Overview
Engelhard, legally Engelhard Arzneimittel GmbH & Co. KG, is a family-owned German maker of over-the-counter medicines based in Niederdorfelden, just outside Frankfurt am Main. The business grew out of a Frankfurt pharmacy, and the company dates its founding to 31 October 1872, when pharmacist Karl Philipp Engelhard opened a factory for pharmaceutical preparations [2]. Its best-known products are the ivy-leaf cough medicine Prospan, the Iceland moss throat pastilles sold under the Isla name, and the wound-healing product Tyrosur. Alongside these sits a small range for the skin, from zinc ointment to plain white petroleum jelly.
Engelhard is first and foremost a pharmaceutical company rather than a cosmetics house; German Wikipedia lists its industry as pharmacy and mentions cosmetics only as one of several product areas [11]. More than 150 years after its founding, it is still run by the founding family, now in its fourth and fifth generations, and its products are sold in more than 100 countries.
Origin & founders
The family's link to medicine predates the company itself. In 1826 Georg Heinrich Engelhard opened the Rosen-Apotheke, or Rose Pharmacy, in Frankfurt. His son, Karl Philipp Engelhard, trained as a pharmacist and, according to German Wikipedia, studied under the chemist Justus von Liebig [11].
Karl Philipp's interest lay in developing his own remedies. In 1868, looking for something to soothe sore throats, he created a paste made from Iceland moss, a lichen long used in folk medicine. Wikipedia notes that the first order for this Iceland moss paste was recorded the same year. The recipe proved durable: the company says that roughly 150 years later its "Isla-Moos" pastilles still rank among its best-selling products.
Four years later, on 31 October 1872, Karl Philipp founded his factory for pharmaceutical preparations in Frankfurt. The company describes him as both a skilled pharmacist and a capable businessman, and says his products soon sold across Germany and beyond. He kept the family pharmacy for some decades longer, selling it in 1901 for lack of time, but remained tied to the profession; in 1922 he was made an honorary member of the German pharmacists' association.
Two dates therefore compete for the start of the story. The company's own history page opens with the line that everything began "in 1872 with the Rosenapotheke in Frankfurt", which blends the two events. The pharmacy itself opened in 1826, while the factory that became today's company was founded in 1872. Engelhard counts 1872 as its founding year, and it marked its 150th anniversary in 2022. Wikipedia also gives 31 October 1872 as the founding date.
History & milestones
### Growth in Frankfurt
Demand for the early products soon outgrew hand production. In 1888 Engelhard installed its first gas engine and moved to machine manufacturing. Two years later, in 1890, the company launched Dialon Puder, a powder for children and for skin care, and began using individual packaging that carried the pharmacy's name. The company presents this as an early example of brand-led marketing.
By 1891 rising sales meant the premises were too small, and Engelhard built a new factory of its own in north-east Frankfurt. The company says the decision shaped a business model and strategy that still define it.
### A family business across generations
From 1919 Karl Philipp's sons, Paul and Max Engelhard, ran the firm. They continued to build the Dialon brand, and from 1923 promoted it with advertising campaigns and packaging designed in the company's own print shop.
In 1939, in the shadow of the Second World War, the third generation, Karl and Max Engelhard, took over. The Frankfurt factory was destroyed during the war. According to the company, management and staff rebuilt it together, and production of the core products resumed in 1948.
### Penicillin and Prospan
The post-war years brought two of the company's most important decisions. In 1949 Engelhard added penicillin to its range, and the company says it was among the first German firms to process the antibiotic [2]. Other antibiotics followed.
The second decision would shape the company's identity for decades. According to Engelhard, Dr. Karl Engelhard's daughter Gloria suffered from severe whooping cough in the 1940s. Looking for help, he spent night after night studying the medical literature as a pharmacist and came across the ivy plant [6]. That search led to Prospan. The ivy-based herbal cough drops went on sale in 1950 and, according to the company, quickly became its best-selling and most heavily advertised product.
In 1959 the company introduced Tyrosur, another in-house development based on the active ingredient tyrothricin. Engelhard says it is still sold today as a wound-healing product for self-treatment.
### Modernisation and expansion
From 1971 the fourth generation, Dr. Rolf, Karl Michael and Georg Maximilian Engelhard, great-grandsons of the founder, led the company through the recession of the 1970s. Engelhard had been active abroad since the 1930s, but from 1980 it began what it calls a concentrated and rapid internationalisation.
In 1991, after years of research, Prospan became available as an alcohol-free and sugar-free cough syrup suitable for children. The company describes this as an important boost for both its domestic and export business. Wikipedia lists another product, Trachisan, as introduced in 1979.
### The move to Niederdorfelden
After more than a century in Frankfurt, the company needed a building that suited modern production and higher demand. It chose Niederdorfelden, a small municipality just outside the city. Accounts of the timing differ slightly. The company dates the move to "from 1996". German Wikipedia states that a new production site there began operating in 1997 and that the whole company relocated in 2000 [11]. The regional news site kinzig.news also dates the settlement to 2000. The figures are compatible, describing a move that unfolded in stages.
### Into the 21st century
In 2001 the fifth generation, Oliver Karl Maximilian and Richard Mark Engelhard, joined the management. Two years later, in 2003, Engelhard scientists decoded how alpha-hederin, a compound found in ivy, works in the body. The company describes this as a milestone in what it calls "rational phytotherapy", meaning herbal medicine backed by scientific study of how its ingredients act [2].
By its 140th anniversary in 2012, Engelhard said it employed more than 300 people and sold its products in more than 90 countries. In 2014 the Isla range gained isla med hydro+, a product classed as a medical device. Construction of a new production plant and an additional administrative complex began in 2020, and the company celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022.
Ownership
Engelhard is an independent family company with no parent group. Its management has stayed with the Engelhard family since 1872. The company's family page names Richard Engelhard, Dr. Rolf Engelhard and Oliver Engelhard as managing directors, and says the three run the business together across the fourth and fifth generations. A 2022 report by kinzig.news described the company's leadership as entirely in family hands, with brothers Oliver and Richard Engelhard representing the fifth generation [14]. The Hessen-Champions award page from 2024 likewise describes the firm as run by the two brothers.
No acquisitions of other companies or sales of Engelhard itself are documented. In April 2026 the company announced four new infant-formula products under the Novalac brand for the German market [10]; the nature of its arrangement with Novalac has not been made public.
Philosophy & positioning
Engelhard presents itself through the idea of responsible medicine. The company says it understood responsible medicine as its task "generations ago" and acted on it, and lists ethical, responsible and sustainable action as part of its identity. Its tagline, "Gesundheit bedeutet die Welt für uns", translates as "Health means the world to us". The company says it invests continuously in research and development for its health brands and applies the highest quality standards to its work.
Long-term thinking is a recurring theme. On its environment and social page, Engelhard says it aims to "think in generations, not in quarters", a stance it links to its family ownership. It also stresses "Made in Germany" as a mark of quality. All of its products are made exclusively in Niederdorfelden, according to the company as reported by kinzig.news [14].
The company positions itself as one of the leading brand manufacturers in the over-the-counter sector, meaning medicines sold without a prescription, usually through pharmacies. Its relationship with pharmacy staff shows in its activities: in 2026 its "Engelhard Selfcare Saturdays" event series for pharmacists and pharmacy assistants made its first stop in Austria.
On research, Engelhard says patient needs are at the centre of its work. It describes much of its development as step-by-step innovation, such as new dosage forms and products that are easier to use. In the company's words, what counts is "that it works and is very well tolerated", whether the patient is an infant or a senior.
Products & innovation
Engelhard's range is built around a handful of long-established brands. German Wikipedia names Prospan, Isla, Tyrosur and Esprico as its most successful products. The company organises its range into four therapy areas: respiratory conditions, skin conditions, digestive complaints and concentration.
### Respiratory care
Prospan is the company's flagship. It is based on what Engelhard calls its "Efeu-Spezial-Extrakt", a special extract from ivy leaves, and the company presents itself as a pioneer of rational herbal medicine on the strength of this work. Engelhard describes Prospan as the herbal expectorant with the highest sales worldwide. A 2015 trade-press portrait in APOTHEKE ADHOC reported that, according to the company, Prospan was market leader in more than 40 countries [12].
The Isla pastilles carry on Karl Philipp Engelhard's original Iceland moss recipe from 1868. The company describes Isla as one of the first ready-made medicines available in its time. The respiratory range also includes Sinolpan forte, based on cineole, and Trachilid lozenges with lidocaine for sore throats.
### Skin and wound care
For the skin, Engelhard describes its products as "effective remedies for your skin" and as "the modern way of skin care and wound treatment". The range includes:
- Tyrosur, a gel and powder containing tyrothricin for wound healing. The Hessen-Champions award page calls it a pioneer in modern wound treatment. - Mykoderm, containing nystatin and miconazole, for fungal skin infections. - Zinksalbe Dialon, a zinc oxide ointment for wounds that are healing. It continues the Dialon name first used for the children's skin-care powder of 1890. - Weißes Vaselin, a white petroleum jelly for stressed skin.
### Digestive and other products
The company also sells Velgastin, containing simethicone, for bloating and wind, and Glycilax glycerol suppositories as a laxative, as well as chlorhexidine mouth rinses. In 2026 it extended into specialised infant nutrition with four Novalac formulas.
### Science
The company's best-known research concerns ivy. Its 2003 work on alpha-hederin is the main scientific milestone it cites. The company says it relies on clinical testing to show that its products are effective and safe. No specific patents or named research partnerships are documented.
Sustainability
Engelhard links its environmental and social work to its long-term, family-owned outlook. The company says it uses renewable energy in new building projects and collects rainwater for its sanitary facilities, and that it pays attention to "the many small things" in how it uses resources.
Its social commitments include a partnership with the children's charity Plan International and support for the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk, a German children's aid organisation. Employees also contribute through child sponsorships. Locally, the company says it supports projects ranging from kindergartens to local clubs, and describes itself as rooted in the region. According to kinzig.news, about a third of its staff come from the surrounding Main-Kinzig district.
The company has also published figures on equality. In March 2026 it reported a gender pay gap of 1.8 per cent and an above-average share of women in management. Kinzig.news reported in 2022 that half of management positions were held by women, achieved without a quota.
Recognition
In 2024 Engelhard received a Hessen-Champions award, a business prize from the German state of Hesse, in the category "Weltmarktführer" (global market leader) [13]. The award page describes Engelhard as a leading OTC brand manufacturer, with brands sold in more than 100 countries.
The pharmacy trade press has also tracked the company. In 2015 APOTHEKE ADHOC profiled Engelhard under the headline "Die Nummer 2 im Phytomarkt". With about 13 million packs sold, the company ranked second in the German herbal-medicine market behind Bionorica [12]. The portrait noted that, with Prospan and Isla, the business depended heavily on the cold season. It counted 27 products in the portfolio and roughly 350 employees. Revenue stood at about 90 million euros, around a third each from Germany and other European markets. The company had distribution partners in about 90 countries and was known in the Middle East and South America as well as in Europe.
Current status
Engelhard is active. It remains independent and family-run, and in 2026 published several press releases, including the April 2026 launch of its Novalac infant formulas in Germany.
Published figures on the company's size vary by source and date. Its own history page refers to more than 450 employees in Germany. German Wikipedia gives about 550 employees as of January 2024 and revenue of around 160 million euros for 2022 [11]. The 2024 Hessen-Champions award page cites more than 550 staff and annual revenue of more than 170 million euros. Wikipedia lists Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America as the main export regions, and production remains concentrated at the company's site in Niederdorfelden.
