Summary

Overview

Hairburst is a British hair-supplement and haircare brand founded in 2014 [5]. It built its business online and through social media, selling ingestible hair vitamins alongside topical products such as serums, shampoos and masks. The company is registered in England under company number 08898301 [4], and since 2021 it has been majority-owned by the retail group JD Sports Fashion plc [5].

Some retailers list the brand with a "BP" suffix in feed data, but its trading name is simply Hairburst.

Origin & founders

Hairburst was established in 2014 by three co-founders: James Hill, Henry Gwilliam and Matthew Cragg [5][6]. According to trade publication BeautyMatter, the brand was started with a £4,000 investment and grew into a team of 45, reaching roughly 1.5 million followers across social media [5]. One company database records the first founder's name in the informal form "Jimmy Hill" [7], though the two beauty-trade sources covering the company use "James Hill."

From the outset the brand was internet-first, reaching customers directly through its own e-commerce site before expanding into third-party retail. Co-founder Hill has described the business as having the ability to create products and market them through social media.

Ownership

In 2021, JD Sports Fashion plc acquired a majority stake in Hairburst — the retailer's first move into the beauty sector [5][6]. The terms and size of the stake were not disclosed [6]. Reports place the deal in late 2021: BeautyMatter dates the acquisition to 27 September 2021 in one summary and to October 2021 in its article body, while TheIndustry.beauty notes the investment had occurred by September 2021 [5][6].

JD Sports said it had been impressed by a management team with a strong connection to millennial and Gen Z consumers [5]. The brand has continued to operate under the Hairburst name following the acquisition.

Philosophy & positioning

Hairburst frames hair health as a whole-body matter rather than a surface concern. On its science page, the company says it targets internal imbalances and identifies several root causes of hair problems — among them stress, inflammation, hormones, ageing, lifestyle, nutrition and metabolism — which it aims to address through a combination of supplements and topical care. Its tagline is "Healthy Hair On Repeat."

The brand positions its products broadly: it describes Hairburst as suitable "for everyone who wants healthier, stronger, longer hair," and for anyone aged 16 and up.

Products & innovation

The range spans two main areas. The first is ingestible hair vitamins, including the Advanced+ Hair Formula, Chewable Hair Vitamins, and variants aimed at specific groups such as pregnancy, vegan and over-35 customers. The second is topical haircare — the Multi-Active Hair Growth Serum, Long & Healthy Hair Mask, Scalp Tonic, plus shampoos and conditioners.

The company markets two proprietary blends: Folishield, which it describes as a protective blend formulated to balance hormones, reduce stress and support sleep, and Trichoburst, described as a growth-supporting blend intended to nourish follicles and improve nutrient delivery. Named ingredients include KSM-66 Ashwagandha, which the brand says helps lower cortisol, along with MSM, astaxanthin, reishi mushroom, turmeric with black pepper, and a balanced level of biotin.

Hairburst makes a number of efficacy claims. It advertises "guaranteed results in 90 days" and cites a 90-day study of the Advanced+ Hair Formula reporting improvements in fullness, strength and thickness. The company also states that 98% of users noticed faster hair growth and 86% said their hair felt fuller after 90 days. At the same time, its FAQ qualifies the scope of these products, noting they "can't regrow hair that's no longer growing" but are intended to improve the health and strength of existing hair. The company says all of its cosmetic products are certified vegan and cruelty-free, and that its vitamins are manufactured at facilities in the UK, with additional production in Europe, the United States and Australia.

Current status

Hairburst remains an active, trading brand and was operating localized e-commerce sites across the UK, EU, US and Australia at the time of writing. It has been majority-owned by JD Sports since 2021 but continues to trade independently under its own name [5].
