Summary

Overview

Farmacia SS. Annunziata 1561 is a Florentine apothecary and beauty house that traces its origins to 1561, when Domenico Brunetti opened a spezieria — a spice and medicinal-herb shop — in premises owned by the Benedictine nuns of San Niccolò, near Florence's cathedral [2]. More than four and a half centuries later it still works out of Florence, producing perfumes, home fragrances and cosmetics for the face, body, hair and men's grooming. It counts among the oldest pharmacies and cosmetics makers in the world.

The business has been run since 1970 by the Azzerlini family and operates today as KER S.r.l., the company that holds the trademark and serves as its legal entity. It remains a family enterprise: Elena Azzerlini, daughter of the couple who acquired the pharmacy in 1970, leads it as owner and commercial director and has overseen its recent push into international markets [6]. The house frames itself as a bridge between Florentine artisanal tradition and modern formulation.

Origin & founders

The pharmacy dates its founding to 1561, the year Domenico Brunetti opened an apothecary in a building belonging to the nuns of San Niccolò near Florence's Duomo [2]. The brand's English-language history gives the founder's fuller name as Domenico di Vincenzo di Domenico Brunetti and describes him as a herbalist and chemist. In its earliest form the shop was a spezieria, dealing in spices and medicinal herbs rather than functioning as a modern pharmacy.

From the start the shop made early cosmetics alongside its herbal and medicinal preparations. Among the historic products attributed to it is Crema al Cetriolo, a cucumber cream that, according to the company, was used by the Italian cyclist Gino Bartali. The premises themselves shaped the brand's identity: a ceramic sign depicting the Annunciation, received in the nineteenth century, eventually gave the pharmacy the name it still carries. The historic shop on Via dei Servi remains part of the business today, and the company also styles itself in short form as FSSA1561.

History & milestones

The house documents a long sequence of name changes, ownership shifts and new product lines across its history. In 1876 the business moved from spezieria to pharmacy and received the ceramic sign of the Annunciation that would define its name. The official name became "Farmacia della SS. Annunziata" in 1935. The company says its historic spaces survived the catastrophic 1966 flood of the river Arno, one of the most destructive in Florence's modern history.

The decisive turn came in 1970, when Carlo Azzerlini and Laura Pizzati became owners and the family stewardship that continues today began [2]. Under the family the business expanded beyond its apothecary roots: in 1985 it introduced a modern cosmetics line of roughly 150 products, and in 1991 the laboratory was relocated to KER S.r.l., when it adopted the trademark "Farmacia SS. Annunziata dal 1561 Firenze Italy."

In the twenty-first century the house has marked its anniversaries with new fragrances. For its 450th anniversary in 2011 it created a commemorative scent built around iris as a tribute to Florence. In 2017 it launched a seven-fragrance home collection inspired by the city's medieval guilds. In 2021 it unveiled a renewed brand identity under Elena Azzerlini and released fragrances for its 460th anniversary.

Ownership

The brand operates as KER S.r.l., the legal entity and trademark holder, with a registered headquarters in Florence. KER S.r.l. is the operating company rather than part of a larger beauty group. Ownership has rested with the Azzerlini family since 1970, when Carlo Azzerlini and Laura Pizzati acquired the pharmacy [2]. Their daughter, Elena Azzerlini, is described as owner and commercial director of KER S.r.l. and leads the brand's international expansion [6]. The company presents itself as a multi-generation family business — "the heart of a family tradition that, from generation to generation, has evolved without ever losing its identity," in its own words.

Philosophy & positioning

The house positions itself where Florentine craft tradition meets modern research. According to the company, its products come from "meticulous attention to details, through the use of selected ingredients and application of traditional techniques perfected over the years," blending modern technique with respect for Florentine artisanal tradition. It says its values centre on quality, innovation, artisanal mastery and respect for Florentine heritage, summed up in the phrase "Each creation is a tribute to constant commitment toward quality and innovation."

Its tagline, "Emozioni, ricordi, fragranze" — "Emotions, memories, fragrances" — frames the brand around scent and recollection. In an editorial brand feature, Elena Azzerlini described a design philosophy in which "Every detail must have a reason to exist," with packaging and bottles deliberately echoing historical pharmacy aesthetics and Tuscan artistic heritage [7]. In the same feature she noted a geographic split in how the ranges are received, characterising the Eastern market as "more attracted by cosmetics" while "Europe and Italy are more oriented towards personal fragrances."

Products & innovation

The range spans three main areas: fragrances, home fragrances and cosmetics, with the cosmetics category covering face, body, hair and men's grooming. The home-fragrance lines draw directly on Florentine history, with collections inspired by the city's medieval guilds — the Arti Maggiori and Arti Minori [7].

Among its signature releases, the company identifies Al Rihla, which it describes as the first limited-edition Extrait de Parfum in its history and dates to 2023 [6]. The "Street Art Fragrances" collection comprises four Extrait de Parfum inspired by contemporary urban art — Talisman, Urbex, Daphne and Malenuvole. Its perfumes are organised into olfactory families, from citrus and marine to woody, oriental and gourmand scents, and a separate "Fragranze 1561" line is offered in 100ml and 50ml formats. The brand's history also highlights the early cucumber cream Crema al Cetriolo.

On formulation, the company says it sources quality raw materials from around the world and that its cosmetic experts combine natural ingredients with what it calls innovative techniques to produce "controlled and certified cosmetic formulations," with every formulation undergoing "rigorous testing to guarantee quality, safety, and durability." It states that its products contain no parabens, silicones or GMOs, and that it does not conduct animal testing [3]. No specific hero ingredients or proprietary technologies are named in the available material.

Sustainability

The company describes commitments centred on materials and place of manufacture. In an editorial feature it is reported to have eliminated plastic where possible, switched to glass jars, and relocated all production to Italy to ensure what it calls "complete Made in Italy" [7]. On its own laboratory page the brand says it prefers glass over plastic and uses certified sustainable papers. Florence is given as its manufacturing location.

Recognition & press

On the niche-fragrance database Parfumo, the brand's perfumes carry an average community rating of 7.1 out of 10 across 3,352 ratings [8]. In 2024 the trade-media outlet MilanoHome published a brand-story feature describing Farmacia SS. Annunziata 1561 as a historic Florentine apothecary with more than 460 years of history, producing cosmetics, home fragrances and perfumes under its Farmacia Parfum line [7]. The historic cucumber cream Crema al Cetriolo is associated with the cyclist Gino Bartali, who the company says used it.

Current status

The brand is active. It is family-run and continues to operate two flagship stores in Florence — on Via dei Servi and on Via Porta Rossa — alongside an e-commerce operation that ships internationally, and it works with official resellers in other cities [5]. Recent activity includes the Street Art Fragrances collection and the Al Rihla Extrait de Parfum launched in 2023, followed by participation in the Pitti Fragranze 2025 niche-fragrance trade fair in Florence, where Al Rihla was featured again [4]. The most recent dated post on the company's blog is from June 2024.
