Overview
Hanae Mori is a fragrance brand named after the Japanese couturière Hanae Mori (1926–2022), whose Tokyo design house grew into one of the few Asian-led names in Paris haute couture. The label has two reasonable starting points: Mori opened her first atelier, Hiyoshiya, in Tokyo in 1951, while the perfume line that carries her name today launched in 1995 [7]. Whether one dates the brand to the couture house or to the fragrance line depends on which entity is meant.
The perfume business is active. It is run from Paris by Cosmétique et Parfum International, whose official site is operated by C.I.L Services SARL [4], and its scents are sold internationally through several retail channels. The original Japanese fashion house followed a different path: it restructured and left apparel in 2002, and Mori gave her final couture show in 2004.
Origin & founders
Hanae Mori was born in Muikaichi, Shimane, in Japan, and studied Japanese literature before turning to design. Her early work was a small Tokyo atelier that made costumes for Japanese New Wave cinema, reportedly for around a hundred films. From that base she built a couture house on an East-meets-West idea, pairing Japanese delicacy with Western tailoring. The butterfly became her personal emblem, and the press nicknamed her "Madame Butterfly" [8].
History & milestones
Mori presented her first collection in New York in 1965 under the theme "East Meets West." In 1977 she became the first Japanese and first Asian designer admitted to the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris [8]. The perfume line arrived in 1995 [7], and it was at this point that the house introduced a recyclable, plastic-free glass cap shaped after folded butterfly wings, made with the glassmaker Pochet.
The fashion company's fortunes turned in 2002, when it applied to the Tokyo District Court for protection from creditors and sold its ready-to-wear and licensed apparel operations to an investment group formed by Mitsui & Co. and the Rothschild group [7]. Mori closed her couture career in 2004. She died in Tokyo in 2022 at the age of 96 [7], and the company's material notes that Tokyo marks the centenary of her birth in 2026.
Ownership
The fragrance line today is a licensed business separate from the former fashion house. According to the site's legal notice, C.I.L Services SARL operates the official Parfums Hanae Mori Paris website on behalf of Cosmétique et Parfum International, both registered at 35 Quai de la Tournelle in Paris [4]. In North America the fragrances are marketed and distributed by International Cosmetics and Perfumes (ICP). The 2002 sale of the apparel operations to the Mitsui and Rothschild group [7] concerned the clothing business rather than the perfumes.
Philosophy & positioning
The company frames the brand as a meeting of Japanese and Western sensibilities — what it describes as "a subtle balance between tradition and modernity, restraint and sensuality." The butterfly runs through the identity as more than decoration; in the brand's telling it stands for metamorphosis, energy and independence. The line's tagline is "Make your scent signature."
Products & innovation
Fragrance is the brand's sole category, split into women's and men's collections. Its best-known scent is Butterfly, sold as both an Eau de Parfum and an Eau de Toilette, alongside HM, Magical Moon and the men's HIM. The company also promotes what it calls a Conscious Index, which it says measures the environmental and societal impact of its perfumes from raw-material sourcing through to the fragrance concentrate.
Sustainability
The brand's stated commitments centre on reducing the ecological footprint of its perfumes. Its longest-running claim is the recyclable glass cap introduced in 1995, developed with Pochet to eliminate plastic. Beyond packaging and the Conscious Index, Hanae Mori says it supports organisations working to protect butterflies, tying the conservation effort to the emblem that defines the brand. No third-party environmental certifications are documented.
Recognition
Mori received several national honours over her career: Japan's Purple Ribbon Medal of Honor in 1988 and Order of Culture in 1996, and France's Legion of Honour as Chevalier in 1989 and Officier in 2002 [7]. Her standing extended to a notable clientele; her obituary in W Magazine lists Empress Masako of Japan, for whose 1993 wedding she designed, along with Princess Grace of Monaco, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton [8]. The same obituary notes that her fragrances "remain fragrance shelf staples to this day," and it recalls a 1980 New York Times line that likened her standing in women's clothing to Toyota in cars and Sony in tape recorders [8].
Current status
The fragrance brand is active. Its official store carries current seasonal campaigns and anniversary content marking thirty years of Butterfly, and it continues to publish seasonal editorial posts [6]. While the founder has died and the original fashion house was wound down years earlier, the licensed perfume line remains the living part of the name.
