Summary

Overview

Espara is an Austrian family company based in Salzburg that develops and sells food supplements. It was founded in 1996 by Franz and Monika Pointner, a couple who had already been trading supplements for a decade before they started their own label [3]. Its range covers vitamins, minerals, amino acids, plant extracts and a line of herbal tinctures it calls "alchemical essences", alongside a small group of topical creams and gels.

The company is not a cosmetics house in the usual sense. Its connection to beauty runs mainly through supplements it groups under skin, hair and nails, and through four topical products. What gives the brand its character is a stated debt to the natural philosopher Paracelsus, a commitment to listing every ingredient on the label, and a gradual move towards vegan, organic and regionally made products. Espara remains privately held by the Pointner family and is active as of 2026.

Origin & founders

Before Espara existed, Franz and Monika Pointner had been in the supplement trade since 1986 [3]. According to the company's own account, they noticed that many people cared a great deal about eating well and getting enough micronutrients. From that observation came the idea for a broad supplement range that would deliver vitamins and other nutrients in a simple, safe way at a price ordinary consumers could manage.

They set up the business in Salzburg in 1996. The company says the Pointner family went on to build it into a respected supplier across the German-speaking region. The firm trades today as Espara GmbH, registered with the commercial court in Salzburg [7].

The name itself is tied to the company's outlook. Espara says it takes its name from "essences" as Paracelsus understood them, and that these essences remain one of its main areas of work [4].

History & milestones

For its first two decades, Espara was run directly by its founders. In 2015 the company began having its products certified by the Vegane Gesellschaft Österreich, the Austrian vegan society, and it now says that almost all of its products carry that label [10]. Products that are vegetarian but not vegan carry a separate vegetarian mark.

A change in leadership followed in 2017, when Markus Schwarzenbacher became managing director of Espara GmbH [3]. The company notes that he was supported for a long time afterwards by the Pointner family's experience. Franz Pointner, the co-founder, died on 12 August 2024 [3].

The company's news page records a steady stream of smaller changes since then. In 2024 it introduced its first folding carton printed with Braille, so that blind and partially sighted customers can identify the product by touch, and it switched its acerola powder to organic quality. In 2026 it added two new alchemical essences, Eibisch Compositum and Tormentill Compositum. Later the same year it launched Magnesium Multi-7 capsules, increased the capsule count of its organic astaxanthin product without changing the pack, and replaced its Hyaluron-Biotin capsules with a successor called Hyaluron-Komplex. The company also states that it continued to support the work of Herzkinder Österreich through a sponsorship in 2026.

Ownership

Espara is a family business with no parent company. Its team page lists Monika Pointner, the co-founder, and Dr. med. univ. Kerstin Pointner as owners, while day-to-day management lies with managing director Markus Schwarzenbacher [6]. No acquisitions, investors or sister brands are documented.

Philosophy & positioning

Espara frames its work around the figure of Paracelsus, whom it describes as a natural scholar. "Like Paracelsus, we particularly like to rely on the power of plants," the company writes in its statement of principles [4]. That idea is most visible in the alchemical essence line, which the company describes as both a focus of its work and the origin of its name.

The company sets out five working principles, each phrased as an aim to be as natural, as pure, as effective, as transparent and as sustainable as possible. In practice this means several concrete commitments, as the company describes them:

- Natural where practical. Product developer Dr. Heidi Oberbichler is quoted as saying the company uses natural ingredients wherever it can, and turns to synthetic raw materials, such as some vitamins, only when there is no alternative or a natural source is not practical. - Purity and free-from options. Where possible, products are made without gluten, lactose, fructose or animal ingredients, and coloured bars on the website and packaging show which apply. Espara says it uses only raw materials that are certified free of genetic modification, and that its manufacturers must prove hygiene and quality standards through certificates. - Formulation. The company says it combines nutrients with the aim of improving how well the body absorbs them and avoiding ingredients that work against each other. - Transparency. Espara uses clear capsule shells "so as to hide nothing" and says it lists all ingredients on the label as far as possible, including carrier substances in plant extracts that the law does not require it to name. It presents this as a point of difference from other supplement makers [4].

The company calls its products "leistbar", meaning affordable, and its tagline describes Espara as offering "all vital nutrients for your health".

Products & innovation

Espara's catalogue is organised both by nutrient type and by area of use. The nutrient categories include amino acids, antioxidants, gut bacteria, enzymes, microalgae, minerals, omega fatty acids, plants, medicinal mushrooms and vitamins. The areas of use range from sleep and immunity to digestion, the heart and circulation, and a group for skin, hair and nails. The company says its plant-based and orthomolecular supplements (products built around nutrients the body normally uses) are made to its own recipes and produced almost entirely in Austria [2].

The products the company highlights as best-sellers are its artichoke-choline capsules, 3 mg melatonin capsules, 400 mg magnesium capsules and chewable acerola vitamin C tablets. The alchemical essences form a separate line of herbal preparations that the company continues to expand.

The range that sits closest to cosmetics is a small group of topical products: a sea buckthorn and avocado cream, a devil's claw cream, a devil's claw gel and a frankincense cream [9].

### Certifications

Two forms of third-party certification are documented. Most products carry the vegan label of the Vegane Gesellschaft Österreich, a process the company began in 2015. A smaller organic range, which includes juices, capsules and pressed tablets, carries the inspection mark of Austria Bio Garantie and meets the European Union's organic regulation [11]. The organic certification covers only that subset, not the whole catalogue.

Sustainability

Espara says resource-conscious operation is a high priority and that it is taking steps towards it gradually [5]. The measures it lists are practical rather than sweeping:

- Products sold in plastic jars have moved to jars made from recycled PET; the company says the screw caps will follow once recycled versions are available. - Two products, frankincense capsules and organic black seed oil capsules, are also sold in refill pouches made from kraft paper and plant-based plastic. - Organic products have been moved into glass packaging, with the exception of the acerola and barley grass powders. - Most of the contract manufacturers that make Espara's products are regional companies, chiefly in the Austrian state of Salzburg, and labels, cartons and packaging are also sourced from regional suppliers. - The company says it avoids plastic packaging where it can and tries to reuse its suppliers' packaging material.

Espara also acknowledges a limit to its organic ambitions. It notes that some plant ingredients in its recipes are still not available in organic quality, or not in the form or at a price that would make them workable.

Distribution

Espara sells through its own online shop and also through health professionals and specialist shops. Its website offers a finder for doctors, therapists and specialist retailers who carry the products. The team includes staff dedicated to pharmacy and specialist-retail customers, and others who provide on-site customer service, training and seminars, in some cases with backgrounds in naturopathy and kinesiology.

Current status

Espara is active. Its news page shows regular product launches through 2026, most recently the Hyaluron-Komplex capsules announced on 1 October 2026 [8]. The company remains in the hands of the Pointner family, with Markus Schwarzenbacher as managing director.
