Summary

Overview

Go-Comb is an independent American grooming-accessory brand based in Brooklyn, New York, that makes credit-card-sized combs designed to slot into a wallet. Founded and still run by designer Heather Burkman, the company sells its combs directly online, through Amazon and via wholesale, and says its products are carried in hundreds of stores across the United States and abroad [2]. It remains active, with a live direct-to-consumer store and current product lines.

Origin & founders

According to the company, the idea began at a family dinner. Burkman watched her uncle pull a black plastic barber comb from his wallet, where it sat awkwardly, and asked herself why no one made a comb that fit in a wallet [2]. After failing to find one for sale, she taught herself to prototype at a local hacker space, cutting the first units on a laser cutter, and opened an Etsy shop within a couple of weeks.

Burkman brought a fashion background to the project, which the company credits for designs that follow current pattern and colour trends. Before Go-Comb she studied fashion and marketing at Cornell University and worked at the parent company of Free People and later in marketing at Etsy [2]. She continues to design the combs independently in Brooklyn.

History & milestones

An early turning point was a 2014 Kickstarter campaign titled "go-comb: fit for your wallet," which raised $20,512 from 846 backers against an $8,000 goal [6]. Burkman has said she deliberately avoided seeking major investors, relying on the crowdfunding campaign and reinvested revenue to keep control of the business [5]. The company describes its growth as passing through a successful Kickstarter, several manufacturing processes and a series of trade shows [2].

Products & positioning

Go-Comb's core product is a comb the size of a credit card, made to fit a wallet's card slot rather than to serve as a full-size styling tool. The line has expanded into several variants, including a stainless-steel wallet comb [7], a combined comb and mirror [8], and a comb paired with a bottle opener. Combs are offered in stainless steel, brass and plastic, in fine- and wide-tooth versions and in a range of patterns and colours, with custom options also available.

The brand sums up its positioning with the tagline "Fit For Your Wallet," marketing the combs to people who travel light or are, as the company puts it, "on the go." Go-Comb describes itself as a women-owned business.
