Overview
Durance is a French maker of scented candles, home fragrances and natural-origin cosmetics, based in the village of Grignan in the Drôme Provençale region of southern France. The company traces its modern identity to 1997, when the Ruth family took over a small lavender farm at the foot of the Château de Grignan and began turning a local agricultural operation into a fragrance and home-scent house [5]. It remains an active, family-led business, distributing through its own boutiques, department-store corners and pharmacies, and was reported to reach 48 countries by the late 2010s.
The brand's founding date is recorded differently depending on the source. Durance dates its own origin to 1997 [5], the year the Ruth family acquired the farm. French Wikipedia traces the underlying business further back, to a lavender operation called Le Lavandin de Grignan founded in 1986 by a farming couple, with the Durance name adopted only after the two entities merged in 1998 [9]. The 1986 date therefore describes the pre-brand farm, while 1997–1998 marks the start of Durance as it exists today.

Origin & founders
The business grew out of Le Lavandin de Grignan, a small farm in the Drôme that cultivated lavender flowers and produced essential oil. In 1997 the Ruth family acquired it, and over the following years built a fragrance and home-scent house on those agricultural roots. The French editorial outlet Luxe en France records that Olivier Ruth, the father, and later his son Nicolas Ruth developed the offering out of a shared interest in Provençal craft and land [11].
Nicolas Ruth's path into the company is documented in business press. A holder of an ESSEC business diploma, he had previously worked for web agencies — including on e-commerce for Société Générale — before joining his father in 2005 and taking over direction of the company that year [12]. He described the early operation in plain terms, recalling that the workshop where he started had once been a chicken coop. He became chief executive in 2006, the point from which the company dates the start of its international expansion.
History & milestones
After the 1998 merger that established the Durance name, the company launched its signature scented candle the same year and introduced its first cosmetics collection in 1999. It relocated to new facilities in 2001 and opened its first Paris boutique on the rue Vignon shortly afterward. Sources differ on the exact year: French Wikipedia places the opening in 2003 [9], while the Luxe en France profile gives 2004 [11].
Through the 2000s and 2010s the company expanded its retail footprint and formalised its approach to ingredients. It adopted a "Naturalité Charter" in 2008, committing to a minimum of 95% natural ingredients, and partnered with the Festival de la Correspondance de Grignan from 2006. By 2013 it operated 18 boutiques in France and counted around 2,500 sales points worldwide. In 2016 it released the "Empreinte" collection in collaboration with the French ceramics manufacturer Revol.
Ownership
Durance sits within a holding structure that has changed names over time. Its parent has long been Provence Nature Développement; in December 2018 that holding was dissolved and absorbed by another, Oliniro Finance, which then took on the Provence Nature Développement name [9]. The brand is today listed in the portfolio of FBB Group, a French group whose holdings span home, bed-and-bath, beachwear and wellness and room-fragrance lines [10]. FBB Group's own materials do not state when it acquired the brand.
Philosophy & positioning
Durance presents itself as a family house rooted in Provence, building products around locally sourced natural ingredients and handcraft. On its history page the company frames its work as a "subtle alliance between elegance and simplicity" and a "refined but accessible art of living." Its motto, recorded by Luxe en France, is "L'Art de Vivre, L'Art de la Terre" — the art of living, the art of the land — and the same profile sums up the brand's watchwords as authenticity, ethics and elegance.
The positioning is consistently described as French luxury naturalism aimed at consumers seeking refined, ethically made home fragrance and cosmetics. The company emphasises French manufacturing, stating that it is "proud of [its] French production," and notes that its fragrances are developed with master perfumers in Grasse, the historic centre of French perfumery.
Products & innovation
The company's range centres on home and personal fragrance: scented candles, concentrated room perfumes, reed and dried-flower diffusers, perfumed sachets, plus body and face care and personal fragrances. Its handmade perfumed candle, launched in 1998, is treated as the signature product and is described as entirely produced in the Grignan workshops, where the wax — a blend of vegetable waxes enriched with beeswax — is mixed in-house and the candles are hand-finished with raffia ribbon. Scented candles have historically formed the larger part of the business, accounting for around 60% of revenue according to a 2020 business feature [12].
Hero ingredients reflect the Provençal sourcing story: lavender, rose, olive oil and borage oil among them. The brand says its rose is grown in the Drôme through organic agriculture with a named local cultivator, and that its borage oil comes from an initiative with Haute-Provence farmers. Newer ranges include a "Serenity" collection built around notes of orange blossom, linden blossom and honey.
Recognition
Durance received the Prix Janus from the Institut Français du Design in 2014 [11]. Beyond design recognition, coverage has come chiefly from French outlets: a 2020 business feature in Le Journal des Entreprises examined its "made in Provence" strategy from field to factory, including an interview with Nicolas Ruth, and Luxe en France published an editorial profile of the house in 2017.
Sustainability
Durance's stated commitments centre on natural-origin formulation and local sourcing. The company says its products can reach up to 99% ingredients of natural origin under the ISO 16128 standard, a measure of how much of a formula derives from natural materials [6]. It describes sourcing its natural extracts as close to its workshops as possible and names specific local supply efforts for rose, olive oil and borage oil. Candles are manufactured at Grignan and fragrances at Grasse. According to the Luxe en France profile, the company does not test its cosmetics on animals [11]. Its sustainability page lists no third-party certifications such as Ecocert or Cosmos.
Current status
Durance is an active business. Its headquarters and 4,000-square-metre workshop are in Grignan, with a logistics facility at Valréas; a 2020 feature reported roughly €35 million in revenue for 2019 and about 120 staff [12]. The company sells through 15 of its own boutiques in France alongside department-store corners at Galeries Lafayette and Printemps and a network of French pharmacies, and reported a presence across 48 countries with 69 boutiques worldwide in a 2017 snapshot [11]. Its official site continues to run seasonal campaigns, and the brand maintains regional distribution including in the Gulf, where the durancegcc.com site is operated by a separate distributor rather than the brand itself.
