Summary

Overview

Extrait d'Atelier is an Italian niche perfume house founded by Chiara Ronzani and based in Zugliano, in the province of Vicenza. Its concept is consistent across the line: each genderless fragrance is dedicated to a master artisan and the trade practised in their workshop, framing scent as a tribute to traditional craftsmanship. The company sums up this idea in its tagline, "Extracts of poetry in drops of perfume." The brand remains active, with a live catalogue and a multi-country stockist list as of mid-2026 [7].

The house dates its own beginnings to 2015, the year it describes as the conception of the brand [7]. Editorial coverage and the fragrance database Fragrantica instead place its start in 2016, the year of its first commercial launch [10][11]. The two dates are not in deep conflict: 2016 marks the public debut, while 2015 reflects when Ronzani began building the project.

Origin and founder

Extrait d'Atelier was created by Chiara Ronzani, who has said she grew up surrounded by Italian ateliers and travelled widely before turning to perfumery. According to the brand, the line was born "from the love of beauty, respect and awe of the values of ancient making, together with passionate research." Ronzani built the house around a single conceit: every perfume tells the story of a skilled craftsperson at work, with each scent named for a different trade — shoemaker (Maître Chausseur), tailor (Maître Couturier), jeweller (Maître Joaillier), gardener (Maître Jardinier) and ceramicist (Maître Céramiste) [10].

History and milestones

The brand made its public debut in 2016 at the Esxence fair in Milan and Pitti Fragranze in Florence, presenting its first three fragrances [7]. That same year it established a partnership with La Fondation des Ateliers d'Art de France, reinforcing the artisanal theme. In 2017 the collection was shown at the Tranoï exhibition in Paris, and Maître Chausseur was named a finalist in the Independent category at the Art and Olfaction Awards in Berlin [7].

The line expanded over the following years: Maître Céramiste launched at Esxence in 2018, and Maître Jardinier followed in 2019, created with the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. The same year, the company opened a showroom in a former 1930s shoe factory and began working with the KaDeWe Group, which placed its fragrances in department stores in Hamburg and Munich [7]. The brand marked its fifth anniversary in 2020 [7].

Products

Extrait d'Atelier produces eau de parfum fragrances, sold in 100 ml and 10 ml sizes, alongside a discovery sample set and a leather perfume case the company describes as handmade in Italy. The catalogue centres on five scents, each tied to a craftsman's trade. The brand worked with several perfumers: editorial and database sources attribute the first three 2016 releases to Claudia Scattolini, Maître Céramiste to Maurizio Cerizza and Luca Maffei, and Maître Jardinier to Bertrand Duchaufour [11].

Maître Jardinier, the line's most widely reviewed scent, is a woody, green and aromatic composition built on citrus, juniper, pine and laurel over a base of cedarwood, incense and fir balsam. Cosmetiqua Magazine called it "a powerful green that has been taken all the way" and "perfume as wearable art," while noting it "needs to be worn intentionally and doesn't work as a default scent" [9]. The fragrance blog Chemist in the Bottle described it as "a well done woody-aromatic-green perfume" [8].

Philosophy and positioning

The house presents itself as an artisanal rather than industrial perfumer, emphasising handcraft, restraint and what it calls "essential elegance without excess." Its fragrances are marketed as genderless; the company states that "sophistication and class have no gender." On its about page, the brand frames the collection as "an atelier of life to be worn," describing perfume as "the alchemy that transforms the art of making into a way of being."

Distribution

The fragrances are sold through the brand's own online shop and a network of specialist retailers across roughly nine countries, concentrated in Europe. Stockists include perfumeries in Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Hungary, the United States and Russia, as well as the Alsterhaus and Oberpollinger department stores in Germany. In Sweden the line is carried by ATP Atelier and Sniph in Stockholm.

Recognition

The brand's most notable distinction is Maître Chausseur's selection as a finalist in the Independent category at the 2017 Art and Olfaction Awards in Berlin [7]. Its fragrances have also been reviewed by niche-fragrance outlets including Cosmetiqua Magazine and Chemist in the Bottle, and the workshop theme has been featured in the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera.

Current status

Extrait d'Atelier is operationally active. Its e-commerce site, full catalogue and international stockist list remained live as of June 2026, and the most recent dated third-party coverage is a 2023 editorial review [9]. No public parent company is recorded; the house appears to remain independent.
