Overview
GSE is an Italian brand of phytotherapy products built around grapefruit seed extract. It is the core house brand of Prodeco Pharma S.r.l., a company based in Castelfranco Veneto in the Veneto region of northern Italy, which says the GSE formulation is the basis of most of its products [4]. The name is the acronym under which grapefruit seed extract is known in the United States.
The range spans food supplements and personal-care items, from respiratory and digestive products to intimate cleansers, skin-cleansing products and oral hygiene. GSE is sold mainly through pharmacies and herbal shops, with Italy as its core market. The brand is active, and its owner publishes its website in Italian, German, English and Spanish.
Origin & founders
No launch year is documented for the GSE brand itself, and its history is bound up with that of its owner. Prodeco Pharma was founded in 1988 in Castelfranco Veneto by the entrepreneur Alberto Catania, according to an Italian news report published after his death [14]. The company dates its own start to the same year, when it began distributing products and training services to pharmacies and erboristerie, the Italian herbal shops [2].
From the beginning, grapefruit seed extract sat at the centre of the business. Prodeco describes the extract as a remedy that should not be sold on its own. Instead, the company combines it with other plant ingredients chosen for a specific action. It calls the result "complete products", each with GSE as the main component in a set dose and aimed at one health problem. This approach has produced a series of product lines, each built around a different complaint.
History & milestones
For its first decades the company grew inside Italy, building what it calls a professional network of pharmacies and herbal shops across the country. Alongside the products, it offered training to the pharmacists and herbalists who sold them.
In 2016, Prodeco Pharma says, it reached the first goals of an international development plan. A German subsidiary, Prodeco Pharma Deutschland GmbH, is registered in Ulm [12], and the owner's website addresses customers in four languages. The German site carries a pharmacy finder for locating points of sale.
On the night of 11 to 12 May 2024, Alberto Catania died suddenly at the age of 63 [14]. Besides running Prodeco Pharma, he had been president of the Montebelluna football club, which he took over in 2019. The company's sustainability page, written in 2026, refers to more than 38 years of values since the 1988 start.
Ownership
GSE is a registered trademark owned exclusively by Prodeco Pharma S.r.l. [3]. The company is a single-member limited company (S.r.l. Unipersonale) registered in Treviso. Its corporate footer states that it is subject to the direction and coordination of OcedorP S.r.l., also a single-member company.
GSE shares its owner with several other Prodeco brands. They include Probiotic+, a line of probiotics for intestinal flora; Biodifer, which addresses iron absorption; and 360°, a line positioned around overall well-being.
Philosophy & positioning
Prodeco Pharma frames its work under the tagline "Phytotherapy for your health". The company says that for more than 30 years it has developed plant-based health solutions that target the underlying causes of complaints. It also pays attention to diet and exercise, an approach it calls "360°". In its own words, each person is a unique and interconnected system, and its care model starts with listening to the individual.
The company lists five guiding principles: responsibility, growth, respect, coherence and transparency. It says these derive from ethics, which it treats as an absolute principle. Its stated aim is to support health rather than to fight illness.
The same holistic framing runs through the GSE brand. According to Prodeco, grapefruit seed extract works best in combination with other natural ingredients that have a specific action, rather than alone. GSE is therefore positioned less as a single-ingredient product and more as the common base of many formulas. Each formula is built for a particular problem.
Prodeco Pharma holds the status of a Società Benefit, the Italian form of benefit corporation [7]. The company says this status commits it to building public-benefit goals into its business model. It also says it integrates environmental, social and governance principles into its strategy and publishes a sustainability report.
Products & innovation
Most of the GSE range consists of food supplements and medical products for areas such as the respiratory system, the gut, the bladder and the eyes. GSE Aerobiotic, for example, is promoted on the owner's homepage for bronchitis, flu, colds and sinus, ear, windpipe and tonsil complaints. Other uses listed on the brand page include candidiasis, vaginal dryness, cystitis, haemorrhoids, intestinal parasites, halitosis, gastric disorders, otitis, conjunctivitis, herpes simplex and head lice. The company says the extract can be delivered in dry and liquid form, and through both water and oil.
The beauty-relevant part of the range is smaller. It centres on intimate care, sold as the GSE Intimo line. The line includes GSE Intimo Daily Balance, GSE Intimo Crema, the deodorant GSE Intimo Deogenic and GSE Intimo Proovuli 4actions. The brand page also lists skin cleansing, acne, dermatitis, skin and nail mycosis and oral hygiene among the uses for GSE-based products.
The hero ingredient across all of these is grapefruit seed extract (Citrus paradisi seed extract). Prodeco says its products are not tested on animals, are suitable for people following a vegan lifestyle and are gluten-free [6]. No certifying body is named for these claims, and no third-party certifications are documented.
Science & innovation
GSE is marketed with strong efficacy claims. The English brand page describes the extract as antifungal, antiviral, parasiticidal, cytoprotective, a repairer of mucous membranes and a broad-spectrum antimicrobial. It says extensive testing at laboratories and universities around the world has proven GSE effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and parasites [4].
The company also cites a study comparing grapefruit seed extract with other antimicrobial substances. The two language versions of its own page give different figures for that comparison. The English page says the extract was 10 to 100 times more effective against the microorganisms examined [4]. The German page says it was between ten and a hundred percent more effective [3]. Neither figure is independently confirmed.
On safety, Prodeco says the extract has a lethal dose above 5,000 mg per kg of body weight. It adds that the extract does not interact with other medications and does not significantly harm beneficial gut flora [4]. The brand page presents GSE as a possible alternative to antibiotics for some bacterial infections. It gives the extract's selectivity as the reason, meaning an ability to tell harmful bacteria from beneficial ones. A bibliography on the page includes articles from US alternative-medicine publications of the 1990s. The page also states that millions of people around the world already use the extract, and says the company hopes globalisation will make it available to everyone.
These claims are the company's own. Independent reference literature on grapefruit seed extract as an ingredient takes a different view. It finds no scientific evidence that the extract has such antimicrobial properties. It also reports that the antimicrobial activity measured in some commercial extracts has been linked to contamination with synthetic preservatives [13]. That literature discusses the ingredient in general and does not name GSE or Prodeco Pharma. The extract is widely sold as a dietary supplement and is also used in cosmetics.
The owner's website includes a reporting form for suspected adverse effects or product defects. Customers can use it to tell the company about problems they believe followed use of one of its products.
Recognition
GSE has received little independent press coverage. The main published account of the company is an Italian news report on Alberto Catania's death in 2024 [14]. It described Prodeco Pharma as the phytotherapy company he founded in 1988. No awards are documented for the brand.
Current status
GSE is an active brand. Its product lines are listed on Prodeco Pharma's live website, which is published in four languages. The owner's sustainability page was updated in 2026. Italy remains the core market, served through pharmacies and herbal shops, while the company's international plan and its German subsidiary extend the brand beyond Italy. Prodeco Pharma runs a separate platform, Prodeco Professional, for pharmacies. The company is active on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube under the Prodeco Pharma name, and no GSE-specific social accounts are known.
