Overview
Guam is an Italian body-care brand specialising in marine, seaweed-based anti-cellulite cosmetics. It was founded in 1986 by Egidio Siena and is owned by the cosmetics company Lacote S.r.l., based in San Prospero, in the province of Modena [3]. The brand built its reputation on a single product, a seaweed mud wrap sold as Fanghi d'Alga Guam, and has since expanded into creams, gels, oils, leggings and a face-care range.
The brand remains active. In May 2026 it marked its 40th anniversary and launched a new body-care line called Intenso Effect, and Italian press reports describe it as present in more than 40 countries [8].
Origin and founders
According to the company's account of its history, the brand began with a trip its founder made to the port of Brest in Brittany, France, in 1986 [4]. There Egidio Siena watched local fishermen harvesting seaweed from the Atlantic, an observation the company credits as the starting point for the product. The harvested seaweed was traditionally dried in coastal fields, losing much of its weight, and then ground into a fine flour the brand calls "fior fiore d'Alga."
Siena enriched this seaweed flour with plant extracts and other natural ingredients to create Fanghi d'Alga Guam, the seaweed mud that became the brand's signature. Grazia's Italian edition, recounting the same origin in 2021, names him as the founder of "Guam-Lacote." A 2011 press release announcing the brand's arrival in the United States gave the same 1986 starting point but did not name the founder.
History and milestones
The company that manufactures the products, Lacote, was created in 1990, after which production moved to a larger scale. Manufacturing has remained in San Prospero, Modena, where, the company says, the original recipe has been kept unchanged for four decades.
To support its product, the company points to clinical testing and survey data. It describes an early trial in which 36 women applied the mud to the thighs and buttocks daily for a month, reporting visible results. Three GFK Eurisko consumer surveys carried out between 2006 and 2013 ranked Fanghi d'Alga Guam first among anti-cellulite products, with 74% of users reporting an effect [4]. The 2011 US press release stated that the mud wrap had been shown in clinical trials to produce an average loss of two centimetres in each treated area [6].
In 2026, the Italian magazine 5 Stars Elite covered the brand's 40th anniversary and the launch of the Intenso Effect line, a set of five body treatments for summer 2026, and noted distribution in over 40 countries.
Ownership
Guam is owned by Lacote S.r.l., an Italian cosmetics company headquartered in San Prospero, Modena [3]. The product brand itself is registered as Fanghi d'Alga Guam. A 2011 press release described Lacote as one of Italy's largest beauty companies and the country's leading maker of anti-cellulite products, used by more than one million European women [6]. No acquisition history is recorded for the brand.
The brand maintains two storefronts. Its official Italian site, guam.it, presents the company headquarters and manufacturing as being in San Prospero, Modena [3][4]. A separate US site, guambeauty.com, describes a distribution centre in Redding, California, and frames itself around shipping to American customers [2]. The Italian location is the brand's manufacturing origin and corporate base; the Californian address serves the US distribution operation set up through the partner Lacote USA.
Philosophy and positioning
The brand positions itself around renewable marine ingredients and environmental sustainability, which it describes as a guiding principle for close to 40 years. Its stated values include sustainable algae harvesting, vegan and animal-derivative-free formulas, FSC-certified cardboard packaging and renewable energy. The Italian site carries the line "Da 40 anni l'efficacia anticellulite scelta da milioni di donne" — 40 years of anti-cellulite effectiveness chosen by millions of women.
The seaweed is gathered with a traditional tool called the scoubidou, which the company says does not cut the part of the plant anchored to the seabed, allowing it to regrow. The algae are dried by sun and ocean wind and then ground and mixed using cold processing, a method the brand says preserves the active properties.
Products and innovation
The brand's core product is Fanghi d'Alga Guam, the seaweed mud wrap, sold in the US market as GUAM Beauty Mud. Around it sits a wider range of anti-cellulite and body-contouring products: creams and gels, draining and de-puffing formulas, slimming and firming creams, scrubs, oils and leggings, alongside a face and skincare line and an Inthenso premium range. The hero ingredient across the line is Atlantic marine algae, supported by actives the brand highlights such as black tourmaline, phytocollagene, astaxanthin, caffeine and menthol.
Guam markets several proprietary technologies, including a "F.I.R." (Far Infrared Rays) system based on black tourmaline, LipoactiveNanospheres, a Bioactivity Complex and an Emana fabric used in its textile products [2]. The company says its formulas are vegan and cruelty-free, stating that it "never tested any products on animals and never will."
The seaweed mud has long been described as a standout. The 2011 US press release said the products' effectiveness had given them "an almost cult-like status among users" [6], and Grazia credited the mud's wider reputation to the three national GFK Eurisko surveys [7].
Sustainability
Sustainability is central to how the brand presents itself. Beyond the scoubidou harvesting method, the company installed a 64 kW solar array on its facility rooftops in 2011 and describes a "GREEN EARTH" project that fits collection boats with solar installations. It states that most primary packaging uses recycled materials and that its products contain over 98% ingredients of natural origin. In April 2022 the company became a GLS Climate Partner, financing forest-protection projects in Brazil and Peru [5].
Current status
Guam is active. The clearest signal is editorial coverage from May 2026 marking the brand's 40th anniversary and the launch of its Intenso Effect body-care line for summer 2026, with the company reported as present in more than 40 countries [8]. Both its Italian site, guam.it, and its US storefront, guambeauty.com, are operational.
