Overview
Faith in Nature is a British natural body- and haircare company founded in 1974 by Rivka Rose [1]. Based in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, it makes shampoos, conditioners, body washes, soaps and household products sold direct and through mainstream UK retailers. The company remains an independent family business and is active, with its most recent public appearances in 2024 and 2025.
It is known for two things in particular: a long record of vegan, cruelty-free formulation that predates the mainstream natural-beauty movement, and a 2022 governance experiment in which it gave Nature a seat on its board of directors [8].
Origin and founders
The brand was founded by Rivka Rose, who grew up in New York City. According to the company, she had little access to green spaces as a child and developed an early attachment to the natural world by growing avocado seeds from her local grocery store [5]. That interest later led her to start the company in the United Kingdom, around an idea the brand sums up as harnessing the power of nature without harming it in the process. Faith in Nature describes its working approach with a trademarked phrase, "The Rivka Rose Connecting to Nature Method."
The company says it has made vegan-only products since 1974 [6], a period when, in its own words, natural and cruelty-free products were "not so much a bandwagon as a one man band."
Products and ingredients
The core range covers haircare and personal care: shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, body washes, soaps, hand washes and lotions, alongside household lines such as laundry and washing-up liquid. Shampoos are organised around single hero ingredients and scents, including jojoba, seaweed, lemon and tea tree, lavender and geranium, and coconut.
According to the company, formulas use a minimum of 99% natural-origin ingredients. Retail listings note that the range contains no parabens, SLS or SLES [10]. The brand's packaging-led products are also part of its identity: zero-waste shampoo and conditioner bars sold as plastic-free, 400ml bottles made with recycled plastic since 1999, and large 5-litre and 20-litre refill bottles intended to cut single-use packaging.
Philosophy and positioning
Faith in Nature positions itself as affordable, ethical, natural personal care, with a stated mission to "(re)connect people with the powers of nature by making it accessible to all." The company frames affordability as a principle rather than a tactic, arguing that everyone should have access to nature. Industry and retail sources place it as a value-priced brand aimed at eco-conscious shoppers buying natural products in mainstream supermarkets and health-food retailers [9].
Production is UK-based, outside Manchester, and the company describes itself as the United Kingdom's largest manufacturer of natural products. It says it remains independent, family-run and without external shareholders.
Sustainability and certifications
Sustainability is central to how the brand presents itself. It holds B Corp certification [4] and carries the Leaping Bunny cruelty-free mark, administered by Cruelty Free International, which it received in 2003 as one of the early brands to be approved [7]. Its products also display the Vegan Society's Vegan Trademark. The company says its packaging uses recycled material wherever possible and that its operations are carbon-balanced through a partnership with the World Land Trust. In 2024 it introduced a 500ml range in 100% recycled and infinitely recyclable aluminium.
Nature on the board
In 2022, Faith in Nature said it became the first company in the world to legally appoint Nature to its board of directors [8]. Developed with the legal groups Lawyers for Nature and the Earth Law Center, with pro bono corporate support from Shearman & Sterling LLP, the arrangement gives Nature a voice in decision-making through a proxy director, Brontie Ansell of Lawyers for Nature. Creative director Simeon Rose said the company was "delighted to be the first to do this but we don't want to be the last." The move was covered by PR Newswire and syndicated across beauty and sustainability press.
The exact date has been recorded inconsistently. The official PR Newswire announcement is dated 23 September 2022, and is the basis for the 2022 date used here [8]; some secondary references place the step in 2023.
Recent history
The company launched its first crowdfunding campaign in 2023, raising more than £760,000 toward sustainability improvements [9]. In 2024 it marked 50 years in business. In January 2025 it was invited to the House of Commons by Cruelty Free International to mark the organisation's work and discuss the future of cruelty-free standards, at an event hosted by Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham [7].
Current status
Faith in Nature is active. It is an independent, UK-based manufacturer with documented activity through 2024 and into 2025, including its 50th anniversary, the aluminium packaging launch and its House of Commons appearance [7]. The brand sells across UK mainstream retail and operates country sites for Germany, France and Italy, with distribution in the Nordic markets.
