Summary

Overview

Estelle & Thild is a Swedish organic skincare and beauty brand founded in Stockholm in 2007 [4]. It built its range around certified-organic formulas positioned as high-performing alternatives to conventional skincare, and grew from a Scandinavian start-up into a brand distributed across Europe and parts of Asia. In February 2023 the company was acquired by Lyko Group AB, the Swedish hair-care and beauty retailer [7]. Its website and core product lines remain in operation under the Stockholm-based company Valley Beauty Brands AB [2].

Origin & founders

The brand was created by Pernilla Rönnberg, who had previously worked as chief executive of a conventional skincare company before moving into the organic sector [5]. According to editorial accounts of the brand's history, the idea grew out of her search for organic skincare she considered suitable for her two young daughters, Estelle and Mathilde; unable to find products that met her standards, she set out to develop her own line [4]. The brand's name comes from the daughters — "Thild" is a short form of Mathilde rather than the name of a separate child.

Rönnberg developed the business plan during an Executive MBA at the Stockholm School of Economics, which she pursued while on maternity leave, and launched Estelle & Thild in 2007. The retailer spelling "Estelle&Thild Organic Beauty" is sometimes seen, but the company styles its name "Estelle & Thild".

Philosophy & positioning

Estelle & Thild presents itself as rooted in Scandinavian minimalism and describes its approach around three core ideas: clean, sustainable and vegan [2]. The company frames "clean beauty" as high-performing products made with a limited, carefully selected ingredient list, and says its formulas are plant-based with no animal-derived components. In a 2016 interview, Rönnberg described the goal as a sustainable business "producing organic innovative skincare without compromising on the experience or results" [6], reflecting the brand's central positioning that organic formulation need not mean reduced efficacy.

Products & innovation

The range spans skincare, body care, baby products, makeup and accessories. Its skincare is organised into named lines, including BioCalm, aimed at sensitive skin, and Super BioActive, positioned as an advanced anti-ageing range. Reported bestsellers from the mid-2010s included the Super BioActive, BioCalm and BioDefense serum-and-oil products [6]. The brand has highlighted Marine Micro Algae as a hero ingredient in its Super BioActive line, describing it as high in antioxidants. Body care is built around several fragrance collections such as Bergamot Patchouli and Coconut Cedarwood.

The company states that its formulas are certified organic by Ecocert, the independent certification body, and that they are free from pesticides and toxic residues [4]. Production has been reported in Denmark.

History & milestones

By 2011 the brand reported distribution through more than 400 outlets across Scandinavia — including department stores, beauty chains and pharmacies, and the Nordic cosmetics chain Kicks — with expansion planned into Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and France [4]. By 2016 it described reaching more than 1,300 stores worldwide, including Sephora in Singapore [6]. The brand's growth coincided with the broader rise of organic and clean beauty through the 2010s.

In 2023 the company was acquired by Lyko Group AB, a Swedish retailer in hair care and beauty that operates the Lyko.com website along with integrated stores and salons in Sweden and Norway; completion of the share purchase was planned for 1 February 2023.

Ownership

Lyko Group AB acquired all shares in Estelle & Thild AB in early 2023 [7]. The current website lists Valley Beauty Brands AB, a Stockholm-based company, as the operating entity behind the brand [2]. The precise relationship between Lyko and Valley Beauty Brands — whether the brand was transferred onward or is run under an operational arrangement — is not clarified in publicly available sources.

Recognition

Estelle & Thild and its founder have been profiled in beauty and business press, including Premium Beauty News in 2011 and The Beauty Gazette in 2016. The 2016 interview named Caroline Winberg, Penélope Cruz and Julia Restoin Roitfeld among the brand's reported supporters [6].

Current status

The brand was acquired by Lyko Group AB in February 2023 and continues to operate. As of 2026 its e-commerce site remains active under Valley Beauty Brands AB, and core lines such as BioCalm and Super BioActive are still sold. The site has been noticeably trimmed compared with earlier years — several editorial pages covering the founder's story, sustainability detail and ingredients no longer resolve — which points to reduced editorial investment alongside a continued product range.
