Overview
Florasis is a Chinese cosmetics brand founded in Hangzhou in 2017 [1], known in its home market under the name Hua Xizi (花西子) [6]. It positions itself as an "Oriental makeup" or C-beauty brand, building its products and packaging around traditional Chinese aesthetics and beauty rituals. The English name is a portmanteau the company explains as a fusion of "Flora" and "Sister," evoking, in its words, "a goddess standing amongst blossoming flowers."
The brand became one of the most visible names in China's domestic beauty boom of the late 2010s, before a 2023 livestream pricing controversy drew sustained national attention. It remains active, expanding internationally into Japan and Europe through 2023 and 2024.
Origin & name
According to the company, Florasis sits at the meeting point of "the wisdom of traditional beauty rituals" and "the philosophy of Chinese aesthetics," with formulas built around what it calls nourishing floral essences that aim to unify makeup and skincare. The brand summarises its mission as "a marriage of science and art," describing its products as "a gift and legacy to inner health, outer beauty, and ancient craftsmanship."
The company is based in Hangzhou, in China's West Lake region [1]. Its founders and corporate parent are not stated on its English-language materials. The name combines the floral and the feminine: "'Flora' and 'Sister' became Florasis," the brand says, a homage it frames as honouring the natural world.
Philosophy & positioning
Florasis describes itself as a champion of C-beauty, treating makeup as a form of cultural storytelling rather than cosmetics alone. Its collections lean heavily on Chinese heritage motifs, among them a "24 Solar Terms" makeup line tied to the traditional seasonal calendar, and the Nomadic Glam range drawing on Inner Mongolian leather-carving traditions. The brand has also worked with custodians of intangible cultural heritage, including artisans in leather carving, silver forging, and embroidery.
The company structures its values around what it calls Six Core Promises: Celebrate Tradition, Always Innovate, Nourish with Nature, Champion the Customer, Strive for Better Service, and Do Good, Do More. Its stated tagline is "Redefine Professional Makeup & Beauty Artwork."
Products & innovation
Florasis spans eye, lip, and face makeup alongside a skincare range and tools. Its signature items include the Floral Engraving Phoenix Makeup Palette and the Blooming Rouge Love Lock Lipstick, products often cited for their ornately engraved or sculpted detailing. On the skincare-adjacent side, the brand points to its Flawless Jade Breathable Setting Powder, built around a proprietary "Active Jade Formula" it credits to its laboratory research into flower-based nourishment.
The company says it operates five research-and-development centres and holds more than 170 patents [1] — figures it reports itself rather than ones independently verified. Other brand-stated technologies include a "Nano-Light Embroidery Tech" used in its embroidery-themed collection.
History & expansion
Founded in 2017, Florasis grew chiefly within China before turning outward in the early 2020s. Japan became its first international market in 2023, reached through Amazon distribution and a pop-up at Isetan Shinjuku in September of that year [6]. In 2024 the brand made its European debut on the beauty floor of the Samaritaine department store in Paris, opening on 1 September through DFS, the selective-retail arm of LVMH, and bringing its Nomadic Glam collection to Europe [6]. The company has said it aims to hold a consistent global pricing strategy across markets.
Controversies
In September 2023, Florasis was at the centre of a widely covered episode involving Li Jiaqi (Austin Li), one of China's most prominent livestream influencers, often nicknamed the "Lipstick King." On 10 September, while promoting a Florasis eyebrow pencil priced at 79 yuan (roughly US$10.80), Li responded to a viewer who found it expensive by suggesting people should ask "why they haven't received a pay rise for many years" and whether they had "worked hard enough" [7]. The comments were read as disparaging lower-income shoppers and triggered a heavy backlash; Li lost around a million Weibo followers, and the affair gave rise to the "Florasis Coin" internet buzzword as a unit for measuring everyday prices [7].
Days later, on 12 September, a shopper drew renewed scrutiny to a Florasis five-piece Jade Makeup Brush set priced at 919 RMB (about US$126) that used synthetic-fibre bristles; coverage drew more than 240 million views within hours [8]. A public survey of over 18,000 respondents found nearly 80% would not buy the set. Florasis issued an official apology on 19 September, which itself drew more than 460 million views [8]. Editorial coverage at the time described Florasis as "the poster child of C-beauty" caught in a reputational setback [8].
Recognition
Business coverage of the 2023 episode noted Florasis's commercial standing in China: it had ranked sixth in sales during Tmall's Double 11 shopping festival in 2022 and tenth in the 618 e-commerce event's presale in 2023 [7].
Current status
Florasis is active. It operates an English-language e-commerce site, publishes seasonal editorial content, and through 2024 continued an international retail expansion spanning Japan and Paris alongside a new skincare line, with further launches such as Tokyo's GinzaSix flagged for that year [6]. Its core market remains China, where it is described as an affordable brand "loved by millions," while its reach is broadening across multiple regions.
