Overview
ETA is a Czech manufacturer of small household and personal-care appliances, founded in 1943 in the town of Hlinsko [6]. Best known in its home market for irons, vacuum cleaners and kitchen appliances, the company also produces a personal-care range — hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons, electric toothbrushes, facial cleansing brushes and other grooming tools — which places it within the beauty-accessories category. The brand remains active, trading internationally under the name "ETA since 1943" and domestically through the website eta.cz.
ETA is one of four product verticals (alongside kitchen, home care and major appliances) carried by the company, and it is the personal-care line that connects it to the beauty market. The business is owned by the Czech holding company HP TRONIC, which acquired it in 2011 [7].
Origin and founders
The company began on 3 September 1943, when Czech engineer and Prague entrepreneur Jan Prošvic (1907–1989), who owned a factory making electrotechnical equipment, joined with Vilém Eckhardt, a businessman from Chotěboř who ran a metalware factory [6]. Together they bought part of a factory building in Hlinsko and founded a joint-stock company called ESA. The name was an abbreviation of "Elektrotechnická společnost akciová," meaning roughly "Electrotechnical Joint-Stock Company" [6]. In its first year the firm employed around 40 people and made electric irons fitted with ceramic inserts; cookers with hotplates were added in 1944.
History and milestones
ESA was nationalised in 1948 after the Communist takeover, by which point it had grown to about 300 employees and a capacity of 200,000 irons a year [6]. In 1950 it was reorganised as the state enterprise Elektro-Praga Hlinsko. Vacuum-cleaner production moved to Hlinsko in 1952 and became the plant's main product line. The "ETA" trademark — an oval mark originally registered in 1929 — was transferred to the Hlinsko operation from MEOPTA Přerov in 1960, and it went on to become the most widely recognised name for electrical household appliances in the country [6].
Following the fall of communism, the company was privatised in 1993 and, in 1996, its brand, trademark and corporate name were unified as ETA a.s., with its seat at Poličská 444 in Hlinsko [6]. Under the strategic owner Plastkov from 2001, the company briefly diversified into automotive components before refocusing entirely on household appliances in 2008 [5].
Ownership
ETA has changed hands several times in the 21st century. In 2008 it was acquired by the Netherlands-registered BENSON OAK CAPITAL COÖPERATIEF [6]. On 31 October 2011 it was bought by HP TRONIC Zlín, and manufacturing was relocated to Milotice nad Bečvou [7]. HP TRONIC, founded in 1990 by Milan Hradil and based in Zlín, is a Czech holding and consumer-electronics group whose portfolio also includes the retail chains DATART and NAY; of its main brands, ETA is the only one that is also a manufacturer.
The location of the company's headquarters is recorded differently across sources. Business records and Czech Wikipedia give the registered seat as Hlinsko (Poličská 444), the town where ETA was founded and long manufactured [7]. The brand's own contact page lists a corporate address in Prague, at Křižíkova 148/34 in the Karlín district — an office associated with HP TRONIC's ownership [3]. Hlinsko remains the historical and manufacturing home, while production since 2011 has been based in Milotice nad Bečvou.
Philosophy and positioning
ETA presents itself as a traditional Czech appliance brand that has equipped households for more than 80 years, summed up in its tagline "Tady je doma" ("Here is Home"), which stresses comfort and domestic life. According to the parent company, spontaneous awareness of the brand among Czech consumers reaches as high as 96 percent, linked not only to the name but to the associations "tradition" and "quality" [8]. For its personal-care range, the company frames appliances as caring for the whole body, describing them as "helpers that will literally take care of you from head to toe."
Products and innovation
The personal-care line spans hair dryers, curling irons and straighteners, hair trimmers and removal devices, electric toothbrushes, skincare and facial-cleansing devices, and foot-care tools. Beyond beauty, ETA's catalogue runs to nearly 1,000 products across kitchen, home-care and major-appliance categories. Its Storio retro collection — a line styled on mid-century design — gained wider visibility after appearing on the Czech television baking show "Peče celá země," the local version of The Great British Bake Off [5].
Current status
ETA is an active business. Its international e-commerce site operates a full catalogue with localised versions for Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Germany and Slovenia, while the Czech site eta.cz runs alongside a network of around 40 retail locations [5]. The company's reach is regional rather than global, centred on Central and Eastern Europe with German and English export channels. It offers services including extended-warranty programmes, spare-parts servicing and an appliance-recycling scheme for customers.
