather than a product line.

Philosophy & positioning

The soap is positioned around tradition. Spa Vivent calls it the "original" black soap and says it is still made in the old, traditional way, with a recipe drawing on skin-care ingredients that were already in use among Africa's earliest peoples. The manufacturer frames it in similar terms, as a soap crafted from age-old African recipes refined over generations, intended to nourish the skin as well as clean it.

The basic method is the one long used for West African black soap. Palm kernel oil is turned into soap with the help of ash from burnt palm leaves and cocoa pods, which also gives the bar its dark colour. Shea butter, aloe vera, honey and lime juice are then added after this soap-making step. Tropical Naturals notes that, traditionally, black soap gets its colour from the ashes of plantain peels, cocoa pods and palm bunches.

The other side of the positioning is versatility. The distributor markets DUDU Osun as a single bar for the body, face and hair, and even as a shaving soap. This all-in-one use is central to how the soap is presented to European buyers.

Products & innovation

The core of the range is the black soap bar. In Europe it comes in two versions, told apart by the colour of the box. DUDU Osun CLASSIC, in black packaging, contains the brand's fragrance, which Spa Vivent describes as certified. DUDU Osun PURE, in white packaging, is fragrance-free. Spa Vivent also sells the bars in sets.

The ingredient list published by the distributor names palm kernel oil, ash from cocoa pods and palm leaves, natural glycerin, shea butter, fragrance, honey, lemon juice, lime juice, African sandalwood and aloe vera. Because it contains honey, Spa Vivent states that the soap is not vegan.

The camwood ingredient is identified in two ways. On the distributor's page, it appears under its ingredient-label name as Baphia nitida, given in German as "Afrikanisches Sandelholz" ("African sandalwood") [4]. The current Wikipedia article on African black soap instead associates camwood leaves with Pterocarpus osun [7]. The archived Wikipedia revision on Dudu-Osun itself linked camwood to Baphia nitida, in line with the distributor.

Beyond the bar, the manufacturer lists DUDU Osun Liquid Soap and a shea butter product among its lines. Tropical Naturals says it invests in research and development to improve its products and explore new natural ingredients, though no specific patents, technologies or clinical claims are attached to the brand.

On certification, Spa Vivent says DUDU Osun is certified for the European market under the ICADA natural cosmetics standard, and that the soap is made and packaged entirely in Nigeria [5].

Recognition & reception

The most concrete outside assessment is the ÖKO-TEST rating. Spa Vivent reports that the soap received a "sehr gut" grade in the magazine's March 2022 issue [2].

Media attention has otherwise been limited. The 2018 Deutsche Welle report on Abiola Ogunrinde's soap is the main piece of international coverage linked to the brand [9]. No coverage in major international beauty titles is known.

The brand's standing in reference works has also shifted. English Wikipedia once carried a standalone article on Dudu-Osun, but after a deletion discussion closed on 12 May 2025, the title was turned into a redirect to the general article on African black soap [8]. That article now mentions Dudu-Osun only briefly.

Current status

DUDU Osun is active. As of October 2026, Spa Vivent offered nine DUDU Osun items, including the CLASSIC and PURE bars and sets, and the manufacturer's website carried a 2024 copyright notice. Tropical Naturals states that its products are now available in many countries around the world, and in Europe the brand continues to be distributed by Spa Vivent.
