Summary

Overview

Efva Attling is a Swedish jewellery and design house founded in Stockholm in 1996 by the silversmith and designer of the same name [2]. The company is known primarily for jewellery in gold, silver and platinum, but it also produces a fragrance line, which is the part of its catalogue relevant to beauty retail. The brand operates under the motto "Beauty with a Thought," a phrase the founder uses to describe pieces that pair Scandinavian design with messages on social themes.

The house remains active. It runs seven concept stores in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Helsinki and is represented by more than 200 retailers internationally [2]. In 2026 the company marked its thirtieth year, an anniversary covered in a Vogue Scandinavia feature on the founder's career [9].

Origin & founders

Efva Katarina Attling, born in Stockholm on 18 February 1952, came to jewellery design after several earlier careers. She worked as a model for twelve years after being discovered by the agent Eileen Ford, then formed the pop group X Models in the early 1980s and recorded the Swedish hit "Two of us." She also designed clothing for Levi's and H&M before returning to jewellery and establishing her own line in 1996 [2]. Wikipedia dates the start of her jewellery line to the "mid-1990s" without naming an exact year, which is consistent with the 1996 the company states [8].

The first studio and boutique opened on Hornsgatan in the southern part of central Stockholm. The debut piece, a necklace titled "Homo Sapiens," became widely known after Madonna was seen wearing it, and the brand lists Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander among later wearers [2].

Philosophy & positioning

The founder's stated credo, "Beauty with a Thought," frames each collection as carrying a message. In her own words, the work mixes "humour mixed with seriousness and love," and she has said she wants the jewellery to act as a conversation piece. The company describes its design language as modern Scandinavian simplicity combined with an edgy twist, and lists empowerment, equality and self-esteem among its values.

This thinking extends to a series of cause-led collections. According to the company, jewellery lines have supported the Swedish Red Cross, UNICEF Sweden and WWF Sweden, and it frames these partnerships as responsibility rather than charity. The founder summed up the brand's appeal bluntly in Vogue Scandinavia: "If you haven't got the humour, then don't buy my jewellery" [9].

Fragrances

Efva Attling introduced a perfume line in 2013, developed with Robertet, a long-established fragrance house in Grasse, France [5]. The brand says the perfumes are "made in one of France's oldest perfume houses, Robertet in Grasse — the world leader in natural ingredients," and that the bottles were designed by the founder in collaboration with Pierre Dinand [3], a bottle designer. According to the company, the bottle shape was inspired by a seal found at a flea market, with stoppers shaped like jewellery and names matching the brand's jewellery collections.

The line comprises seven perfumes released between 2013 and 2018. They include Twosome, an eau de parfum built on lemon zest, pink pepper and cassis over a base of patchouli, vetiver and black amber; Human, described as a woody, spicy scent for women and men launched in 2014; Miss Butterfly, a floral-fruity fragrance; Rose Petals; Kaboom, built around angelica seeds and juniper berries and also sold as a scented candle; Amor Vincit Omnia; and Captured Harmony, the most recent of the seven, presented in 2018 [13]. The fragrances are produced in Grasse rather than in Sweden [3].

Recognition

The founder has received several honours over the brand's history. In 2018 she was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Swedish ELLE Gala [2]. In 2014 she became the first winner of the newly created Accessory category at the Guldknappen Award. Earlier, in April 2011, she received a medal from the Royal Swedish Patriotic Society for her work as an internationally recognised jewellery designer [8]. She has also undertaken commissioned design work, including the statuette for the Polar Music Prize.

Current status

Efva Attling is an active company. Its most recent visible activity includes 2024 and 2025 jewellery collections and a thirtieth-anniversary programme spanning 1996 to 2026. The brand's reach is regional rather than global, centred on the Nordic countries — with stores in Sweden, Norway, Finland and New York noted by Wikipedia — alongside its international wholesale network [8]. The 2013–2018 fragrance line remains part of the company's catalogue.
