Summary

Overview

El Ganso is a Spanish fashion house founded in Madrid in 2004 by the brothers Álvaro and Clemente Cebrián [3]. It built its name on clothing and footwear that reinterpret British preppy style, and the company describes itself as known for "its british style reinterpreted and the quality of its fabrics," with all pieces designed in Spain. The brand later extended into beauty with a line of eau de toilette fragrances produced under licence by Perfumes y Diseño.

The company remains active and family-owned. After a private-equity interlude in the mid-2010s, the founding Cebrián family bought back full control in 2018 [7], and El Ganso reported revenue approaching 70 million euros in 2024 [5].

Origin and founders

The idea for El Ganso grew out of the founders' student years. According to a case study by the IESE business school, Álvaro and Clemente Cebrián worked as waiters in London during their university summers and noticed a casual, smart style that they felt was missing in Spain — a look they described as "preppy on the cheap" [3]. They launched the company in the summer of 2004 with the support and counsel of their father, an IESE graduate.

The first store opened in central Madrid, on Calle Fuencarral, in 2006, and a turning-point product came early in the form of the Jeremy Stanford shoe line. From the start the company favoured an unconventional approach to marketing: IESE records that El Ganso largely avoided traditional advertising and sponsorships, on the principle that "the best way to go about marketing is simply to make a good product" [3].

History and expansion

El Ganso grew from a single Madrid shop into an international retailer. In 2012 it opened a store on Carnaby Street in London, the heart of the British style it drew on. The scale of the store network is reported differently across sources and dates: the IESE case study counted 32 stores across five countries (Spain, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom and Chile) around 2013 [3], while later figures cite roughly 190 stores in eleven countries and, more recently, about 180 points of sale [5]. The differences reflect the period each source describes rather than a contradiction.

The company also moved its manufacturing footprint close to home. Supporting brand-profile material states that every collection is designed and made entirely in Europe from local raw materials, using fabrics and yarns from Italian mills.

Ownership

El Ganso has passed through one significant change of ownership and back again. In October 2015, L Capital — the private-equity arm later known as L Catterton, linked to LVMH — acquired a 49% stake from the founding family [6]. Three years later, in September 2018, the Cebrián family reacquired that stake to return the business to full family ownership [7]. Ownership is now shared among the Cebrián brothers and their father, with Álvaro and Alberto Cebrián directing the company; co-founder Clemente Cebrián has stepped back from day-to-day operations [7].

Philosophy and positioning

El Ganso positions itself around personality and good humour as much as craftsmanship. In material tied to its fragrance line, the company frames fun, a sense of humour and optimism as "just as crucial to El Ganso as craftsmanship," alongside an invitation to "be fresh, natural, and free" [4]. The clothing has been associated with a "suit and sneakers" look popular among university-aged customers in Spain, and with a broadly preppy, cosmopolitan aesthetic.

Products and fragrance

El Ganso's core business is menswear, womenswear and footwear, with accessories. Its beauty presence is a fragrance collection of eau de toilette sprays produced under licence by Perfumes y Diseño, presented as the work of "four friends with very different personalities" [4]. Editions include Limoncello, Bravo Monsieur, Ciao Bella!, Señorita Mon Amour, After Game, Friday Edition, Hey Sunshine and Part Time Hero.

The brand makes several stated claims for the line. It describes Limoncello, a "fresh woody citrus fougère," as a vegan fragrance with "97% biodegradable components and 97% ingredients of natural origin," packaged in recyclable glass with FSC cardboard and not tested on animals [2].

Current status

El Ganso is an active, family-owned company. Trade coverage reports that it returned to net profit in 2023 after several years of losses, roughly doubled its EBITDA in 2024 while nearing 70 million euros in sales, and forecast around 75 million euros in revenue for 2025, supported by an investment plan to renovate its store network and a focus on international expansion and online growth [5]. The fragrance line remains in distribution, with editions extending into the mid-2020s.
