Summary

Overview

FILA is an Italian-origin fashion and sportswear brand whose name also appears on a line of fragrances and body-care products. The clothing label was founded in Biella, in the foothills of the Italian Alps, by brothers Ettore and Giansevero Fila [8]. Today the brand is owned by Fila Holdings of South Korea, which acquired it in 2007 [6]. The fragrance and body-care range that carries the FILA name is a separate, licensed business: Coswell S.p.A. holds the European fragrances and cosmetics license, while the German perfume house Mäurer & Wirtz has handled exclusive distribution for Germany and Austria since July 2023 [5].

The scent line translates FILA's streetwear and sportswear identity into perfume. Mäurer & Wirtz describes the range as dedicated to "everyone looking to express themselves with trendy streetwear," and the brand remains commercially active, with new releases recorded as recently as 2024.

Origin and founders

The FILA name dates to the early twentieth century in Biella, a textile centre in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Editorial histories place the founding in 1911, when brothers Ettore and Giansevero Fila ran the family wool business making knitwear and underwear for the local market [8]. Wikipedia frames the date slightly differently: it records 1911 as the year the wool mill took the name Fratelli Fila S.p.A., near Biella in Coggiola, and 1923 as the year the company was "officially established" [6]. The fragrance line itself is far younger, launching only in 2022, so the heritage it draws on belongs to the clothing brand rather than the perfume.

For its first decades the company was a textile maker rather than a sports label. Editorial accounts describe a factory focused on carded and combed wool, producing underwear and knitwear. A branch making coloured knitwear, known as MABY, was spun off in 1968, and in 1973 the business was rebranded as Fila Sport under the designer Enrico Frachey, who oversaw an expansion that established offices in France, Germany and the United States.

History and milestones

FILA's turn toward sportswear came in 1973, when it launched its "White Line" tennis collection in bold red, white and navy that broke with the all-white tennis convention of the day, and signed the Swedish player Björn Borg [6]. Borg went on to win five consecutive Wimbledon titles dressed in FILA gear, a partnership widely credited with lifting the brand's profile [8]. The label became associated with distinctive red and blue branding on court and, according to one retailer history, produced one of the first cotton tees made specifically for tennis. Through the 1980s and 1990s it became a fixture of streetwear and hip-hop culture, worn by figures such as Tupac Shakur and LL Cool J, with its oversized logos, tracksuits and the Disruptor sneaker becoming sought-after items of the era. The F-box logo grew into what editorial accounts call a symbol of global youth culture, and the brand established a presence in dozens of countries worldwide.

Ownership shifted several times in the following decades. In January 2007 the brand and its international subsidiaries were acquired by Fila Korea, now Fila Holdings, based in Seoul.

The fragrance chapter is recent. The first FILA scents, F-Power and F-Vibes, appeared in 2022. In July 2023 Mäurer & Wirtz took over exclusive distribution of FILA Fragrances and Body Care in Germany and Austria, supporting the European licensee Coswell S.p.A. [5]. A further line, F-Identity Uomo & Donna, followed in 2024 [1].

Ownership

The FILA clothing brand has been owned since 2007 by Fila Holdings of South Korea; its chairman, Gene Yoon, holds a controlling interest through the group's structure [6]. The fragrance and body-care line operates under license rather than direct ownership. Coswell S.p.A. is responsible for FILA fragrances and cosmetics across Europe, and Mäurer & Wirtz distributes the range in Germany and Austria.

Mäurer & Wirtz is a family-run perfume company based in Stolberg, near Aachen, and a subsidiary of the Dalli Group. It traces its history to an 1845 soap factory and counts brands such as 4711, Tabac and Tosca in its portfolio. The company describes itself in places as a fifth-generation family business and elsewhere as sixth-generation; both descriptions cite more than 180 years of activity [2][3]. As distributor and producer of the FILA scent range, Mäurer & Wirtz is not the parent of the FILA brand, which remains a separate Korean-owned company.

Philosophy and positioning

The fragrance line is built around two contrasting characters. The company presents F-Power as "the perfect FILA Boost for the performance-oriented athletic soul," aimed at a sporty audience, while F-Vibes is described as enveloping "young fashionistas with the cool FILA vibe" [5]. Both sit under a broader positioning the producer sums up as scent for those "who want to express themselves in trendy streetwear." In its announcement of the distribution deal, Mäurer & Wirtz framed FILA as a fashion brand that "now represents Italian lifestyle in the sports, fashion and music industry," and the company's chief executive, Stephan Kemen, said the firm was adding the brand to its portfolio to support the European licensee with its sales experience in the fragrance trade [5].

Products and innovation

The range centres on its named fragrance families: F-Power, pitched at athletic wearers; F-Vibes, aimed at a younger fashion audience; and F-Identity Uomo & Donna, a men's and women's pairing introduced in 2024. The line also extends into body care, the category Mäurer & Wirtz distributes alongside the perfumes.

The products distributed by Mäurer & Wirtz are made in Germany, where the company says the production sites for its entire core range are located. Mäurer & Wirtz also states that it removed animal-derived ingredients from all new products from 2020 onward, making them vegan, and that it manufactures to the ISO 22716 cosmetics standard. These commitments are stated by the producer and apply across its core range rather than being specific to the FILA name.

Sustainability

Mäurer & Wirtz, as the producer of the distributed range, reports several environmental measures. It says it has used electricity from renewable sources since 2022, uses recycled aluminium in deodorant cans and recycled plastics in perfume closures, and sources packaging cardboard from certified European forests. As with the product standards above, these are company-level commitments covering its core range rather than claims tied specifically to FILA.

Current status

FILA is an active brand. The clothing label trades globally, and the fragrance line is current and expanding, with F-Power and F-Vibes launched in 2022, the Mäurer & Wirtz distribution agreement signed in 2023, and F-Identity Uomo & Donna released in 2024 — the most recent visible activity recorded for the scent line [1].
