Elizabeth Løvegal

Elizabeth Løvegal is a Danish natural-skincare company founded in 1983 [1] by its namesake on the island of Bornholm. It makes handmade creams, salves and oils from organic medicinal herbs, and presents itself as a small counter-movement to the commercial skincare industry.

The company grew from a family recipe: Elizabeth Løvegal has said she was inspired by her mother's coldcream, made with rose water [2]. More than forty years on, it remains an independent, single-country operation, still publishing and selling in early 2026 [3].

Elizabeth Løvegal established the business in 1983 at Brændesmark Urtegaard, a farm on a ridge overlooking the Baltic Sea on Bornholm. The surrounding farmland had been cultivated biodynamically since 1978 and was approved as organic in 1992 [4]. The founder grows medicinal plants in her own herb garden, hand-harvests and dries them, and produces skincare in small series from old recipes.

Production has stayed deliberately manual. Løvegal has described concentrating on each batch by hand, using only two machines — a large mixer and a filling machine. In 2019 the factory moved to Sæbefabrikken, a shared sustainable business site in Søborg near Copenhagen [2].

The company frames itself as a return to simple skincare. According to Elizabeth Løvegal, she "discovered how simple and natural skincare can be made" and set out to avoid chemistry and fillers. The formulas follow traditional pharmacy methods, with herbs slowly extracted into water or virgin oil, then hand-stirred and bottled.

The brand says its products contain no synthetic chemicals, parabens, fillers, emulsifiers, dyes or artificial preservatives, and that they are vegan and not tested on animals [1]. It describes its pricing as modest for the category, attributing the low prices to careful, advertising-free operation.

The range covers creams, salves and oils, including a lavender cream, a marigold body oil, a lip balm, a men's moisturizer and a four-herb skin tonic. The company identifies its moisturizer (Fugtighedscreme) as its best-selling product [3]. A medicinal-plant oil (Lægeplanteolie) is described as suited to larger areas of skin affected by eczema, itching and irritation [4].

The herbs grown at Brændesmark include hyssop, lavender, mullein, mint, angelica, marigold and sage [4]. Products are packaged in reusable glass containers.

Elizabeth Løvegal remains active as an independent Danish brand. It sells through its own webshop and a range of Danish retailers, including health-food stores and the retailer Matas. Its most recent public activity is a blog post from February 2026 announcing price increases tied to rising raw-material costs [3].
