Summary

Overview

Fiberwig is a Japanese mascara line sold under the Dejavu brand, which belongs to Imju Corporation. It is built around a fiber-infused "film" formula that coats each lash in a flexible tube, a technique now widely known as tubing mascara. The Fiberwig Ultra Long Mascara made its debut in Japan in 2004 [5] and remains the line's flagship product.

The line is a sub-brand rather than a standalone company, which is why its early history blends with that of its parent. Dejavu, the brand that houses Fiberwig, was founded in 1987 and released its first mascara in 2001; Fiberwig itself launched three years later, in 2004 [5]. The 2004 date refers specifically to the product line, while 1987 marks the founding of the parent Dejavu brand around which it sits.

Ownership

Every Fiberwig and Dejavu storefront identifies Imju Corporation as the parent company [2]. Imju is a Japanese cosmetics maker whose other lines include the skincare brand Naturie. Some retailer summaries trace the corporate chain one step further, describing Imju as having been launched by Pias Corporation in 1990 [4]; in that account Imju is the direct parent of Fiberwig and Pias the grandparent. The brand's own pages name only Imju.

Products and technology

Fiberwig is sold as an eye-makeup line, centred on the Fiberwig Ultra Long Mascara in shades including black and a softer natural brown. According to the company, the formula uses a "tip-extending film" made of two kinds of extra-thin nylon fibers — one short, one long — that intertwine to form a light film coating over each lash. The brand pairs this with a "Long Styling Brush" intended to draw the fiber solution from root to tip.

The line is marketed on durability and easy removal. The water-based formula is described as repelling sebum, sweat and tears and resisting rubbing, which the brand frames as a defence against "panda eyes." Despite that staying power, it is meant to come off with warm water rather than a dedicated makeup remover. Stated moisturising ingredients include hydrolyzed silk, fruit extract, honey and royal jelly. Fiberwig is positioned as affordable and highly functional, and is made in Japan.

Philosophy and positioning

Fiberwig inherits the wider Dejavu promise of delivering tangible, functional results in eye makeup. The parent brand traces its name to "the nostalgic feeling of seeing your mother's makeup on her dresser as a child," and works from the mantra "This never existed before, but I've always wanted it," with a stated aim of "bringing expectations to life with real, tangible results." Within that framing, Fiberwig carries the tagline "Dramatic Length, 360° Flawless Beauty."

Distribution and reception

Fiberwig reached Western markets in the second half of the 2000s, part of a wider wave of Japanese cosmetics exports. It arrived in the United States through Sephora around 2007, where Essence magazine featured it as a "Miracle Worker," calling it "the darkest, richest black" mascara and listing it at $24 [6]. In the United Kingdom and Europe it was carried by Cult Beauty, which described it as "one of Japan's top-selling mascaras" [7]. It is also sold through Dejavu's Singapore site and numerous Japanese-import retailers, and is distributed in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

The product has been sold under several names as distribution shifted between regions. Early UK and European stock appeared as "d.j.v. MIARAY Fiberwig," while early US listings used "DJV Beautenizer Fiberwig" [7][6]; it is now branded more consistently as Dejavu Fiberwig.

According to the retailer Rei Cosmetics, the mascara ranked among the top three in Japan for 19 years and won more than 23 cosmetics awards, and it describes Fiberwig as "the #1 Japanese tubing mascara brand for the last 19 years" [3]. The line is commonly associated with both J-beauty and the broader rise of tubing mascara.

Current status

Fiberwig is active. The Ultra Long Mascara continues to be sold across Imju and Dejavu's international storefronts, including the brand's Singapore site, Cult Beauty, Japanese retailers and the Nordic market, with no signs of dormancy.
