Overview
Francesca Bianchi is an independent niche perfume house founded in 2016 by the Italian perfumer of the same name, who develops and formulates every fragrance herself from a laboratory in Amsterdam [5][6]. Self-taught rather than formally trained, Bianchi began the line after a background in art history and art-book publishing, and the house operates as a single-perfumer studio rather than a conventional brand.
The house's nationality is described differently depending on the source: editorial coverage consistently frames Bianchi as an "Italian perfumer," while her own account places the working base in Amsterdam, the Netherlands [7]. In practice the identity spans both — Italian heritage and craft, Dutch operating base — and the brand's own tagline, "Made in Amsterdam by Italian hands," captures that split. The house remains active, with its journal updated as recently as March 2026 [4].
Origin & founders
According to her personal account, Bianchi's interest in scent dates to childhood. She studied the history of art, with a focus on twentieth-century work, and lived in Florence, Berlin, Luxembourg and Amsterdam while working in art-book publishing. Her path into perfumery began after she read a book on natural perfumery, after which she studied and experimented on her own. She settled in Amsterdam, where she created her perfume line and, in 2016, launched her first three fragrances — producing them by hand in her own laboratory [6].
Philosophy & positioning
Bianchi frames perfumery as artistic expression rather than a marketing-led product. "Perfumery is not simply about scent," she states; "it is a form of artistic expression," describing her work as translating ideas, emotions and states of mind into something invisible yet deeply felt. The house summarises this with the tagline "Perfume as Art." In a brand statement carried by one retailer, the perfume is presented as "a work of art ... not subject to marketing plans or market research, nor to the investors' need to make a profit" [8] — a positioning that follows from the studio's independent, single-creator structure.
On materials, Bianchi rejects a strict natural-versus-synthetic divide, saying there is "no contradiction" between the two and that there are "no 'better' or 'worse' materials — only materials that are more or less suitable" for a given purpose. Each fragrance is said to take from six months to several years to develop.
Products & innovation
The house's range centres on extrait de parfum, alongside sublime oils, candles, limited editions and discovery sets. Its recurring olfactive signature — sometimes called the "Bianchi DNA" — is built on a heavy use of orris, or iris root, which lends a buttery, skin-like powderiness, combined with animalic musks, leather and spices [7]. Editorial coverage characterises the overall effect as "warm, furry, animalic, powdery, oily, smoky," with an animalic quality meant to suggest human skin.
Signature releases include Sex and the Sea, built around ambergris and immortelle; The Dark Side, a spicy oriental blend; Under My Skin, described in one review as "acutely intimate"; and Angel's Dust and Unspoken Musk [5]. By 2025 Bianchi had created roughly 23 perfumes [7].
Ethics & sustainability
The company states that it does not test on animals, noting that EU law has prohibited animal testing for cosmetics entering the market since 2003. It says it has replaced animal-derived castoreum and civet with synthetic musk substitutes, describing them as "wonderful but unethical ingredients," and pledges to disclose clearly if real ambergris is ever used, particularly for vegan customers. On packaging, the brand reports using FSC-certified paper printed with non-toxic inks, having eliminated cellophane, and supplying glass bottles it describes as easily recyclable.
Production is split across countries. Bianchi formulates each composition in Amsterdam; the compositions are then produced in Grasse, France, and matured, filtered, bottled and packaged in Milan, Italy [2]. A retailer spotlight renders the same idea more loosely as "Made in Amsterdam by Italian hands," a creative shorthand rather than a literal production address [5].
Recognition
The house has drawn attention chiefly from perfume critics. Luca Turin rated Angel's Dust four stars, while giving The Dark Side two ("solid construction but largely conventional") [5]. In a July 2021 live interview, the critic Persolaise summed up the recurring themes of her work as "carnality, vision, emotion" and noted that she had "already developed a loyal following" despite the house's relative youth [6]. One niche-fragrance retailer has described Bianchi as having "become a cult icon in the niche community," listing the house among "5 niche perfume houses worth gatekeeping" [7].
Current status
The house remains active. It is an independent, one-perfumer operation that has been running from Amsterdam since 2016, selling internationally through its own site and a network of stockists, with a small team described as some employed and others collaborating as freelancers under Dutch law. Its journal continued to publish into 2026, the most recent post dated March 2026 [4].
