Overview
Eye Care, known in full as Eye Care Cosmetics, is a French make-up and skincare brand developed for sensitive eyes, reactive skin and people who wear contact lenses. It is owned and manufactured by Laboratoires Contapharm, a French laboratory based in Yèbles, in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Paris region [10]. The brand traces its origins to 1981, when two pharmacists, Patrice and Danielle Soyer, set out to create eye make-up that contact-lens wearers could use without irritation [5].
What began as a narrow answer to one problem has since grown into a broad "high-tolerance" range. Alongside mascaras, eyeliners and foundations, the line now covers skincare, nail care, a hair serum and products for people whose skin, nails and lashes have been weakened by cancer treatment. The brand remains active, and in 2026 it was introducing new tinted lip balms.
Origin & founders
According to the company's own history, the idea emerged while Patrice and Danielle Soyer were working together on products for contact-lens care. They noticed that ophthalmologists routinely advised women who wore lenses not to wear make-up, for fear of damaging the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye [5]. Many of these women, the company says, took their glasses off precisely to show their eyes, only to be told that make-up was off limits.
The Soyers combined their backgrounds to tackle the problem directly. Their goal, in the brand's words, was to design cosmetics formulated to avoid any irritation or allergic reaction on contact with the eye and the skin around it. In practice this meant choosing ingredients that do not irritate or trigger allergies, leaving out charged (ionic) substances and ingredients that form a heavy seal on the skin, matching the natural acidity of the eye and skin, limiting the amount of fatty ingredients and, above all, making sure the colour pigments were compatible with the eye.
The work involved a long period of research and testing, carried out with ophthalmologists, allergists and dermatologists. Eye Care Cosmetics emerged from that process. The company describes it as the first "high tolerance" brand designed specifically to combine beauty and safety, a claim made on its own site rather than by an outside body. The history page gives no separate year for the launch of the Eye Care name; 1981 is the year the founders began the project.
Patrice Soyer remains associated with the business: he is named as director of publication in the legal notice of the brand's French website.
History & milestones
The early spread of the brand beyond France is described mainly by its distributors. The Swiss distributor's website states that Eye Care has been recommended by ophthalmologists and opticians in Germany since 1983 [2], which places the brand in the German-speaking market within a few years of its creation.
Over the following decades, the brand widened its focus from the eye to the rest of the body. The company links this shift to a rise in contact intolerances and skin allergies, and to the visible effects of cancer treatments on skin, nails and hair. It now presents three launches as its most significant innovations:
- 2012 — Ultra Vernis Silicium Urée, a nail-polish range of 55 shades designed for nails weakened by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. - 2016 — Infini-Cils, which the brand calls the first mascara and liner designed to support the growth of lashes and brows. - 2021 — Ultracapil, a serum intended to reduce hair loss and support regrowth.
By its own count, the brand now offers more than 350 products aimed at people with intolerances or fragile skin, and it describes itself as a reference brand for tolerance in France, favoured by health professionals [5]. Its homepage says the company has spent "more than 40 years" developing safer, more demanding beauty products.
Ownership
Eye Care belongs to Laboratoires Contapharm, a French simplified joint-stock company (SAS) registered in Melun, with its registered office at Hameau de Vulaines in Yèbles. Contapharm both owns the brand and manufactures its products.
The company runs two other lines under separate names. NATorigin is a skincare range the company describes as at least 98 per cent of natural origin, and Pharmasouples is a multi-purpose solution for soft and silicone-hydrogel contact lenses [4]. The contact-lens line reflects the same background in lens care from which Eye Care itself grew.
In Switzerland, the brand is represented by the distributor Prolens AG of Zürich, which operates a separate German-language website for the brand [1]. The two sites present the brand slightly differently. The brand owner's French site describes its offer as "high-tolerance care and make-up for sensitive skin and eyes", while the Swiss distributor's site uses the heading "Eye Care – sanft zu Ihren Augen" ("gentle to your eyes"). Both refer to the same brand; the French site is the one published by the owner and manufacturer.
Philosophy & positioning
Eye Care positions itself at the meeting point of cosmetics and pharmacy. The company states its mission as reconciling "beauty and safety for everyone, even the most fragile" [9]. It groups its values under four headings: medical and pharmaceutical expertise, high-safety beauty, trust and proximity.
On its philosophy page, the brand says it is guided by confidence in science and by its pharmaceutical and formulation expertise. It reports working with a range of health professionals, including allergists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, oncologists and pharmacists, to understand the needs of its users. The intended audience is broad but specific: people with allergies, intolerances or hypersensitivity to cosmetics, and people whose eyes or skin are fragile for other reasons.
The Swiss distributor frames the brand's purpose in similar terms. Its site notes that many women consider their eyes sensitive and that contact-lens wearers often struggle to find make-up compatible with their lenses. It also highlights a practical detail: the brand does not sell refills, on the grounds that a mascara brush becomes contaminated after a few months and should not be placed into a fresh tube.
Science & innovation
At the centre of the brand's approach is a formulation principle it calls Bio-Inertie® ("bio-inertness"). The company describes it as the founding principle behind all its formulas, intended to respect the biology of the tissues of the eye, skin, nails and hair, even for people who are allergic, reactive or undergoing cancer treatment [7].
In practice, Bio-Inertie is defined largely by what it excludes. According to the brand, its formulas leave out irritants and allergens such as chromium, nickel, cobalt, carmine and essential oils. They also exclude ionic substances that could react with the eye, the skin or the materials of contact lenses, ingredients that might upset the skin's protective barrier and its microbiome, and contested substances such as parabens and endocrine disruptors.
Particle size is a second strand of the brand's thinking. The Swiss distributor's site explains that all Eye Care ingredients and pigments are ultra-micronised, ground to a size measured in thousandths of a millimetre. Large particles, it argues, are coarse and sharp-edged, and can scratch the cornea, collect along the lash line or block the tear ducts; the finer the particles, the rounder their shape and the lower the risk of mechanical irritation.
Testing is a recurring theme in the brand's communication. The company says every product undergoes a systematic evaluation of skin and eye tolerance on a panel of people with sensitive skin and eyes, under dermatological or ophthalmological supervision, and that product efficacy is assessed in clinical tests run by independent laboratories under medical supervision [8]. The Swiss site adds that the products are made in France under the same conditions as medicines, are allergy-tested and clinically tested, and carry a full ingredient declaration on every pack [2].
Products
The range spans eye make-up, complexion products, lip colour, nail polish and skincare. Eye make-up remains the core. The High Tolerance Mascara is described by the Swiss distributor as designed for sensitive or allergy-prone eyes and for contact-lens wearers, and sits alongside volumising, lengthening and waterproof mascaras, liquid and pencil eyeliners, eyeshadows and brow products.
Several products reflect the brand's later move beyond the eye. Infini-Cils combines a mascara with a serum for lash and brow growth. Ultra Vernis Silicium Urée brings nail polish to people whose nails have been damaged by cancer treatment, and Ultracapil addresses hair loss. The skincare side includes cleansers and make-up removers, moisturisers, anti-ageing care and products for redness and blemishes. The Swiss distributor highlights a vitamin E and F combination, together with marine collagen and marine elastin, as key ingredients in the care line.
A dedicated oncology section groups make-up, skincare, nail, lash and hair products for people undergoing cancer treatment, as well as routines built around them. The brand also sells a care kit under the name BOX ROSE® for the same audience.
Sustainability
The brand's stated commitments focus on two areas. The first is support for people with cancer: the company says it aims to stand alongside patients, caregivers and socio-aestheticians — beauty practitioners who work in medical and social care settings — in providing supportive cosmetic care during treatment [8].
The second is local production. The company states that it intends to invest and manufacture mainly in France, following the strict manufacturing rules for European dermo-cosmetics. On its philosophy page it links this to the value it calls proximity, citing its base in the Paris region and local manufacturing. No third-party environmental or ethical certifications are documented for the brand.
Recognition
Coverage of the brand in independent media is limited. A French beauty blog review published in September 2026 described Laboratoires Contapharm as a company that has specialised in high-tolerance cosmetics since the 1980s and judged the brand to be serious about tolerance. The same review noted that some products are less pigmented than users of more intense make-up may expect, which it attributed to the pared-back formulas [11].
Current status
Eye Care is active. In 2026 the brand owner's French website was promoting newly launched high-tolerance tinted lip balms, and the Swiss distributor's site was also being maintained. The brand continues to be owned and manufactured by Laboratoires Contapharm in France.
